Too Complex? Are You Thinking About Frankenstein?
Based upon your short story readings, the introductory material, Frankenstein excerpts, the Robot Ad project, The Great Mutato, and individual assessment, what are some conclusions that you might proclaim regarding The Frankenstein Complex? Explain, defend, argue, and think. Response is due by 2:30p.m. today

Some conclusions I have gathered from reading these stories based on the Frankenstein Complex is we always fear what we create in a way. When you really think about it, sometimes we have a fear of what we cook, wondering if we burnt it or if its bad. This also goes for what living things we create. We fear that they may do bad things, just as my cooking could make someone choke. I'm not saying I'm a bad chef, (I am actually great at cooking) it just's an example of what we create, why we can fear it.
ReplyDeleteSome conclusions that I have found about the Frankenstein Complex is that they all relate to creations that people make that later end up not going there way. If it is turning against them or just not working out the way that they expected it too. All of it relating to the Frakenstein Complex in its own unique way
ReplyDeleteEvery story has a creature, being, or creation that has attack or gone against what was intended for them. For a robot, they follow the three rules of robotics, which means that they can be controlled. In the great Mutato, a "monster" is attacking and scaring people. These instances are a fear of people being scared of a creation turning against society.
ReplyDeleteGiven the stories and the video we watched it seems that there is a reoccurring theme going on. it seems that there is no regard for safety. Everything is pushed to the limits when something is made. For instance the great mutato was a subject of a greedy angry man who then shunned his own creation. What really pushes it though is the thought that ethics and morals just outright don't exist in these stories.
ReplyDeleteAs a whole I think in all the stories we've covered there has either been a fear or hatred towards the unknown beings. The fear or hatred was present because there was no knowledge about the beings. The most feared out of the stories we've read are things such as monsters or robots.
ReplyDeleteThe Frankenstein Complex in humans raises real fears because robots cant really be qarunteed to be safe. Artificial Intelligence is dangerous which is why the human factor should never be taken out. Like in the military there is always someone controlling or at least monitoring the drones and umv's because they have weapons on/in them and they need a human operater to make sure the equipment stays on task and on target.
ReplyDeleteI believe that humans should have some fear towards what they make because humans can be destructive. That being said I do believe that we don't only do wrong. It also seems like the Frankenstein complex can also be somewhat a fear of ourselves rather than just what we make.
ReplyDeleteThe Frankenstein complex is a good way for storytellers to show the possible outcomes of advancements in technology. We could make mar machine robots today if we wanted, but the fear of loss of control would be too strong.
ReplyDeleteThe frankenstein complex always seems deal with some sort of self-awareness. When a robot or a machine starts questioning and thinking about the world around it, it is gaining a human characteristic. And because it is showing human thought patterns, we have to wonder if there is morality involved as well. If the things we create can learn to question, and even love, the distinction between them and us becomes less and less apparent.
ReplyDeleteA conclusion I would proclaim regarding the Frankenstein Complex is that what we create haunts us. I think this because in Frankenstein, the monster wants revenge on his creator for not making him a partner. In The Great Mutato, the "monster" created by the scientist wants to live in a city and live life like a normal person, so he sneaks into homes of the townspeople, burns a substance to make them lose consciousness, then does what he wants in their homes.
ReplyDeleteSome conclusions of the "Frankenstein Complex" are to be careful with technology and the things you create with it. Like many of the stories we have read in class a lot of the time it has to do with robots and how people either fear them or even envy them. The "Frankenstein Complex" makes us think about the choices we make and how we should react to the choices we make and the things we create. Some of the things we create can haunt us in the future. "Mimicry" is a great example of the "Frankenstein Complex" in that Fen is being haunted by a robot her father created in her image that is mimicking everything she does.
ReplyDeleteI conclude that our technological advances have a greater chance to come back at us than our biological advances. Our science is not at a point to craft monsters from the dead or make strange beings in a lab. The stories, excluding The Great Mutato, tackle technology. Whether that's a super computer or a robot
ReplyDeleteI think The Frankenstein Complex was created to show that science should not be taken too far. All of the stories we read, gave scenerios for what could go wrong. With every single story, the author was trying to prove a point of what can go wrong, will go wrong. However, since all of these are science fiction stories, I wonder how accurate they would be if the plot actually took place. I wonder if all these stories are just another example of xenophobia, and we make stories to explain the fears that we have.
ReplyDeleteSome conclusions that might be proclaimed regarding the Frankenstein Complex are that machines opposed to humans are the main factor in this subject. Mens creations are not always as wonderful and useful in terms of danger, threat, competion, intelligance, and emotion. Humans are very differnt and blessed with powerful minds with imagination and emotion however when creations are made, threats can be made against the public, the creation, or an individual. The Frankenstein Complex contains the ideas of the struggle of advancing technology or maintaining the gift of natural charateristics.
ReplyDeleteThroughout this unit by reading these stories, I've come to the conclusion that no good can come from trying to create things smarter or as smart as humans by way of technology. In all our stories as well as the x-files episode, people were so busy playing god and "creating," they didn't realize the menace they were producing and then didn't take responsibility for those creations. All the robots/creature presented had something distinctly human-like about them but at the same time lacked human mannerisms that it just made them creepy with a sense of superiority. All the creations thought they were better than their creators and the humans around them which is what i think made them a menace or in some eyes "monsters." They had no regard for human life or if they did then humans still felt threatened and continued to call them monsters. The Frankenstein Complex is a complex of irresponsibility.
