"Ordinances And E.T.?"

After reading Denver Ordinance Article and Denver Ordinance 300, did you think of any Science Fiction short story or class connections? If you can incorporate quotations, reflect, challenge, or discern with keen insight, please do so in your blog response due Friday, April 1st.

  1. After reading these articles, I thought of the story we read in class, Puppet Show. This came to mind because in the story, extraterrestrial beings came down to Earth. Also, I thought of the short story with the little girl asking for candy because in that story, the aliens judged the entire community poorly because they didn't like the girl they were testing. The Denver Ordinance might have come in handy for the town that was destroyed by these aliens.

  2. I thought of the short story The Puppet Show and the movie “Planet of The Apes”. It reminded me of the puppet show because of the fact that there was a real alien that came down to Earth. Although the alien didn’t hurt the characters, he did confuse them. It also reminded me of “Planet of the Apes” because you have the apes treating the humans badly as if they were aliens and were scared of them. That kinda reminded me of how we would be scared if aliens came down to Earth. I think that these articles relate to the story more than to the movie. They didn’t harm the alien in the story and now that people have voted in real life, we won’t be having an issue of worrying for our safety and we will be less concerned.

  3. After reading the to articles. I connected "Random Sample," with them. When the aliens in Random Sample have a sour meeting with the lil girl and her bro, they began to destroy city. I think something like the Denver Ordinance could be something to help prevent anything like that from happening. To ensure a welcome, safe & enjoying visit to Earth!

  4. After reading the article, I related it to the story random sample. The ordinance would have been handy for the people in that story. Had they prepared more for aliens, kids would have known how to respond. The adults would have also believed their children when they told them about alien sightings.

  5. This relates to the random sample because the ordinance would have been in very good use because they would know how to pass on info correctly so that the alien sighting could be more credible. Their help would have also made handling the alien easier.

  6. The fact that there was even a vote on this topic ment there was enough public interest for it to be considered. The X-Files film is a good example. The towns people had faith that the monster was out there, even though there had been no conformation. We like to make up stories that are believable but to quite, and sci-fi is a perfect example of that. What is something that you have faith in, that others may or may not believe in?

  7. After reading this article I can see how something like this might be nessicary. Because if a situation like the one in random sample happens then it would be a good thing to have our people be educated on what to do if we come into contact with them.

  8. Similar to others I also thought about the story Puppet Show. I thought of this story because it shows how people actually do think about this kind of stuff. In the story it seemed like people weren't really concerned when the "alien" came to them. I think that the reaction would be much different in today's world. It would be pure pandamonia. But like I said earlier this ordinance even getting on the ballot shows that people are starting to think about this stuff which I think is interesting because that's a step in a new direction.

  9. After reading these articles, I related them to the stories "Puppet Master" and "Random Sample". It reminded me of Puppet Master because the alien in the story wanted to not be under direct government attention and just wanted to speak to a small amount of people. If this ordinance was passed, this situation would be easier to do. These articles reminded me of Random Sample, because in this story one person they used to judge the whole human race wasn't the best example. If there was a commission, then they could be the examples and would handle those alien affairs.

  10. The Denver Ordinance is an interesting concept. Putting funds toward possible extra-terrestrial visits seems foolish to me, because I am one that is skeptical that this will ever happen. I can certainly understand that much of society would disagree and therefore be eager to make sure we have adequate resources to deal with such an "invasion" properly, but I don't think it's necessary regardless of what we have looked at in class.

  11. The Denver Ordinance reminds me of Puppet Show. The people are being given the opportunity to vote on whether something to contact and visit aliens should be made and funded. In the Puppet show it was a similar idea, with them trying to introduce the possibility of an alien coming to Earth and see the reactions of people. In both sinarios it's hard to decided whether it was necessary or logical to have this even be an issue to discuss or visit. I think im both cases as well, it brought some confusion and misunderstanding to some people. It brings up other questions about what would happen if aliens are discovered, how would the world react?

  12. This proposition made me think of 2 stories from class, Random Sample, as well as Puppet Show. Both involve aliens coming to earth, however they demonstrate extreme opposites of what that encounter may entail. For this reason, I think that what was proposed and voted on was not a terrible idea, and considering that it would have been funded by "grants, gifts, and donations" I may very likely have voted in favor of it.

  13. The articles made me think about the stories "The Puppet Show" and "Random Sample" that we read in class. It reminds me of Puppet Show because the extraterrestrial being itself came down to earth and was spotted by humans, creating a large scene. Although the alien in the article didn't interact with humans like the alien in Puppet Show, it still had an impact on the humans.

  14. I connected this article to the short story Puppet Show. The story showed how clueless we are when it comes to aliens and it also showed how we react to them. This ordinance would have helped the people in Cherrybell by letting them know ahead of time what to expect and, if aliens really did come to Earth, it would make sure how safe they were. I just find it interesting that Denver would even come up with an ordinance like that unless there was something or someone, like an alien, to provoke it. Otherwise, I wouldn't think that it is necessary at all.

  15. Though it is a well known fact that the universe is expansive and that there is little reasonable doubt that, somewhere out it that great expance, there is an alien race, I do not think that Aliens or postive Alien relations are at the top of our political priority hierarchy. The article did very little to spark connections to other science fiction but rather sparked a lot of connections to the current political termoil our country is currently in. Money should not be spent on watching for UFOs, at least for now.

  16. After reading this article, it reminds me of Puppet Show because there was one guy that was completely out of norm. In the articles case, I was a group of people who wanted us humans to except that there is more than just us species; "Until the human race fully embraces science and discards irrationalism." I think why a lot of people said no to the whole robot thing is because the people don't trust the government. They would think that the Gov. put cameras to spy on them and already, back in 2010, people didn't trust the president or the gov. I think for the people that said yes to the petition, is they want something new in the society.

  17. When reading the article it brought me to think of puppet show where aliens come down to see what we are like and if we have xenophobia. Also random story where the aliens would judge us based on 1 single person. The council could help stop the death of earth judge by one human girl. But as of right now I would say that I would not vote yes for this ordinance because I feel the money could better go toward something else. That is more of a problem in out society

  18. When I read the article, I connected it to "Puppet Show," and how the human characters made it no secret to the town they lived in that there was indeed an alien in their midst. I think Americans would feel as if their government were prepared for anything if they had a base that would practice for events such as those portrayed in the short story. When the people in charge made it clear to the people of the town in the story, everyone still thought it was strange and exciting, but there was no fuss made, because the assurances of their leaders made the people more relaxed about the situation they found themselves in.

  19. After reading the article, the stories that came to my mind were "Puppet Show," and "Random Sample," because in both stories extraterrestrials or beings that were different than the humans came down to survey Earth and get a better feel of the planet. I wouldn't vote for this ordinance right now, maybe if it was brought up again in a few more years with more research backed with it.

  20. After reading the article I compared it to the story Puppet Show because it seems that what the article is saying is that we should be prepared in case of alien contact. In the "Puppet Show" no one was afraid of Garvane the alien because it looked like they were already prepared for extraterrestrial contact.

  21. After reading Denver Ordinance and Denver Ordinance 300 I thought of the story Random Sample. The reason I thought of Random Sample is because it shows a possible relationship with mankind and or their views of us. I think it would be an awesome idea to have a committee to greet alien visitors to keep peace and keep the people calm.
