Alien Song Lyrics And Xenophobia?
Do the songs and Alien Song Lyrics connect with the concept of xenophobia? If
so, how? Also, feel free to comment regarding other connections with
science fiction. Please include some references to songs and song lyrics
in your response. Please finish this blog response during class.

ReplyDeleteThe songs don't really connect with the concept of xenophobia as much as they connect with just the desire to know the unknown. Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown, of not understanding something that is new to you. The song lyrics include a lot of hope to travel into the unknown as the singer pleads in "Hey Mr. Spaceman" as he begs "...won't you please take me along/I won't do anything wrong/Hey Mr. Spaceman, won't you please take me along/For a ride. The songs are more about wanting to join the unknown rather than anything else.
ReplyDeleteYes, the songs connect with xenophobia because they are all about aliens, but a lot of them are not talking about the fear of them. In Mr. Spaceman he is talking about going with the spaceman, and begging him to take him. Others like Zombies Ate My Neighbors talk about the fear of the unknown, which in my opinion is more xenophobic.
ReplyDeleteThese song I feel do connect with the concept of xenophobia heavily. A common theme of these songs is the artists singing about wanting to go back to normal. For example in the song Rocket Man the artists sing, "I miss the earth so much I miss my wife. It's lonely out in space" . This expresses his desire to return to how things were normally. This represents xenophobia because its fear of something different. These songs really bring up and show how people are afraid of what they don't know because I bet no one of these artists have ever actually been to where they are singing about, yet they are still saying for sure it's bad. This really shows our fear towards what we don't know or our xenophobia.

I believe this because most of the songs talk like these aliens are part of someone's imagination and are not real. In one of the songs it says "'Everybody look down It’s all in your mind'". That means that everyone doesn't believe they are real. If aliens did come to earth, these artists would be more scared than fascinated.
ReplyDeleteI think that the songs do relate to xenophobia because they talk about space people, and things coming from outer space. Most of them as well have a title and lyrics that relate to space, so they relate to outer space. Like Spaceman by the Killers talks about being abducted by aliens.
ReplyDeleteThe songs and xenophobia connect because in the lyrics the artists demonstrate how they dont like the unknown of space. This is head in the song ¨Rocket man¨ in the lyrics ¨Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids

In the songs there is a lot of talk about aliens. just like rocket man, which is one that I have heard. In Rocket man it says "Mars ain’t the kind of place to raise your kids In fact it’s cold as hell". This shows that he does not like space and living in space like mars, he would rather be with humans on Earth.

"It was a light comin' down from the sky I don't know who or why" he doesn't know who they are or why they're there.
ReplyDeleteThey sing a lot about aliens and abduction, and not knowing what's going to happen, and fear. They talk about wanting to get away from the aliens and wanting to stay on earth, so yes.

ReplyDeleteIn the song the people tend to sing about fear and hatred towards the aliens which is completely xenophobia. It is a subject that not much is known about, so for these people to react in the way that they do is showing an unnatural fear or even a simmering undermined hatred of the aliens and unknown things that they are singing out.

ReplyDeleteWe see similarities in the songs and the xenaphobia defanision. We as humans see aliens as extremely sophisticated creatures when in reality the only smart ones are those who have the technology to venture to earth.

ReplyDeleteMany songs given as an example by Mr. Trotter were songs of exploration and wonder, describing man's wish to explore the great unknown and learn all they can about the world around them. But, the lyrics to "They're Not Here, They're Not Coming" have a slight hint of fear of this great unknown, and while it is slight and possibly even a stretch, this ties into the concept of xenophobia, which is the fear of the unknown and foreign things to a certain people or culture.
ReplyDeleteMany of these songs make us think differently about our situation as humans. We think very specifically on how life should be and these kinds of ideas presented in these songs make us think differently about our beliefs. It brings out the tiny bit of xenophobia in all of us.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinions only a couple songs go along with Xenophobia. What they do all have in common is experiencing something "new". Xenophobia is the fear of new things, organisms, or experiences. While in the majority of the songs they experience new things but aren't particularly afraid of them. Those who are, show it through descriptive words like blood, grab your guns, or expressing the feeling of being scared.