ReplyDeleteOne conclusion I can draw about the Frankenstein Complex is that our creations may be miss understood rather than out to harm us. Just like in the novel Frankenstein, the monster was miss understood and scared because other people have treated him wrong. Therefore he seeked revenge on his creator
ReplyDeleteFrom what we have read or watched in class, the Frankenstein Complex idea is about humans fearing the machines that they create. There is also an ongoing theme that is created in these stories of the tension between robots and humans. There is a jealousy between the robots and the humans on who is better than the other. For example, in the story “Eyebem”, the robots seem to almost be competing with the humans and arguing that they are better and more intelligent. The main theme that is relevant in all stories is the idea that humans can fear the robots or machines they create. In “The Great Mutato”, all of the towns people feared this monster that was created by one of them. They didn’t know what it was capable of and was scared that it would come and hurt them so they wanted to destroy it. There is a fear in all of the stories that we have read and it is always the humans fearing what the robots are capable of.
ReplyDeleteMy conclusion to the frankenstein complex is that some people are xenophobic to new technological advances. Also, most people fear the creator for making technology that does scare everbody. An example would be the creator of the Great Mutato. Some people doubt that technology will malfunction. For example, in "Mimicry," Fen and her dad are surprised that Mita is not working the way its supposed to. Also, some people value technology a lot. In "Mimicry," the humans treat the robots as humans.
ReplyDeleteThe Frankenstein Complex shows us that everything humans make will come back to harm us. In stories we have read the human's creation ended up causing chaos. However, in the Great Mutato we can see that the creation actually didn't have a sinister plot in mind. Something else I noticed was that the robots started developing human emotion, in Epicac the computer developed a love for the girl, in Eyebem the robot acted just like a human, and in Mimicry it seems as though Mita wants to be Fen.

ReplyDeleteSome conclusions that I can make about The Frankenstein Complex from everything that we did is first we are terrified about some things that man creates, like Robots. Most people are afraid that Robots are going to take over the world, when we know that the people building them can make them not do that, that also doesn’t mean that everything we create is perfect. Second there is a lot of human emotion, like in the X-files when they could have killed the kid that the doctor genetically modified, they didn’t because he was still a human beings and we are, too.
Through all of our readings and discussions I can conclude that the Frankenstein Complex is prevalent everyday. Much more than a Romantic idea, our technological advancements have negative aspects as much as the benefits. One example is the computer, deemphasizing the importance of penmanship and grammar. All of our technology may come back to haunt us just as the Creature did.
ReplyDelete"The Frankenstein Complex" can be about creation we fear. but also it can come back to the creator. Such as in "The Great Muato" the creation didn't want to hurt anyone. The creation was fearing the creator and the townspeople that wanted to kill him. Although he wasn't perfect he was still human and had his own thoughts and emotions. This shows that "The Frankenstein Complex" can apply to both sides.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading all the stories and doing the projects, I would conclude that the overall idea of the Frankenstein Complex is machine vs. humanity. The humans feared a creature that was created by man, such as in the X-files. Also, the humans thought they were better than the robotics or vice versa. I think this concept could change the way humans live their lives. It is very easy for us to judge based on physical appearance, or what people say about someone else. We tend to listen to these people because of peer pressure. We may not realize how much a person can impact our lives, even if they look different. For example, aliens and other foreign creatures can improve human life by technology, social and political aspects, etc. If we learn to accept others for who they are and not what they look like, our world can be a peaceful place, and our everyday lives will become much better.
ReplyDeleteBy reading these stories, I've realized that there can be no good from trying to create things that are above humans intellectually. In all our stories as well as the x-files episode, they became lost in their creations losing sight in what their creation could become if it became too intelligent. All the creations we read about or saw had something distinctly human-like about them. All the creations thought they were socially above their creators and the humans around them. The creations also had no regard for human life which is something that sparks concern because what would happen if there was a mass scale or robots/monsters that had no concern for human life and felt above humans?
ReplyDeleteSomethings that I have learned from reading these short storys about the Frankenstein Complex, is that we are sometimes afraid of what me make and it comes back to haunt us. Like in the story Mimicry by Maggie Slater, Fen was very afraid of the robot servant. The robot servant was following Fens every movement. Later on, Fen finds out that the robot servant wants to be just like Fen. And this story is like the Frankenstein Complex because of how Fen is afraid of the creation of the robot servant and how she haunts Fen.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading theses stories I've realized in all the stories that the technology that we think will help adavance us in the world. In reality it will hurt us I personally think that we are inventing more than we can handle.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the Frankenstein Complex I can make some conclusions from reading the short stories. The Frankenstein complex doesn't really exist because If you fear something you create then why create it or don't get rid of it. For example in Mimicry the inventor fears his creation but doesn't distroy or sell Mita. The stories and books are just folktale and in the real world I have never seen someone be scared or fear there creation
ReplyDeleteRegarding the text we have read over the Frankenstein project I can say that all experimental projects and creations will be out to hurt us. Such as in Mimicry when the servant robot Meta tries to replace her master, Fen by killing her. Also in the X-Files film the monster tried to harm people by gassing them in their own homes.
