What Is Your Definition Of Science Fiction?

Robert A. Heinlein, author and critic:

Science fiction is "realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method" (quoted by Knight in Bishop, Nebula Awards 25, 3).

Theodore Sturgeon, author:

"'A good science-fiction story is a story about human beings, with a human problem, and a human solution, which would not have happened at all without its science content'" (as quoted in "Atheling, More Issues", 12).

George Hay:

"Science fiction is what you find on the shelves in the library marked science fiction."

  1. Science fiction is a story that is possible, but not very plausible. It leaves questions up to the reader. While leaving interesting futuristic questions, it also connects to some kind of scientific topic; such as space, time travel, etc...

  2. Science fiction is the genre of literature and film where stories include ideas of what new technology will be, ideas of what will be discovered in the unknown, and our fears of our actions' consequences. Common themes include space travel, time travel, different species of intelligent life, slightly morbid science experiments, and futuristic technology. The viewer or reader is often challenged with far-reaching questions about what they think is to come and how it will affect humanity.

  5. Science Fiction to me means the concept of the undiscovered, unexplored, and a premonition of things that could come to be.

  6. Science Fiction is a genre that uses humanity's problems and fantasies that could become true. Often times technology and the advancement of it are explored what kinds or problems they can cause. Often times space and the future will be included in this genre.

  7. "Science Fiction has always been the kind of first level alert to think about things to come. It's easier for an audience to take warnings from sci-fi without feeling like we're preaching to them" - Steven Spielberg.
Science fiction to me is a way of warning us of things to come and ideas of solutions or how things may play out. It's a way to help us imagine the possibilities of our future and to guide future generations down what we believe to be the right path

  8. For me, science fiction is best defined by the first quote, "realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method"-Robert A Heinlein. It's a bit hard to describe science fiction as a whole, seeing as there are so many subgenres, but I like to think of it as reflecting upon the past of our species in order to predict either the future or an alternate present. The two constants of science fiction seem to be that it revolves around humanity, and that it speculates about the future. It typically helps the reader put things in perspective and think about the effects today's decisions and discoveries will have on the future.

  9. Science fiction is a very unique genre. It's a form of literature and media based around the idea of major technological, social and/or environmental advancements or changes. Sci-Fi is humanity's way of imagining possibilities of the future. It's a mix of facts and fantasy. Of what we already know and what is yet to be discovered or what we wish we knew. Tales of utopian societies and otherworldly wonders are captivating as they reveal the seemingly endless possibilities of what awaits mankind.

  10. Science fiction to me is a genre that has to do with the future. I think that it normally has something to do with the future and technology in the future. It is something that will appeal to those who like to see either a utopian society or a dystopian society.

  11. Science fiction is a genre that often explores either how the world might become in the future of technology or how it could be (or could've been) if scientific laws were different or humanity followed a different path in developing technology. It uses existing or possible scientific laws to explore humanity and/or the world around us.

  12. Science fiction to me is something that is believable but not yet real. If you were to write something about the future about how we would have robots taking over all human jobs, its believable. We have already started to make robots and having them take over human jobs would let the company's make more money because they would not need to pay the workers. This is a believable concept because of the way we are advancing in society yet it is not real and might not ever be because it sound ridiculous.

  13. To me science fiction is any story that includes events and concepts not yet reachable by mankind but that also includes problems, issues and ideas relevant to mankind at the time of it being written. It is because of this that science fiction to me can also be used as a great mouthpiece to project issues facing mankind.

  14. The quote by Theodore Sturgeon is mainly what I think of when I think of science fiction. It's generally about humans who have gotten into a certain situation because of a new technology they've decided to use. I think the show Black Mirror is a very good example of the types of science fiction this describes, but there are also certain science fiction books and movies that have aliens and different creatures. The aliens wouldn't have been because of new human technology.-Logan lewis

  15. My definition for science fiction is by Robert A. Heinlein. I believe that science fiction portrays the future in multiple ways. it is always cool to see the near future in science fiction like holographic computers and other near future technology.

  16. Science fiction to me are stories told predicting or giving insight to a future we do not know. By using knowledge we have now authors or producers use this information to give their insight into the future, it can be 15 years from now or it could be 1000 years from now in a made up galaxy.

  17. I think that science fiction is a prediction of the future. You will see most sci fi sotries or films be the same. The reason for this is becuase they all have the extrapolation we are studying now, usually they have most of the same tech, areas, and people. The Steam Man story we read to begin with had a lot of things that are showing up now. The sci fi we have is where we want to go.

  18. Robert A. Heinlein's quote relates to what I think of science fiction. When he says that people have to research and know proper science so that the stories are more realistic of what the future could be. The author also states that science fiction has an understanding of nature and respects the laws of nature. I think it's very important to understand how these roles play to make a better story.

Knight's definition makes the most sense seeing as science fiction, within my own definition, is a narrative speculation of potential futures based off of the technology and social conditions of our present

  21. Science Fiction is a modern day concept extrapolated to a point that it seems to be from the distant future, but is based partially in reality.
