Frankenstein Complex Or "Us In the Machine?"
What does Wesch's short video about "us in the machine" make you think? How might this video connect with The Frankenstein Complex
stories to date? Explain and use one quotation from a short story to
connect. Reflect, dissect, challenge, etc... Please complete this prompt

While this my become a reality, the web is just a source of information Yes, we create links but can we really teach something that knows has compiled everything known to man? I don't thin so. AI's will become reality within our lifetime. We can't even imagen where technology will be when we have retired.
ReplyDeleteThe video makes me think about how prevalent the technology of the modern age is beginning to be. This idea connects to the Frankenstein Complex because it is showing how something created by man, The Web, is starting to take over our lives and make us dependent on it. Sooner or later the "human factor" could get written out altogether.
ReplyDeleteThis video made me think about how private all our information is. I had no idea that everything I've ever looked up on the internet has been archived and that there might be someone who knows exactly who I am and everything about me. This relates to “Fear-of-something-created-by-man” because eventually we will resent technology.
ReplyDeleteI think that sometimes we have to be cautious of what we look up because if there are a bunch of people who are just looking up something that isn't very smart that would be good for the machine to learn, then the machine would be dumbed down because it would be watching the actions of all those making bad choices.
ReplyDeleteSome of the lines in the video scared me. When they said "the machines are using us," it made me feel out of control. The video made it sound like machines had their own thoughts and their own minds. I do not believe this to be true but I'm sure some people do. People are trying to make robots a part of everyday life. They are trying to make them like humans and that is more scary to me. Once we create them, there's no going back to ignorance. We will be scared of what we create and once we do, we can't take it back.
ReplyDeleteThis connected with me, because I believe that people are becoming more and more open to technology and really want to always be surrounded by technology. This also shows how people are becoming closer because of technology and the internet, which is great. But, then there is less privacy and more people know about your life. This reminds me of the short story EPICAC, when the machine starts doing what humans can do but better. "Or with his controls set right, he could figure out supply problems for an amphibious landing of a Marine division. He did, in fact." (pg 318)
ReplyDeleteHe was adamant about showing how we as the operators were actually the machine. We are the ones that make the machine do what it does. This is interesting to think about because I know that people today couldn't do anything with this technology in their life. Some people can't even go 30 minutes without being on their phone which I think is crazy. This shows how maybe we have actually become the machine and now that got a taste of what it feels like it will never go away
ReplyDelete"Us In the Machine" makes me think because it talked about how the computer has learned from people making blogs and visiting webpages, which I never knew. This video connects to EPICAC because the super computer learned how to write poetry from the narrator typing in commands and definitions. "I told him about love and girl... That got us onto the subject of poetry, which I defined for him."
ReplyDeleteMy first thoughts in regards to "Us In The Machine" are that technology is likely to continue to expand at an exponential rate, and likely at a rate that we will not be able to control at some point. This has a direct connection to the Frankenstein Complex, as many of us fear where it is tech, and specfically the internet will take us.
ReplyDeleteThis video makes me think that the web could be better if we change the way we think. This connects with the concept because it makes us realize that we could be the ones destroying this beautiful creation after we have had years of building it up. This relates to the story "The Human Factor" because at the end,Doctor Alpha destroyed the organ: "Doctor Alpha advanced to the altar, trailing the shredded card from his hand". Should we be cautious of what we do to technology that could revolutionize the world in a good way?
ReplyDeleteWhat the video made me think about was how involved we are with the internet and how much we influence it. While watching the video, it made me kind of scared. My reaction feelings for the video relate to the Frankenstein complex because us humans, created the internet. It is like the concept that the creator is fearful of his own work. "They feared me because I looked like them." A quote from Eyebem and if the humans create something too similar to themselves, but think differently, it is the most hypocritical thought.
ReplyDeleteWhat he was talking about in the video to me was that the computer is based off us, What we do with it is us and how we connect with others. But It starts to replace things that start to become outsourced. Like being personal in conversations or pictures. High math calculations need 10 people working for a day to solve. What a computer has allowed us to do is outsource our mind for better parts. This reminds me of Human factor that the organ lost the human factor. With us were losing the human factor when we stop using the computer and the internet just for things like math or science but for thought. With the hive mind that is the internet people start to get influenced especially in this day and age where is gone past influence it is now power.
ReplyDeleteThe short video makes me think about how much humans have accomplished in such a short period of time. Our advanced technology is allowing us to the unthinkable, and is slowly but surely getting out of hand. This connects with the Frankenstein Complex because it explains why we should be afraid of our creation. The internet and technological world is beginning to invade privacy and surpass human thinking. Something that Wesch mentioned in the short video was that "the machine is using us". In Human Factor, Dr. Alpha explains how "in the old days he had played the organ, now this new organ was playing him". It shows how new technology is competing with humanity and seems to be taunting us with its complexity and so-called power.
ReplyDeleteI think the video was trying o spread a message to the viewers, and I think the message is that humans should not always trust technology. Any machine that is created by man has an off switch, so we shouldn't fear machines turning against us.

ReplyDeleteThe video about “us in the machine” makes me think about how powerful the internet really is. In a sense, it is scary because computers and all other devices are using us for their own knowledge and, until you watch this video, you don’t think that artificial intelligence is using us. In a sense it sounded like EPICAC because the human who is talking to the machine teaches him about love and about this girl he really loves then the robot falls for the woman he loves. But EPICAC used a human to learn what love is and what a girl is etc. If you look at the original Frankenstein monster he used humans to learn how to speak and learned other things from them. Us as humans teach machines how to think by each idea we put down and each thing we look up.
ReplyDeleteUs in the Machine was spreading a message about how we shouldn't just rely on computers, and machines to do everything for us. It gives us a sense about how machines impose on our lives, like internet, how all these websites, and apps, affects how we live. It influences behavior, emotions, and our daily lives. Computers nowadays can learn about you, like some websites will guess what age, gender, or how old you are. Just like EPICAC can learn about you. Also, the Frankenstein monster learns how to act more human from humans.
ReplyDeleteThis video shows the dependence that humans have on the internet. But at the same time is that really such a bad thing. It allows us access to so much information that generations past would've never had the capability to do.
