After reading
Denver Ordinance Article and
Denver Ordinance 300, did you think of any Science
Fiction short story or class connections? If you can incorporate
quotations, reflect, challenge, or discern with keen insight, please do
so in your blog response due today.
This bill to pass an alien greeting party reminds me of the story puppet show. In this encounter with aliens the extraterrestrials contacted humans on their terms. I believe that if another sentient race exist they should be greeted with respect not the gifts and adoration of some fringe group of society. A bill like this seems unreal and a waste of money because their is no evidence as of yet suggesting we would ever use this piece of legislation.
ReplyDeletei could not think of any direct conections to any of the sotries we have read r movies we have seen, however i think that people are either paranoid or completly crazy about the possibility of there being other life. it to me would be a large waste of taxpayers money and time to fund such a program and to even put it on the ballot was to me a waste of time.
ReplyDeleteThis has a lot to do with our class, kind of. While this has to do with our xenophobia unit, it is also a fictional idea trying to make itself in the real world.
ReplyDeleteI personally do not think that the UFO base would not be a decent way to spend the money, seeing as if it did happen, it would happen extremely rarely. I think this story related to the story about Icky (I don't remember the exact name) because we tend to disregard other life and do not wish it here on this planet.
ReplyDeleteThis idea sounds like a waste of money. What would even be done with the money? help set up greeting parties for extra terrestrials? we aren't even sure that aliens exist that are able to reach earth, so why would we spend money on their extremely unlikely arrival? Reminds me of puppet show where the officials bring the alien coffee.
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of the story puppet show because when the huge alien came down from space the military created it and treated it with respect got it a water but in real life i do not think we should but funding into gifting things for "things " in outer space we have better ways of spending our money.
ReplyDeleteI think that this would ultimately play into a part of "the fear of the unknown" more so than fear of creator and creation. The ordinance most likely failed because in reality its a silly thing to waste public money on. This would have been a much better fit in our xenophobia unit more so than the frankenstein complex unit
ReplyDeleteI didn't really think of any short stories while reading these articles. But I thought it was amazing that our level of fear and anxiety over aliens had grown to the point that we thought we needed to take money from people and from other areas to support this. It made me wonder how many votes it would get now verses how many it got 5 years ago as people are always changing. The most surprising portion for me was the fact that so many people voted yes on the bill.
ReplyDeleteI thought of the first story we read in the xenophobia unit, Puppet Show. The city in the story seemed unprepared to talk to aliens, yet calm until things starrted getting stranger with each 'puppet' falling.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the article, I thought of puppet show, specifically because it was the only story that involved an actual alien and the government reacting to it. I think that have UFO committee wouldn't hurt us to have but I also think that we don't really need it.
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing these statistics on whether or not there should be a UFO base/welcoming site. It made me think about if this is a legitimate thing that can occur. I thought of the x-files when I saw this as some sort of Denver xenophobia for the unknown. At the same time I also saw some sort of science fiction involved due to the fact that aliens are not dis proven, but they are also not proven. Leading back to the X-files I saw this as a potential thing to cause awareness among a community that could cause speculation among one another, which is what occurred in Maples wood.
ReplyDeleteI think that the stories in class and the reading have “the fear of the unknown” in common. They are wanting to prepare if any supernatural aliens decide to land in Denver. It does remind me of the story Puppet, because everyone is calm about it yet worried that it could end up going all wrong.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the articles it reminded me of "The Puppet Show" where other terrestrial life will meet us and tell us all about their life. Then it would show their life styles compare to us. I would be interesting to find something but my hope are low.
ReplyDeleteI personally didn't get reminded of any of the short stories, personally because of the fact that no stories seemed to fit and the fact that this is real life instead of just a made up tale. My viewpoints of this idea as a whole are entirely negative, as there is no point in using tax money for something that might or might not happen.
ReplyDeleteReading about the proposed ordinance to raise public funds for a UFO base and to greet any coming extraterrestrials reminded me of the short story that we read a little while ago, "Puppet Show". Based on this stories viewpoint, it would indeed be a good idea to greet other life forms that were to come to earth, as it is a fairly ignorant assumption to assume that all other life forms would not be like this, and would rather come with malicious intent. I found it interesting, though not surprising really, how much the "no" option in the survey outnumbered the "yes". For now and for a while yet, it will continue to be a possibility that the mass majority is uncomfortable with.
ReplyDeleteThese articles remind me of the story "Puppet show." A city tries to figure out how to deal with extra terrestrial beings. Obviously the story differs in that the city is trying to figure out what to do while the alien is already there, whereas these articles show that people are preemptively planning for alien visitors.
ReplyDeleteit reminded me of puppet show when the military treated the alien with respect and gave him water however spending our money on funding for greeting alien beings that dont exist is stupid we could spend our money on something more useful
ReplyDeleteI feel like this connects with The Silk and The Song in a way because obviously humans and foreign beings would need to make contact first in order for the events of The Silk and The Song to take place, however I think the committee would be aiming to make sure that those events do not take place.
ReplyDeleteThis Ordinance certainly reminds me of our xenophobia unit, however we didn't read any stories in which the people had prepared for aliens arriving. In Puppet Show, the people seem to all receive the alien well, but they don't have facilities for the aliens. Jeff Peckman is against building a UFO base in Denver. Peckman believes that the government shouldn't be building a base. One of his funniest quotes is: "Up until now, it was just: Let's send John Elway out to meet 'em."
ReplyDeleteIn the article it says that if man kind set up an organization for understanding and finding aliens, then the humans would need to be able to understand drop everything they believe in once they know aliens exist. Dropping religion is very hard to do. This is shown in the Planet of the Apes where the ape leaders know that the humans were superior in the past, but they keep teaching the younger generations that humans are like rats to keep their religion from being questioned by the sciences. The government is doing what the apes did in the movie to keep the population of superior beings on Earth from being afraid or changing what they believe in.
ReplyDeleteI think that this has to do with our class but more on the topic of xenophobia and fearing the unknown. I think it just digs deeper into the fact that us as humans will always have an unspoken fear of the other things out there.
ReplyDeleteThese both connect life to the unknown, much like everything we've learned in this unit. This has to do with the basic concept of xenophobia as opposed to specifics in our class. They talk about how to handle fear of the unknown.
