Frankenstein Complex or "Us In The Machine?"

What does Wesch's short video about "us in the machine" make you think? How might this video connect with The Frankenstein Complex stories to date? Explain and use one quotation from a short story to connect. Reflect, dissect, challenge, etc... Please complete this prompt in class or by 2:30p.m. today, March 30th.

  1. I think that this is completely true because of the fact that we create the machine and know what it is capable of and what it is meant for but the people that do all the coding and programming understand exactly what is for and does. The consumers don't understand that much which is why they do not build these electronics which makes us less aware of what technology is actually capable of now a days.

  2. In this video, we get an idea of just how much the world of technology is changing our world. We see a world of tech that is growing more advanced. But in our search for advancement, are we in danger of removing the "human factor"? In the last portion of the video, it's telling us that because of this tech we will rethink government, ethics, love and many other ideas that up until this moment we all had our own ideas of. But, once you remove the human factor, everything gets thrown in the air. Now, any on idea that we can imagine, can be redefined.

  3. The video states that we as people are constantly striving to reach the next technological advancement. This constant want for the next innovative technology is in a way affecting us and we may not even realize it. By pushing and pushing technological boundries the "machine" is always growing, always gaining new information. and by that the "machine" is always gonna be advancing just as we want it too.

  4. This video makes me wonder if most people know what they are creating when they use the internet, or if the even know how the internet works at all. Everything anyone does gets connected back to everything else, and everyone who uses to it contributes to it. Its like we are all helping create an intelligent machine, that knows vastly more than any one human - it is the culmination of knowledge of everyone in the world.

  5. the short film made me think that we as a socioty are advancing in the ways of technology and all things internet. however i dont know or think that it is all necisarly good. we are losing the human conncestion as well as the inate human feature of the do it yourself. instead of doing work to find things out we can just look it up quickley.

  6. The video connects to the idea of The Frankenstein Complex by implying how we are afraid of the internet, which we created. "the machine is us"

  7. This video was about the frankenstein complex because it showed how the internet has affected people. Relating to stories that we have red like epicac the computer monitors us and can figure out complex equations like advertising faster than a human can. The video stated that the internet is not well organized creating opportunity for plagiarism, theft, identity theft, and other crimes that can occur on the internet. Identity is rethought on the internet creating a different medium for people to write on and explore.

  8. At the end of the video that we watched, it was typing things such as "rethink privacy", "rethink governance", or "rethink family". None of these things really correlate to one another, but it shows that this technology is changing everything, and because it is now part of our society, we need to rethink everything, because nothing is going to be the same with the use of these machines here. This relates to the Frankenstein complex because it shows how big of a difference computers can make, and that can be incredibly scary, when one thing holds that much power. In "The Human Factor" the narrator worries "to what extent his artistic skills were being impaired by disuse", which connects to the video that we watched on computers as computers often think for us, and in turn could impair our skills through disuse.

  9. After watching "Us in the Machine" I noticed that humans actually controlled the web a lot less than I had originally thought. The internet is mostly controlling and changing itself just like the monster in Frankenstein, even though the human was the creator. The part of the short video that made me think was how the computer took the typed messages and turned them into images and colors, as if it is thinking on its own.

  10. Wesch's video made me thought of how powerful humans are. We are able to create things that are in was Superior than us. The video connects with the Frankenstein complex by there might be a chance that the Ai or robot may rebel against us. A Connection in "The Human Factor" is technology takes over you. "It removes the human factor"

  12. The video "us in the machine" makes me think heavily about how we are involved in the internet. Just a few decades ago, the world wide web didn't exist. Now, it is known by practically if not everyone and used in everyday lives of many. The thing is, many of us have become part of and one with the machine. We made the internet, and everyone who has ever made a single contribution is part of it. A quote from EPICAC "Asking him to ghost-write the words that would give me the woman he loved..." represents how blindly we depend and use machines to do our work, and become a part of us. This all ties in with The Frankenstein Complex because many things we compile and put on the internet can hurt us, and we can't leave it behind because people have changed and the internet has become a tool of both creation and destruction.

