Alien Song Lyrics And Xenophobia?
Do the songs and Alien Song Lyrics connect with the concept of xenophobia? If
so, how? Also, feel free to comment regarding other connections with
science fiction. Please include some references to songs and song lyrics
in your response. Please finish this blog response during class.

I think these lyrics can relate to xenophobia because they are talking about outsiders. For example mr spaceman and rocketman and spaceman are examples of outsiders and space.

It's just science fiction related

Sure there is mention of outsiders and different creatures, and what not, but nothing of being scared of them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think that all of the song lyrics do relate to xenophobia because they talk about there feelings about people from outside of our familiar world. An example lyric to this is when in Spaceman by The Killers the lyrics are

It left a strange impression in my head.
This is talking about his bad experience with this alien from another planet.
The songs and the lyrics both connect to the concept of xenophobia for a few different ways. The first reason is that I don't know all of the songs so then it is new to me and unknown and a different sound. Another reason is that the lyrics in some of them relate to unknown. For example, in They're not here, they're not coming says "From the Arizona desert To the Salisbury Plain" it is saying that there isn't anything unknown in places that there have been discoveries of unknown species.
ReplyDeleteMost of the songs treat space travel as a journey to a hostile and inhospitable environment. Rocketman refers to mars as a hellish place. Spaceman implies the unknown is something we want to run from. These songs don't illustrate the alien environments as cultures that are foreign like the other media we have consumed, but it illustrates the unknown as a nebulous hostile void.
ReplyDeleteA lot of the song implicate that the "spacemen" have a negative intent. Many of them also present aliens as much more advanced than us. I think many times we have a very confined idea of what an alien can be. In The Year 2525 the inward idea of xenophobia where we should be fearful of what we may become with hyper-advanced technology.
ReplyDeleteThe song lyrics relate to xenophobia because in a lot of them they're talking about going somewhere else and they're not sure about the new place, or its saying that nobody else will come here to Earth, and I think that's because they refuse to believe in another species, probably because the singers are scared of the aliens.
ReplyDeleteThe songs have a common theme of the song writer either being sent to space and describing their adventure, being visited by aliens, or visiting aliens on their world. The common description being small grey creatures with big eyes. as described in They're Not Here, They're Not Coming by Don Henley.

ReplyDeleteAll of these songs relate to xenophobia in one way or another. The song Rocket Man shows how his life wouldn't work, and the fears he has of this. In the song Mr. Spaceman it says, "Must be those strangers that come every night". This shows how they feel about the aliens that come at night. In Starman it says, "There's a starman waiting in the sky He'd like to come and meet us
ReplyDeleteBut he thinks he'd blow our minds" and this shows how the aliens know that we would be scared of them if they came down. I think that all of these songs shows xenophobia in one way or another.
Music about Aliens is mostly about the stereotypical green space abductors. They mostly talk about the abduction as an escape from modern life. They talk about how they are higher beings with a focus on science without morals. Their view of aliens come from a fear from things hidden in their everyday life
ReplyDeleteSome of the song lyrics relate to the theme of xenophobia they reference different kinds of living, for example in SpaceMan he says his toothpaste tastes weird and he goes on talking about all these things are weird but that could just be how they are in the certain area of the world.
ReplyDeleteThese songs connect to xenophobia because some of the songs sing about not knowing about the creatures or what is out in space. For example, the song Spaceman talks about something ripping him from his bed or leaving a strange feeling in his head. It also connects to how people don't really believe in it but if it was a thing it could scary for people.
ReplyDeleteA lot of these songs predict the future and some dystopian elements that the future unfortunately might have. Some of the dystopian elements are xenophobia, like “But now that I am a spaceman - Nobody cares about me,” in Spaceman by Harry Nilsson. And They're Not Here, They're Not Coming by Don Henley has elements of a dystopian world, “Well, it's a cold, cold, cold, cold, cold, cold, cold, cold - Post-postmodern world.” Spaceman by The Killers also represents a form of xenophobia, Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed - And then they took my blood type - It left a strange impression in my head.”
ReplyDeleteIn the song rocket man there is a couple examples of xenophobia such as the line "I'm not the man they think I am at home" I like to think of that line as a story in itself, John lands on a planet with life forms that are able to communicate and they think of him as supreme but deep down he knows he's not the best, and the other life form doesn't even know
ReplyDeleteThe Alien Songs Lyrics focus on space, which is a common theme in science fiction. In addition, many of the songs suggest loneliness or that one has been rejected. One prime example of this is in the song "Spaceman". One particular song lyric, "But now that I am a spaceman Nobody cares about me", emphasizes xenophobia. Now that he is different, or a space man, no one cares about him.
ReplyDeleteThe Alien Song Lyrics connect with the concept of xenophobia because they describe life that is different from what we consider as normal. In songs such as "Mr. Spaceman" and "Zombies Ate My Neighbors", other creatures are described in a curious or fearful. The Spaceman is rejected and the zombies are considered dangerous and scary.
ReplyDeleteThe lyrics of the songs we listened to vary in how xenophobic they are. In "Mr.Spacemen" the singer wishes the alien could take him along with him. In "Spaceman", though, he claims he was "ripped" from his bed and that the aliens kidnapped him. No matter what type of attitude the songs had toward aliens, there was always an "us vs. them" style of writing.
ReplyDeleteThe lyrics in most of these songs are directed towards things that are unknown. Rocket man provides a perfect example of what was happening in the time period that the music was made. No one was really sure what was out there and most were afraid. This is a perfect example of people thinking of bad and good ideas of what is truly out where we don't know.
ReplyDeleteI think that the way these connect to xenophobia because they talk about space in a way that makes it out to be a cold and lonely place but I don't think it directly connects to aliens. Most of the songs don't make aliens out o be bad or scary just the idea of outer space itself. They are very science fiction but they might not exactly be xenophobic.

ReplyDelete-An unfit environment for human life/unable to enjoy their visits:
“Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids
In fact it’s cold as hell
And there’s no one there to raise them if you did
And all this science I don’t understand”
Xenophobia is seen through how prior to arriving, the concept of “space” has been thought to be amazing and life changing because they don’t know much about this “foreign” location but once they are up in space the astronauts discover it’s the opposite of what they had dreamed of and want to go home.
-And that aliens are superior to humans:
“Woke up this mornin', I was feeling quite weird
Had flies in my beer, my tooth paste was smeared
Over my window, they'd written my name
Said: ‘So long, we'll see you again’.

This quote can be portrayed as Xenophobia because fear is being shown from an unknown life existence.
Both of these connect to xenophobia because they relate to space and talk about them. The way they talk about space makes it seem like it is an empty and lonely place for anyone be. Just because it is in space does not mean that it is related to aliens. The lyrics and everything said is not talking about aliens and the difference in them and humans, so in that sense it is not related to xenophobia.

This song is significant because this was the top song on the billboard hot 100 charts for the week of the moon landing. This shows that as humans we are always looking to the horizon to see what tomorrow will look like especially during times of great scientific discovery.
