The "Frankenstein Complex" In Our World?
How did the articles that you read in Popular Science, Scientific American, Discover Magazine, NASA impact your thinking about the
technology humans create? Did the articles make you reconsider The Frankenstein Complex?
Please quote and cite your article(s) as you incorporate them within

ReplyDeleteOne article I read was how the religious see robots. http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/lovesick-cyborg/2014/12/01/religious-see-robots/#.VQmbgY73-iw
ReplyDeleteThis article talks about how human creations are not godly they do not possess the same spark that god was able to instill in humans and other life forms and their for they should not be included in religion if sentient. Very progressive church leaders such as Pope Francis support this claim believing that ai robots are not a part of god's creation deliberately because they are man made. These same leaders have made statements about how aliens could be included into the folds of religion because they are made by god as a part of his original creation. This article made me consider if it is possible to make a robot even close to humanity will they mirror us or be extremely different.

ReplyDeleteThe USA today article that I chose to read was called "Frankenstein complex' stalls robot acceptance". In this article, they talk about how despite the fact that we have the technology for robots, we are too afraid of them to accept them. And a lot of our fear comes from the pop culture films and books that have been released. The article also said that a lot of people's fear comes from lack of knowledge of science aspects and an excess of knowledge in pop culture stuff that really is just made up fiction. ReplyDeleteThe article I liked the most was an article about the marines and how they are using a robot for the Mars mission that didn't pan out to scope out near threats on land and in water. It is a tire shaped object with two cameras that let it see two directions at the same time. The machine goes 6 mph on land and 3 mph in water.

The articles I read got rid of the little amount of worry I had for robots turning on the human race with artificial intelligence. This would be the Frankenstein Complex, and it is extremely unlikely to apply to robotics in the real world. The real fear is that we may create robots with killing capabilities that are not intelligent enough, which could cause deaths in which the Frankenstein Complex can apply, as one can still fear what they create even if what they create is not advanced and superior, http://www.popsci.com/looming-threat-artificial-unintelligence
ReplyDeleteThe articles made me realize how far our technology has come. It also seems as though people are making sure that people remain in control. I read an article about driver-less cars. "Still, there are good reasons these vehicles should always have a person behind the wheel, just in case." It seems as though people are handling their inventions responsibly.
ReplyDeleteThe articles I read was "ROBOTS MAY REPLACE ONE-FOURTH OF U.S. COMBAT SOLDIERS BY 2030, SAYS GENERAL" Which impact me because humans have the power to make any robot to replace anyone. In the article robots were built for war. It had a machine gun and 4 grenade launcher and multiple lasers and camera for viewing and look at the surrounding. It reconsidered The Frankenstein Complex because there's a chance than human builds a robot that we end up fearing. Like a police robot that malfunctions or a war bot turning against you.

