"Modern Prometheus" or "The Great Mutato?"

What Does The X-Files Episode, Modern Prometheus, make us consider about Frankenstein, the Frankenstein Complex, or ourselves?  Please use specifics whenever possible.  This blog response should be completed at the end of class today.

  1. The X-Files episode makes us consider the fact that humans can create something that will ultimately destroy or interfere with our lives. The Frankenstein Complex is a valid fear because humans have created powerful robots already that have the potential to kill (i.e. cars). We must be willing to face the consequences of our creations in order to advance in the world of technology.

  2. Monsters are rarely the kind we think of. Often, the true monsters in life are the ones who look like the average person. The most monstrous are the ones who judge, and those who lead the mobs and the witch hunts. Monsters should be defined by actions, not appearance.

  3. This episode reminds us to not judge a book by its cover. He was seen as a monster just because he looked different, (and took advantage of sleeping women, but for some reason the townspeople look past that) but on the inside he just wanted to be treated like a normal person. When the mob came to the house to confront and kill the beast, this immediately popped into my mind:

  4. This episode shows the Frankenstein complex in action. These people greatly feared this mutated man which was created by other humans. Yet the episode puts us briefly in the monster's shoes and what he's feeling being persecuted. There's a good chance that these monstrosities have feelings to. This episode also shows the cross over between Frankenstein Complex and xenophobia since we also fear the robots/monsters not knowing exactly what they are and how they're feeling.

  5. The X-Files episode shows how humans create things that they cant control in the end. This should make us think when creating something new and bringing it into the world, can it be controlled? The whole reason Frankenstein is feared is because no one can control him and they are afraid of how he looks.

  6. The Great Mutato is very much like Frankenstein's Monster. They both are thought to be dangerous. Those who see them as such attack them. We must look at ourselves, and if we make assumptions. What are the ramifications of those assumptions. Is the attack they make not just against the monster. But a larger idea underneath. What if the attack represents the way society destroys. How it can take something strange, that may be seeking identity and crush it. A society that is against identity, and individualism. Which can be seen as a threat to society. Going against the grain.

  7. The X-Files video shows how we are scared of something that looks different from us and how quickly we will call it a monster instead of figuring out what is actually is. Humans make drastic conclusions and accusations in order to make something different look bad.

  8. This episode makes us consider the fact that The Great Mutato was a creation by the scientist. It makes me reconsider Frankenstein, and the concept of the Frankenstein Complex, by a creature just wanting to be loved and accepted rather than feared. He grieved for his father and wished for things he knew he could not achieve, or hold. This is human nature to want such things, making the monster, in turn, more human-like. The scientist feared his own creation, just like in the Frankenstein story.

  9. The X-Files episode, "Modern Prometheus", makes me consider that not everything us humans create is bad. The Frankenstein complex is the fear of what we create and that was shown in "Modern Prometheus". Prometheus gave humans something that has helped them greatly and in this episode, the monster gave the little town knowledge that things they create aren't always bad. It's like the saying goes "You can't judge a book by its cover."

  10. The X-files video makes us realize that some things we create may/will interfere with the human way of life. The Frankenstein Complex will/should always be taken into account when humans create new objects, as some objects have caused harm to us.

  11. The X-Files Episode, Modern Prometheus, makes us consider the fact that there will be many different obstacles along the way in life, some in which we will be afraid of, but we have to be able to deal with what's going to happen to be able to advance in the future. The Frankenstein Complex is a fear of ourselves, and sometimes when we see something different we are afraid because it is not what we are used to seeing.

  12. In the Episode "The Great Mutato" it makes us really think about the frankenstein complex. It makes us think about what we create and what it does that affect human interactions.

  13. The X-Files episode, Modern Prometheus, made me think about the different ways a "monster" can be presented. The episode showed Frankenstein as a human with defects, emotions and ambitions rather than a monster, which evokes a feeling of empathy. This episode shows how often people are prejudiced towards things that are different as well as the fear of creation and loss of control.

  14. The great mutato makes us think about how we do not always think about the consequences of what we create and what effect it could have on our lives, and how our creation may become more than we thought in a bad way. Also, it makes us think that the "monsters" we create are indeed not monsters but we are ourselves for making them so, they just simply want to live yet we see them as monstrosities that must be destroyed, which seems hypocritical as we also created them in the first place. One could argue, is it us as humans who are the real monsters in the first place?

  15. The X-Files episode relates to modern day because there are so many things that we are constantly creating that can destroy our life when we think it will help. A lot of the technology we have been creating has the potential to ruin or interfere with our life and we just want them for what good they do but not take the bad that also comes along.

  16. I feel that the X-files episode "Modern Prometheus" is more or less an adaptation of Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein". By doing this, it allows us to see the themes present in the original story, which have been distorted by the numerous renditions of the story. At this point most people see Frankensteins monster as a stupid green monster that kills people, as opposed to the original character who is incredibly intelligent and capable of emotion. I am glad that it was a more faithful adaptation than other films or stories have been.

  17. The X-Files episode, "Modern Prometheus" shows us that we fear the creation that is unknown to us. In this case the man who created this object feared and hated his product. The creation was different and was created out of mistake so then considered him to be a monster. It shows that as humans we all desire something we don't have. The father wanted a son to have the same outlook on things as he did and accepted the "Mutato" as his own, and then the "Mutato" desired to have a mate so he could live like humans did and his father.

  18. The x-files episode with the great mutato puts a twist on the Frankenstein complex. normally it's the things that we create that we have to fear because of their ability to destroy us; but in this episode what was created didn't destroy, but our inability to accept it was what hurt people.

  19. In the X files episode the Great Mutato it relates to the Frankinstien complex by showing that sometimes our creations may not be appealing on the outside but if you take time to look deeper you may see something way different. Just because someone or something is different doesnt mean that it is a mistake or a terrible creature. The X files does a good job at showing this.

  20. The X-Files episode Modern Prometheus makes us consider the emotions of the monster we are capable of creating. The towns people easily had a group mentality and wanted to destroy the monster once someone claimed that it killed his father. Even though the man was the one who created and brought the monster to life.

  21. This X-Files episode has us consider the idea that in everything we create there are going to be positive aspects and negative aspects. For example, motorcycles are a cool, efficient way to get around although on the downside they can be very dangerous and threaten peoples lifes. Our own knowledge can ultimately help us or destroy us. We have all the control, using it ties into the Frankenstein Complex.

  22. I think it does. It is hard to say we dont teach our race things that make us different. We do create things that arent good for us like food. Our food is not good. well certain types. It has caused not only humans problems but animals as well. I think we really need to look at long term effects on things and stop worrying about the present as much.

  23. It's the things that we create that we have to fear because of their ability to destroy u in this episode of the x files it was what was created didn't destroy, but our inability to accept it was what hurt people. it like did a total flip on how to look at the Frankenstin complex.it also sho that the real monsters tht are created are the ones who have created the monster in the first place. it is there fault for what they did and they create an issue for others.

  24. This episode made me see that we as humans do fear what we create. Frankenstein was a man made creation turned monster. Now we fear all our creations will turn into monsters. This also made me think about who the real monster is. Is it really the creation? or is it actually the creator? What was the driving reason to go through with the creation? I believe that it was probably a selfish reason, only in order to benefit ones self.
