  1. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of foreign or new things. The card activity made me think about the definition because I had to interact with people I don't talk to. I tried to avoid an awkward interaction. My quote from my card said, "laugh at everything I say." I had a weird feeling as to why was every one was laughing at me for no reason. Xenophobia can relate to science fiction because if a story involved an alien and human interaction, the human could be afraid of the alien even though the alien is kind. Another example is that a character could be afraid of the new technological advancements.

  2. Xenophobia is the intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries. Looking at cards such as “ignore me” or “don’t look at my face” supports my definition because humans tend to do this to others, especially if they look different. My card was “don’t look at my face” and I understand the feelings others get when they experience someone doing this to them. I realize how offensive and inconsiderate the quotes on the cards are. I wouldn’t want someone to feel the same way I did experiencing the words on the card. I cannot imagine anyone who would be frightened of the people from other countries. It doesn’t seem fair, and I would be offended as would someone else. E.T. and Rise of the Planet of the Apes are examples that describe how xenophobia is related to science fiction. At first, the children were scared of the alien, just like the humans were scared of the talking apes. Throughout both incredible stories, the humans were able to connect with the creatures and become alliances.

  3. My definition of Xenophobia is the fear of something new or strange that someone is not comfortable with. The card activity is a great example of Xenophobia because many people were very uncomfortable doing the activity. I know I was myself and my card said "Nod at me" and I couldn't figure out why everyone was nodding at me. A lot of connections I made with the card activity and Xenophobia is that nobody likes to be told to do something new or uncommon than what they are used to. Some films that relate to Xenophobia are Aliens, E.T., and Rise of the Planet of the Apes because in the films many people were scared of the new changes or advances that they saw.

  4. My definition of Xenophobia is a fear of something strange, foriegn or new. In the card activity it shows Xenophobia because everybody that was doing this activtiy was uncomfortable. They had a fear of not knowing what to do cause it was something our class hasn't done before. My card said "Repeat everything I say" so everybody was just repeating me. The films like Aliens,E.T or Rise of the planet of the apes all have Xenophobia in it because it shows the fear people had with the changes being made.

  5. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of anything different, or strange, compared to what you are accustomed to. The card activity helped me understand xenophobia because it was very odd seeing people act differently around me because of what my card said. My card said "take anything a say personally offensive", or something close to that. Emotions that can be connected the term and science fiction are fear and curiosity.

  6. The definition of xenophobia is to fear change. The card provided further insight into this idea because people reacted differently to what I said. It didn't bother me because I knew quickly what the change was and how to deal however had I not known one or both of those variables I can understand how the idea of change would be concerning.

  7. Xenophobia is the fear of someone out of the norm or different form you. The card activity demonstrated xenophobia perfectly, my card said "agree with me then disagree with me in the same sentence". It was difficult to carry on a conversation with someone when I thought that the other person and I thought the same way and then the other person would disagree. It made me very confused and kept making me question what I was saying. Some cards said "ignore me", which demonstrates what we do to someone when they seem different. We can see xenophobia in our daily lives, even if we see someone dressed differently we might walk the other way or avoid them.

  8. Xenophobia (to me) is the fear of NOT accepting things, subjects, ideas-outside of your personal "box/bubble zone". Doing the card activity in class helped me support the idea of Xenophobia because students (including myself) were scared to interact with others. The cards made us activate our "inner awkwardness", those not along our social norms. My card said, "Accept my ideas." I went around and everyone agreed to everything I said, that in itself is against human nature. It's in our chemistry that we "must" argue to everything around us. We can see Xenophobia in Science Fiction just by looking at the broad idea of aliens. Humans are enclosed in their inner bubbles and don't want to interact with anything out of their "bubble". We become scared, angry, defensive if anything not "normal" invades our lives/"space".

  9. The definition of xenophobia is the fear of someone changing something or doing something out of their normal routine. The card activity on Monday demonstrated xenophobia, because the cards had somethings that we don't do normally. My card said "Tap your foot while I'm talking" This was weird because it almost felt like I was being rushed. The reaction for we was weird because I was almost being rushed and I hate being rushed. But overall this was a good demonstration of xenophobia.

  10. Xenophobia is the fear of something foreign and/or strange, it has the ability to make people uncomfortable and awkward. Much like, the activity we did with the cards, they depicted actions we don't consciously do in day to day conversations, so doing them felt off to both the person doing them as well as the witnesses. My card said "take everything I say personally" and when people did it to me, it made me very uncomfortable cause I didn't know how to act in return, the concept was "foreign" to me and I was anxious because of it, therefore I think it demonstrated xenophobia well.

