Xenophobia In Science Fiction?

What is your definition of xenophobia, and how did the card activity make you think about your definition? What emotions can you assign or connect with the term and concept of xenophobia in Science Fiction? Please use the quote from your card in your response. This blog response is due during class on 2-10-12.

  1. Xenophobia is the fear or hatred of the foreign or unknown. My card was "Ignore me!" and it made me think that if people had xenophobia they might ignore something or someone unknown. Having xenophobia would be pretty bad since there is a lot of things unknown out there so they person might become pretty ignorant and afraid especially in the world of science fiction.

  2. My definition for xenophobia is- a fear of aliens or foreign type. In the card activity, my card was "ignore me!" and this made me think that xenophobia is hard when you are the one people are afraid of or ignoring. During the activity, people didn't talk to me because that is what the sign said to do, but it made me feel distant between them all. Some people's was "laugh at everything I say" and that one to me didn't really feel like xenophobia because at least they were getting attention!

  3. Xenophobia is basically a fear of foreigners, and during the card activity, it made everyone be thrown into a stereotype. Its like people that treat people based on their class, how the dress, look, who they hang out with, anything. My card was "Accept my ideas!" and people treated me better than say, the people that had the cards like "Don't look at my face!" and "Ignore me" and things like that. It's just something that humans do is stereotype, sometimes without even realizing it.

  4. Xenophobia: The fear and/or hatred of the strange and alien. The activity brought to light what people would do to those they fear or "hate". With xenophobia, there is a strong sense of nationalism, or pride in oneself, since one would believe they are superior to foreigners. The card I was assigned was "Take everything i say as a personal insult." This was not directly apparent by those who I had talked with, but the underlying tones of offense were there. These tones of offense would be underlying in the life of xenophobia, since those with it would be terribly offended that a foreigner would be worthy enough to talk to them.

  5. My card during the activity was "ignore me" and when i looked up the definition it said "A person unduly fearful or contemptuous of that which is foreign, especially of strangers or foreign peoples." So when i think of xenophobia i mainly think of stereotyping and how people act to you if you are new, weird to them, and not part of there group like if you are no one to them.

  6. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of aliens or other foreign people. This card activity showed how everyone was kinda shy from eachother and didnt show good things toward them. I can connect xenophobia with the emotion of fear or dislike. My card was "Interrupt me!"

  7. Xenophobia is the fear of aliens and illegal aliens. this card activity, in my opinion, really did not make me think about xenophobia."nod at me" was my card, and i don't see how this can relate to xenophobia. The emotions of fear and sadness tie to xenophobia because if aliens started killing everyone i would be sad and scared. Also if people from another country started killing everyone i would be sad ans scared.

  8. Xenophobia is the fear people have for the alien or unknown. The card activity was to symbolize that people react to different things in different ways. My card was “Accept my ideas!”. Everything I said people would agree with me, even though it might not be what they really felt. I think that it wasn’t so much as the belief of what people thought but the different reactions that were experienced. I feel that xenophobia is a key factor in many science fiction works. People react to strange things such as in “Planet of the Apes”.

  9. My definition of xenophobia would be the fear or automatic stereotyping of foreigners based on what they look or act like. My card had the phrase "Nod at me!" Although it wasn't a particularly strange card, it was easy to see how someone might feel stereotyped when everyone reacts to them in the exact same way. There is no way to have a conversation with someone without getting the same reaction and feeling like people are only seeing one side of you. I think it is safe to say that the concept of xenophobia might make someone feel like an outsider or different from everyone else no matter how hard they try to be the same. The same concept goes for the insinuator. In the card game I felt obligated to treat the person how the card said, or their "stereotype."

  10. Xenophobia is the fear of foreign or alien people and things, and the card activity made me think about segregation or judgement. If we think about it, there was a time when an African-American was segregated against and feared.... A few emotions to connect with Xenophobia are: both emotional and possibly physical pain, fear, and an encroachment on hatred.

  11. Xenophobia is the fear or hate of something foreign or strange and can be related to the card activity because you don't know how the world is thinking of you and become scared when you see others reactions. My card said,"Take everything I say as a personal insult" which made me feel self conscience when others responded to me. I did however see how people didn't like and possibly hated not knowing the perception people had of them and the foreign idea.

  12. Xenophobia is the fear of foreign things or things that are alien, placing inaccurate bias and stereotyping them. i had a card that said laugh at what I say, and it made me see that xenophobia is viewed through more than just hatred toward the person or object, it can be any number of interactions but none the less having only one type of reaction is bad for each person in individualized. I feel that for the most part though xenophobia sparks hatred and segregation.

  13. Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown or of foreigners or strangers. In this activity, my card said "Don't look at my face". This activity made me think about the stereotypes that we assume in this world and that people will judge you before they even know you. People would pass by and not pay any attention to you. Other cards like "Agree with me" would send a false message to the person thinking that they actually agree with their opinions.

  14. In the activity we just preformed, xenophobia was showed in the fact of people who got the negative cards like, “Don’t look at my face,” or “Ignore Me.” Those cards would translate into the lowest people of society because they are “bad” presumably. The card I had was the, “Interrupt Me.” This card would represent the middle class people because it is not as bad as the negative cards, but not good like the positive cards. It is a truly neutral card. Higher than some, but lower than others. This shows xenophobia because of the fact we are scared to talk to different levels of society.