I think that after reading some articles i definitely think that the Frankenstein complex is a real thing in society. With all this new technology coming out there has to be a chance that some type of creation could turn out different that expected and end up do more bad than good in society. In the article http://www.popsci.com/does-film-chappie-illustrate-future-artificial-intelligence it says "toddler or tyrant" and it just shows with all of this technology that the robot or A.I. could turn out not that smart still and have flaws or turn into something more that the people would be able to handle.
ReplyDeleteOne of the articles that I found interest in was on glasses that can block cameras from facial recognition (http://www.popsci.com/concept-glasses-stop-cameras-recognizing-your-face). They work by using "infared LED's that are invisible to the human eye, but interfere with cameras' ability to see your face." It makes me think of the Frankenstein complex in the way that the reason it is being created is to contradict other technologies out there. This creation itself is nothing to fear, however it shows that as a society many people do fear the advancements that we have already made.
ReplyDeleteIn the article I read (http://www.popsci.com/8-surprises-we-might-find-ceres), I was able to see that the planet in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter named Ceres is being explored only about 200 years after it was discovered. The satellite named Dawn is orbiting Ceres from March 6, 2015 for an entire year. They expect to find possible life forms, some type of atmosphere and also some type of water or ice form that they hope samples are able to be taken. It changes the future of mankind for the rest of life. This is showing scientists new knowledge of how and why things happen and it also brings up the idea that the one planet that is inhabited today may be one out of a million inhabited planets within the next million centuries. Science fiction is truly unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteI read the article, “Pancake Printer Prints Pretty Pancakes,” and I thought it would be a cool invention except it is completely useless. There really is no need for this other than someones own enjoyment in making cute little pancakes. People create unnecessary things that will not truly help us. People either create things out of their own scientific curiosity (like the Frankenstein Complex), or they contribute their robotic and technology ability to help the world in some way. Don’t get me wrong, I think the pancake idea is so cute and fun, but it isn't a cool robot that we could all look to that will contribute and help us in the future.
ReplyDeleteOne of the articles that stuck out to me was one in Popular Science titled "Could Robot Aliens Be Real?". This article touches on the topic of a more advanced life form that has already managed to create completely sufficient artificial lifeforms. With the way things have advanced, this concept may not actually be too far fetched. The author seems to think along the same lines. Article: http://www.popsci.com/popsci-staff/article/2008-08/could-robot-aliens-exist
ReplyDeleteIn the article about artificial intelligence as it relates to the movie Chappie, researchers say that at least at this point, AI as sophisticated as Chappie is pretty far fetched. They discuss how AI that we are starting to develop now, operates in a different way than human intelligence, in a way that makes it harder to reason than humans. It is still shocking to see though, that we are working our way towards a "Chappie", and it exciting and terrifying to think about what could come in the future.
ReplyDeleteThe Article I read was about the movie "Chappie" and the AI that was portrayed in the film. They go on to talk about how the idea of a self learning AI is possible, not plausable but indeed possible. They also state that the writers and AI experts that worked on the film had only one problem and that was creating a self aware and environmentally aware AI. an AI that can organically grow without guidence, they also state that an AI such as that could be dangerous yet extremely useful in a combat or warlike scenerio. http://www.popsci.com/does-film-chappie-illustrate-future-artificial-intelligence
ReplyDeletein the articles i read from popluar scince, i found that the technology humans are creating today is seeming more and more selfish and personall as opppsed to open to everyone. when computers were invented they were create for everyone to use. anyone could get one. now it seems that it is to far out of reach for the comon man and that it is geared twords he powerfull or wealthy. however there are also good things to. we are slowley saving our planet as well.
ReplyDeleteThe articles I read shows that a robot takeover is purely fictional. Most technology is being created to assist humans and it will take years before people will be able to talk to a robot. With computers, there will also be people fighting against them and slowing it down. It will be a very challenging to advance to a level that people can have a Frankenstein complex with."Over at The Kernel, Greg Stevens highlights how robots are using artificial intelligence to to pick up on verbal cues to empathize better with humans, or perhaps match them with a customer service representative best suited to their personality type." (ROBOTS ARE ALREADY FIGURING OUT YOUR PERSONALITY, Popsi, Colin Lecher) Assistance will be met with resistance.
ReplyDeleteWhile looking through articles, I found a headline about a robotic deer. The article I found had very little information, so when I went to find more, I learned more information about how it works. Essentially, it's a huge deer that can be robotically controlled by police which are nearby. One deer in Georgia had to be replaced after it was shot over a thousand times. One of the funniest parts to me is that one man shot the deer five or six times with a rifle and couldn't figure out why it wasn't going down. I think this is interesting because the deer can't really do anything smart enough to communicate or even move over distance, yet it is still doing quite a bit to help the police.

These didn't change my opinion in the slightest, I tend not to worry about anything, ever. So, fearing a creation is a bit of a foreign concept to me, because i would never waste the time to make something and by no means would I fear it if i did.

ReplyDeleteI dint fear anything that mankind has created in fact these articles didn't really change anything about how I think about fearing what we create It just shows that if we are to create anything it shouldn't be something that we will come to fear at all it should be something that we don't fear and that we don't think will hurt us.