  11. xenophobia by definition is the fear of change or new things but I think it could also be related to fear of more than just a change in something old to new but maybe even a change in themselves or how other people perceive them. it could also apply to when something is new and unfamiliar because that is still a change. the activity we did in class shows this point we are afraid of being unaccepted or treated differently and I think xenophobia can be related to this.

  12. Xenophobia is the fear of something foreign or different, It can also be a fear of something new or change. This relates to the activity we did in class because we where afraid to talk because we felt fear/xenophobia of that we would be rejected or not wanted by what was on our card.

  13. Xenophobia is the fear of something strange or the fear of change. Aliens, Government, and a few other things can relate to xenophobia. The card activity was a perfect example because we had to act strange to the person.

  14. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of change or the fear of something that is new The card activity we did in class helped us understand xenophobia because the cards was not how class normally is. Many people were uncomfortable with cards like "ignore me" or "don't look at me" because they didn't know how to react to it. There was a fear of something out of the ordinary which is why it was a good example of xenophobia

  15. My definition of Xenophobic is the change of way of how people act towards other people. Everyone is different and act differently around certain people. That is how the example in class went the other day, we had to do things differently and act differently towards everyone. That is people in everyday in life, change in human behavior. People will act differently around a friend or a family member but not the same with a stranger they just met because they are comfortable. Or if you're around with someone you don't really like, you tend to act differently. So what I learned, my definition of xenophobia would be the change in human behavior and interaction in everyday situations or people

  16. Xenophobia is the fear of change or differences. The card activity was a good example xenophobic people. My card said to ignore me and that's exactly what people did. I would try to converse and people would walk away or just stare at me blankly. I was wondering if I had something on my face or if I was that displeasing. Then I realized it must have been my card. This was a good demonstration of xenophobia

  17. My definition of Xenophobia would be an irrational animosity or fear of people from other backgrounds. The card activity was a great illustration of what xenophobia is. Going through it with all the different actions on the card made people feel awkward or a sense of anxiety around someone that had a card they didn't like, or even had someone come up to them and they didn't want to do the action of the card. This is a great word to connect things with in Science Fiction because it is all about the future and what can become of it with all the different, endless possibilities. You never know what the future will behold and people have to be accepting of whatever it may be; very similar to the "Puppet Show" story we read in class.

  18. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of foreign people or ideas. I think the card idea connected this well because it showed some of the things you might do if you were xenophobic to a person or idea.

  19. My Definition of xenophobia is a fear of unknown people and new ideas. The card activity connected to this well because we really didn't like the idea of doing what they said.

  20. My definition of xenophobia is fear of foreigners or foreign ideas. The card game was a great example of xenophobia because is showed what xenophobic people might thing or act towards you. An emotion I can connect to xenophobia would be fear. Most people who are xenophobic fear something that is new in their life. The quote I had on my card was "don't look at my face". This was hard to understand because I'm used to people making eye contact to me when they talk.

  22. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of change or difference. The card activity showed me the definition of xenophobia because it was other peoples reactions to a certain characteristic that i was being assigned to through the card. Science fiction is mainly about situations in which the future or past would have or could be like and xenophobia mostly examples people’s reactions towards bizarre or just regular things.

  26. xenophobia to me is the fear of difference. Unnatural and strange. To be afraid of what isn't you or what isn't normal. For me xenophobia clicks perfectly into my brain. In my past I dyed my hair multiple colors. Each one getting me new and stranger looks. People would back away from me or whisper words behind my back. They were xenophobic. The card activity definitely gave perspective to xenophobia in all cases. It showed many different types of xenophobia and how they can affect society as a whole.

  27. xenophobia as I see it is the fear of things different from what you know, things aberrant from what you see day to day.

  28. Xenophobia, to me, is the fear of change. My card was "laugh at everything I say" and it felt weird. When I would say something, they would laugh and then we would get into a laughing frenzy. It was hard to ignore the people who had "ignore me" on it because that was one thing that I would not do. Everyday we go through changes how you deal with will determine how xenophobic you are.

  29. My definiton of xenophobia is the fear of the unknown. When I was first handed the card, I was told I could not look at it. I had to put it on my forhead, and see what other people did when I walked up to them. I was a little worried at first, until everyone started dancing in front of me. Then it was the most hilarious thing. "When ever I speak, start dancing." I think we all have a fear of the unknown, because we don't know what to expect. As soon as we learn what the unknown is, we tend to embrase it.

  30. My definition of xenophobia would be something foreign of something uncomfortable to us. My card had "Interrupt me" on it, and is made me feel like I was an outcast, ignored by everyone. This made me think that people were uncomfortable acknowledging me. Some of the feelings I would group with xenophobia would be fear, distrust and uncertainty.
