  1. My definition of Xenophobia is fearing things that are new or foreign and that you can't understand. These things and ideas aren't meant to offend people but, because they are the norms for those people, they often do. My card said "laugh at what I say" and it was really hard because once people started laughing at me I laughed too and couldn't really talk. It was also hard because one person I talked to had a hard that said "don't look at my face" which was very hard because I couldn't tell what they were supposed to be doing to me because I wasn't looking at their face!

  2. A fear of unknown people, concepts, or objects. The card activity did not confirm or deny my definition because my card was "Every time I speak, start dancing." Dancing isn't exactly an aggressive or personal attack on me because of my unknown trait. I think many science fiction novels attempt to invoke xenophobia in the reader to keep them on the edge throughout the story.

  3. Fear of the unknown, my definition did not change. Not many emotions come to mind, I'm usually not phased by anything. I have a bad habit of just accepting things as they are. However I can assume that it stokes fear or excitement, maybe discomfort. My card was "Argue with me" <== happens to be pretty normal in my life.

  4. I really noticed that it was hard to do what the cards said, when someone had a "don't look at my face" I really just wanted to look at their face. With my "understand my feelings" card people seemed to have a difficult time doing that as well. It was a very interesting activity.

  5. my definition of xenophobia is the hatered or non acceptence of something that is diffrent from yourself. my car which was cross your arms and squint your eyes when you look at me, made me think at how people would act if i was diffrent from them. if people had xenophobia twords me id be very mad and also sad because i was trying to be like everyone else but they all wouldent let me.

  6. Xenophobia is the dislike or fear of the unknown. In the card activity I had don't look at my face. This card made the activity weird for me because It seemed like people had no interested in me and did not feel comfortable talking. This reaction is due to emotions such as fear or distrust Xenophobia discuss these emotions because they are present in human society. My quote was a good portrayal of this concept because people would not look at me while I laughed and danced at what they were saying.

  7. Xenophobia in my opinion is the general fear of something unknown or something not understood. The card activity ties in with this definition because people are not good in awkward situations and can get nervous or uncomfortable because something is foreign to strange to them. For example my card said "Don't look at my face" now in a real world situation this would make me uncomfortable when i would be trying to speak with someone and they went out of their way to avoid looking at me. Overall Xenophobia ties in perfectly with sci-fi because science fiction focuses mainly on the unknown and can cause fear among some people.

  8. Xenophobia is somethings extreme fear of things which are strange. People were instructed by my card to not look at my face. This was odd for me to experience, because even if people are not maintaining eye contact, they still occasionally will look at your face. It makes it seem as if they don't want to talk to you. With this concept and xenophobia, this is quite easily what it could be like to be feared by someone else, just because you are different than them.

  9. Xenophobia is a fear of something foreign or unfamiliar. Emotions such as fear, anger, and distrust can be connected to xenophobia. My card said "Take everything I say as a personal insult!" If someone was unfamiliar with me they may not be as forgiving of some of the things I said and might take them as insults.

  10. Xenophobia i think is just being sacred of the unknown. In class with the cards everyone seemed to be a little more shy or on edge because they did not want to possibly have to do something that was awkward. My card said "laugh at what i say" and i feel like some people may have not wanted to approach me because of that. Over all i think that xenophobia is jsut feeling awkward/uncomfortable

  11. My definition of xenophobia is the tendency of all things to resist or fear change. People value having a set routine and a set way of thinking and doing things, and when they are interrupted from what they normally do and see, they want to push no ideas away so they can stick to what they know. My card said "argue with me" which was difficult because it was hard to hold actual conversation, without getting frustrated and quitting.

  12. My definition of science fiction was very close to the definition read in class, that it's a fear of the unknown. And the card activity confirmed that because I personally looked at my card before the activity started because I'm already shy and not good at communication so being thrown out of another loop made me very anxious. I had an interrupt me card and I think even if I didn't look at the card, I would feel just anxious because of forced socialization since I'm used to being interrupted. Xenophobia in general is fear and anxiousness and the reactions to that fear is what makes the stories.

  13. Please accept my ideas! I think that xenophobia has a lot to do with the fear of difference. It doesn't have to be alien or foreign, just strange. I don't like xenophobia when it deals with things on this planet. I think that there should be peace on the planet, but if there are aliens than I think that humans need to be afraid because we are going to die. Again, please accept my ideas. Thank you.

  14. I think that xenophobia is a fear of something different and unknown. The card activity would make more sense in a school and social setting because it has to deal with alienating people for an unknown reason. My card said, “Laugh at what I say!” When I would talk people would laugh and it did not bother me because I knew it was a game, but if I did not I probably would have gotten very annoyed. I feel like this exercise were to be real, people would be feeling either pretty good or bad about themselves. In the “alien” form of ideas, people will definitely look at them differently and probably not in a very nice way. Judgement would be a big component to xenophobia.

  15. My definition of Xenophobia is the fear of something foreign. The card activity made me think of Xenophobia when people would read your card before doing what it was told. The emotions I think of Xenophobia are fear, shy, hatred, and insane. The card that I had was "Don't look at my face."

  17. Fear of the unknown , i don't really understand how the activity was supposed to connect to xenophobia. Science fiction is all about the unknown cause its predictions of the future that we haven't experienced yet.

  18. My definition of xenophobia is a fear of the unknown. The card activity made me think about how most of the time when not dealing with extremes (such as sci-fi topics like aliens or other things of the sort) generally rather than fear or hatred of the unknown, it translates more toward just making others uncomfortable. My card was "take everything I say as a personal insult" which I was able to decipher pretty quickly based on how people reacted toward me, however it made me consider how others may react to me if they didn't understand me, or the things that I was saying. They may immediately jump to the conclusion that what I had to say was meant to be hurtful or offensive.

  19. Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown. The card activity that we did showed how weird things can be when we're unsure of something that everyone else is aware of. It's a very odd and vulnerable feeling when someone is faced with something they don't know/understand. No one likes feeling left in the dark. My card said "Every time I speak, start dancing" when you're trying to carry on a normal conversation and someone starts doing something that is out of the ordinary there's always this suspicion. The feeling of almost conspire among the people around you.

  20. My definition of the word xenophobia is best understood when I break down the word. The Latin root phobia is the fear of something. The root meaning of xeno is everything in this world. This can be a living or animate object. Anything that is in this world is part of the root xeno. The card activity showed me how xenophobia is implicated and felt like. If it is uncomfortable for someone to speak out and be social, that is xenophobia. This is my definition of the word xenophobia.

  21. My definition of the word xenophobia is intense or irrational dislike or fear or people from other countries. connecting that to science fiction in all the story's of aliens and monsters the people have reacted in unreasonable ways instead of trying to figure out what happened and trying to understand them.

  22. Xenophobia is an irrational fear towards foreign objects, ideas, and Change. And in science fiction out of every story that Ive read Aliens and monsters kill people, change causes mass panic and people Try to stop whatever changes them.

  23. My definition of Xenophobia is fearing things and that you can't understand everything. My card said “Don't reply” and i felt bad because i wasn't replying and it was hard.
