  4. Xenophobia is the fear of what is different from what one is used to. In science fiction, this is often depicted by Aliens, Monsters, or unexplained events. "Nod at me" guessing is a large part of Xenophobia, because when you're scared of something that's different, you try to understand it. Therefore, you guess.

  5. My definition of "xenophobia" is the fear or hatred of outsiders because of the wish that everything they know stays the same. My card, "Don't Look At My Face!", served to make most conversations insanely awkward and almost painful when no one was willing to look at me. It made me stick by my definition, but it was still somewhat of a strange experience to try and convey the topic of xenophobia.

  6. To me, xenophobia is a hatred or fear for outsiders or people who are different. Emotions can be fear and skepticism. "Every time I speak, start dancing."Most people didn't start dancing, they just laughed awkwardly.

  7. My definition of xenophobia is that it is the fear of the unknown. The card activity made me rethink my definition in that it really just means judging someone before you know them. I think that the emotions connected with xenophobia are hate and fear, particularly in science fiction. In science fiction, the humans always hate and fear the aliens because they believe that they're going to hurt them. That quick judgement causes the humans to interpret the aliens as acting or speaking differently than they actually are. For instance, my card was "Take everything I say as a personal insult" which definitely would apply to the situation. If an alien was attempting to be polite but the humans fear them, the humans channel that fear into anger and therefore take everything done or said by the alien as an insult or reason to attack.

  8. The definition of xenophobia is the irrational fear of foreigners. The card game showed me that people act differently around other people if they have a certain trait.

  9. My definition is the fear of things that are different. The card activity was weird, because people don't usually just nod at everything that I say, so it was different. I felt awkward because people would just nod and not say anything back to me.

  10. The definition of xenophobia is fear of someone who doesent act similarly to you or what you are used too. The card activity hightened different personality traits people have and how we can alienate people depending on how they act differently. Being forgotten or left out can connect with science fiction in how we see people wanting to be noticed and the exstrent they will do so, and how people who are different like aliens or robots can be exiled. I had " Interrupt me", so a sense of not feeling heard or listened too.

  11. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of foreigners. Compared to science fiction xenophobia is to aliens, when we think of humans we think about terrible creatures that want to kill all humans. We don't typicality think of aliens as our friends. My initial toughs about the card was that it was weird because everyone was acting different. My card was "Argue with me", so people would argue with me even if it was something that people count argue about.

  12. My definition of xenophobia is someone who is scared of change. I had the card "Ignore me" and I was a bit confused because some people would ignore me and some wouldn't. I felt kind of isolated and insecure because all people knew what card I was holding except me.

  13. The definition of xenophobia is the fear of people from other countries. Ignore me made me think about the definition because when you're scared of something you kinda ignore it.In science fiction people are scared of things from other planets and they try and ignore them.

  14. My definition of xenophobia is having a fear of unknown things. This could classify as going to a new school or country, or even finding aliens. Emotions that connect with this term is sadness or any negative emotion. It isn't fun to be in a situation that you aren't familiar with. The quote on my card was "argue with me", immediately people started laughing and saying it was perfect for me. It annoyed me more than scared me to not know what was on my head.

  15. My definition of Xenophobia is the fear of something alien or different to oneself. In the card exercise the card I had was laugh at everything I say, and this activity did make me think about xenophobia but in a different way than is to be expected. This game was kind of foreign and alien to all of us so intern we did not participate as actively as we would have if it would have been a more comfortable known game. This whole idea of xenophobia makes me connect to the emotion of sympathy more than anything else. This is because it makes me think of things that are outcast because they are different. In science fiction a lot of times the themes play heavily on the idea of isolation because of not understanding. Xenophobia in that respect is really all around us and I feel that might be what science fiction is trying to comment on when it speaks on the subject of xenophobia.

  16. Xenophobia is an intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries. The main emotion in Xenophobia is fear of the unknown. My card was "Agree with me and then disagree with me in the same sentence" I was honestly just confused more than offended. This exercise was a good way to demonstrate what it was like to get shunned or discriminated because most people in this class room haven't had that experience.

  17. My definition of xenophobia is an intense or irrational fear of something. The card activity made me realize that people are judged really quickly, but it also made me feel kind of bad for the people who are feared. My card said "Accept my ideas".

  18. My definition of xenophobia is when a person or group of people is scared of another being from somewhere else. I think that the card activity helped with the definition because what your card said made people act differently towards you.I think some emotions I can connect with it are maybe sad, unwanted, things like that maybe even rude. My card said "Interrupt me!" My reaction to this was very confused before I saw my card because I would react to some ones card, and then someone else would stop speaking or I would be told to be quite, so when that happened it confused me on what my card said.

  19. My definition of xenophobia is fear of something that is not known or unfamiliar. The card activity made me think of my definition because I felt like I had the opposite of a xenophobic person talking to me. I had "nod at me". The emotions that you can connect with science fiction is fear, and curiosity.

  20. xenophobia in my opinion is things like alien and promethus.

  21. My definition of xenophobia is quite simply the fear of aliens. The card activity is helpful to understand how aliens may feel, like outsiders who may be hated just because they're outsiders. My card said "Argue With Me!" Xenophobia could easily be connected with hatred and misunderstanding, as people who are xenophobic do hate or misunderstand outsiders or aliens. "Argue With Me!"

  22. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of people that are different from you. In our day and age there is a lot of pressure to try to fit in and maybe conform to social norms. When people don't care or try to fit into these social norms people are surprised and dont really know how to react to it and can sometimes act poorly. Some people are just actually afraid of change and things that differ from their ideas of what things should be like. The activity kind of made me think about how I treat people that are different from me. Is it mean and deliberate or is there no different reaction. As the activity went on I started to think about how would I react if I had this card or if this was my situation. I can kind of assign a few emotions to xenophobia like fear, hatred, and others like it. My card read Laugh at what I say. This felt weird because it was such a subtle thing that I couldn't really tell what was going on.

  23. My card said, “laugh at what I say.” This had me kind of confused for a minute, when people started fake chuckling every time I said something. But it got me to start thinking of my definition of Xenophobia (that being, “the extreme (and possibly unwarranted) distrust of people from other places”) I started thinking about this because people might show their distaste for an outsider by laughing at them.

  24. Xenophobia is the fear of foreigners and my card was "Don't look at my face!" which is ironic cause generally if you fear something you feel hesitant to look at it.

  25. Xenophobia is the fear of unknown or cultures we don't understand like aliens are a good example because they are unknown and we don't understand them.

  26. MY card said to ignore me. I couldnt tell why people were very quiet towards me and i thought peopel just didnt like me. This connects to xenophobia due to the fact that the definition is the fear of the unknown or others and most likely people were being xenephobic towards me.

  27. Xenophobia is the fear of something which is foreign or strange. My card read "Every time I speak, start dancing." Most people I talked to didn't dance so I had no idea what it was. It was nerve racking not knowing what it said and very tempting to look at. Since xenophobia is the fear of foreign or strange, that's kind of what this activity was like, everyone had to treat you in a certain way.
