What Is Your Definition Of Science Fiction?

Robert A. Heinlein, author and critic:

Science fiction is "realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method" (quoted by Knight in Bishop, Nebula Awards 25, 3).

Theodore Sturgeon, author:

"'A good science-fiction story is a story about human beings, with a human problem, and a human solution, which would not have happened at all without its science content'" (as quoted in "Atheling, More Issues", 12).

George Hay:

"Science fiction is what you find on the shelves in the library marked science fiction."

  1. Heinlein's quote about science fiction most aligns with my view of it as at root science fiction tells human stories with human themes.

  3. The quotation, “realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method,” aligns most with my definition of science fiction. I chose this quote because I commonly think of science fiction as fiction that involves science and this quote mentions the nature and significance of the scientific method. I think that science fiction is usually realistic speculation about the future and not too far out of the box thinking. I also agree that science fiction is based on what might happen and what could have happened long ago. There are examples in the Avengers movies about realistic events in the future like the Iron man suit being created with the proper technology, which could possibly happen in the future.

  4. Theodore Sturgeon's quote aligns with my definition of science fiction the most because our imaginations truly are what makes us human and different from other creatures. We poses this incredible ability and science fiction is an extremely good way to use it and to bring out our unique aspects that make us human.

  5. There are so many different definitions of science fiction, and it would be impossible for everyone to ever agree on just one definition of the genre. We all have seen different movies, read different ideas, and then further interpreted them in different ways. However, after reading through multiple definitions of science fiction, I believe that Robert A. Heinlein has a definition that matches my outlook on this genre in the best way. He said, Science fiction is "realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method" (quoted by Knight in Bishop, Nebula Awards 25, 3). This view of science fiction encompasses everything that I see as science fiction too. To me, science fiction has a method. It is a way of looking at our past, seeing how far we’ve come, and then imagining how far we can go. It is a balance of pushing the limits of creativity within the mind and knowing where humanity might hit a peak. Or considering if we will ever hit a peak? Or maybe we have and that's the problem our characters push through. Science fiction is a way of looking at the world, taking in the reality, and working on that. There is one truth. In science fiction each character does not have their own truth. It is one reality. The way that Heinlein put this way of thinking into one quotation really connects with the way I view science fiction as well.

  6. The combination of science and fiction. Limiting boundaries are removed and they seem to be unrealistic but realistic at the same time. Because it has science in it, it has to be something that can be seen, touched, or felt (unlike fantasy where humans are doing things outside of physical realm, such as magic.)

  7. Science fiction is the future and past based on advancing technology. When reading science fiction it transports you into a new world full of time travel, space, new planets, aliens, robots. Some stories you may hear will sound amazing, when other sound scary, they may just sound scary because it seems like they are close to happening. Unlike many other genres of writing science fiction, has a lot less rules, and limits except for imagination.