  13. Wesch's short video, "us in the machine" makes me think about how connected we are. We created advancements that find a way to be more advanced and practical than we are. It's weird to think about how we could create something smarter than us that could some day destroy us. This same sort of theme is shown in a lot of films and stories about The Frankenstein Complex such as in the story "EPICAC"."...I'm going to short circuit myself out of your life forever..." This shows how an object created by a human can become so intelligent that it can develop emotions without that being the creators initial intent. Things we make have the possibility to advance without our help meaning that they might be able to become more advanced than us.

  14. The video made me think about how humanity interacts with our creations, and in this case the internet. This video connects with the stories in that our creation causes us to rethink ourselves. An example from "The Human Factor," "Doctor Alpha became possessed by the implications of that belch. If he could not perform, he might at least compose."

  15. We create new technology everyday. We strive to get the best newest stuff. The newest iPhone or computer, but we never seem to see how creepy stuff is getting. Memorizing your fingerprints to know you. Essentially your phone now of days knows you better then most people.

  16. The videos message was to make us think about our computers and technology in general, and how it could be learning because of us. This connects to the Frankenstein Complex because it is something that humans have created and how we are afraid of it. Some people think that it will take over us in the future, and corrupt our society. People immediately blame the creators or the people that cause it. Just like in the story EPICAC when the narrator thinks to himself, “...perfectly logical, inevitable, and all my fault” (322).

  17. The video was creating when people were starting to feel that technology could not always be good. Remember when you had polio? No, because technology advanced to help you. The Frankenstein complex is rare because who goes "Oh, calculators, what a mistake."? If something is wrong or flawed, it's not popular. It's on a very small scale. People insist there's no human factor anymore but there were programmers working night and day to prevent the Y2k scare everyone was talking about in the 2000's. The video relates to the texts in the way that humans change the way technology is made and performs, which is completely true. If there is an error, it is an error is programming and the blame is shifted on the technology itself. "...EPICAC didn't work out the way he was supposed to."

  18. We create the internet based on us. Just like when people say you are what you eat the internet works the same way. It consumes our information and makes its self based on that info.Companies use the internet to give us correct advertisement based on the searches and things we say on the internet. There has been a whole new market born on the internet and that would be the sale of information and destruction of privacy. The internet is used to maximize profits in capitalist society. Anything on your computer or phone or tablet is open to be entered. "I won't go into details about how EPICAC worked."

  19. The short video made by Wesch comments on how the internet is changing society. Judging by his stance on technology, I would assume that he is one of the older generations. Many of the people older than us think similarly to this video. Wesch, using the internet to get his point across types: "The machine is using us..the machine is us." This is a typical angle to look at when considering modern technology, however a different angle with the Frankenstein complex. People rarely think the monster Dr. Frankenstein created as being him.

  20. I think the video wesch made was to show that we should be more aware of how much we depend on technology and how much we use it because if were not careful technology well replace us "the human factor" just like in the story 'The Human Factor" where the machine replaced the organist.

  23. I think that the video showed how us as humans sometimes think that just because we create something means that we are in complete control and that is not always true. With technology there are always variables that the human can control and i think until there is a time that every variable has been tthought out then there will always be room for the technology to in a way run itself rather than a human

  24. It is fun to think of the internet as this pulsing brain that knows all, however; it isn't and it will never be able to act on it's own for lack of a physical body and the need for programming for it to act. Tech does not have personality yet, I doesn't "learn" it just contains the information. The difference between you having a taco and you having eaten the taco.

  25. I think that it is quite amazing how humans have come so far in what they create that they have influenced things like the internet. however the internet and things that know allot of information will never be able to act on themselves to harm humans they need physical features that humans and living organisms have. Technology will never have a conscious of its own and will never have a personality worth considering life.