  15. My personal definition of Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown, or anything alien in nature. The main emotions that I can associate with xenophobia would be that of fear, and unassurance. Both of which can be found in quite a bit of Sci-fi stories. The Twilight zone in its self demonstrates the nature of the unknown, and its effect on humans as a whole. Both fear, and unassurace are used to a great extent in the show to further encompass suspense around the particular episode. The card activity brought out a liittle bit of fear in me, I really didn;t know what the nSo overall, the emotions that I associate with Sci-fi in the realm of xenophobia, are fear and unassurance.

  16. I would say that xenophobia is the fear of what is unknown or foreign to man and things that we don't understand. This is how are card game made me feel. My card "Interrupt Me" kept me confused on why people would break conversations and talk while I was talking. It gives you a feeling of non-understanding. Which I think is the base of xenophobia.

  17. The note card that I was given said "When I'm done talking, repeat what I say; start with "I hear what you're saying..." I couldn't connect my note card with xenophobia alone but the exercise as a whole, I think, had a lot to do with xenophobia. The idea that we become frightened with what people are going to say or how they are going to react because of something we don't know, something that is "foreign" to our knowledge. Xenophobia plays a major role throughout science fictional text because they are specific pieces that are meant to stretch the human mind out of their comfort zone and think beyond what their common knowledge has always been which often times causes conflict within the human mind due to the idea of the "unknown."

  18. My definition of xenophobia is as fear of strange things. The card activity displayed xenophobia especially to the people with card like "don't look at my face" or "take everything I say as an insult". These cards gave us a bias towards them, which is kind of like things that are strange to us. If we aren't used to something, then we probably won't gravitate to it. I think that everybody has even a little xenophobia.

  19. I don't think xenophobia should be considered a real phobia, the people who do have it are the ones who do not like change or different people or things. but to be afraid of the unknown or of foreigners makes no sense to me. My card read "dont look at my face" and looking someone in the eye is part of everyday life, it is the same with dealing with the unknown or foreigners you will have to deal with it at some point so it would just be better to do it.

  20. Xenophobia is the fear of unknown or abstract things. I feel like the card game gave us a first hand look of what it would feel like. In my case, everybody had to agree with what I had to say so it wasn't necessarily a bad thing but in some peoples cases it would cause a feeling of embarrassment, humility or just feeling like an outcast.

  21. My definition of Xenophobia is the fear of change or of something new and unknown. The card activity made me think of this definition because we didn't know what card we had on our heads, and why people were acting different around you. It's probably like that in the stories. Something Alien would come to Earth and everyone would get scared of what would happen because it was unknown. This activity made a new identity for us. My card said "Argue with me!" Some one asked what my favorite color was, I said blue and they argued that it was a different color! Frustration would be one word that would go along with it because I was frustrated that someone was trying to influence me and change what I said. Also alienated because no one could agree with me and have a nice conversation about my favorite color, or something else.

  22. My definition of Xenophobia is a fear of something foreign or unknown that usually cannot be controlled, For example judgment, everyone judges but everyone has a fear of being judged, and it is something foreign that we cannot control whether it is good or bad. The card activity really backed up my premonition about how judgment makes people feel, When we went around, the people with cards could not control what it said or how other people reacted to it. So it made the situation uncomfortable because everyone was judging and being judged which is in the category of xenophobia which everyone is a little fearful of. The terms that I would think of are uncomfortable and anxious, yes there is the fear element but foreign things make us feel out of our element therefore we are much more awkward and uncomfortable. My quote “agree with me” was probably one of the least uncomfortable cards because it didn't make me feel that out of my element but I observed ones like”ignore me” and “don't look at my face” made situations awkward and it made the people quite anxious.

  23. Dictionary.com defines Xenophobia as “an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.” I personally agree. Xenophobia is also generally related to stereotyping and forms of prejudice such as racism and sexism. Another key aspect, I believe, with xenophobia is creating a sense of inferiority in other to make yourself more superior. I definitely felt that way about a card activity. If the card activity was a real life setting, I believe people would be acting that way to feel more superior about themselves. My card was “Laugh at what I say.” I found myself becoming more and more isolated because I couldn’t have a conversation with anyone without them laughing. And even after they laughed, they wouldn't address my inquiry into how their day is. If it was a real life situation, I would feel very self conscious and inferior. I would also feel that I was the trigger of someone else’s xenophobia.

  24. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of the unknown or foreign. The card activity made me think about the power of hatred, prejudice, and fear. My card was "Don't look at my face." It was quite frustrating and a little insulting trying to have a conversation with someone who wouldn't make eye contact with you. Some emotions I connect to xenophobia are loneliness, abandonment, and isolation if you are the thing that people fear. If you are among the masses then the emotions are disgust, suspicion and trepidation.

  25. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of things that aren't normal to you or the fear of being different. My card said Agree with me! This could represent that when people don't agree with you or what you like, you are seen as different and a lot of times are judged because of that difference. Everyone experiences this xenophobia at least once in their lives because everyone has to experience something that is out of their comfort zone.

  26. Xenophobia is the fear of foreign things. I noticed in the card activity people were awkward and seemed out of place because they were afraid of being labeled differently than who they are. They are not comfortable. My card said interrupt me, and it was really frustrating.I think everyone has xenophobia because nobody is used to everything.

  27. Xenophobia is the fear or hatred of foreign objects, people or places. It stems from unnecessary and uneducated bias or prejudice. The activity exemplified how humankind is so quick to make judgement based solely on appearance. Looks, skin tone, and speech are all ignite negative perception and have done so for years. "Accept my ideas", suggests that the card holder knows more than the reader and that they find themselves of an elevated status to their peers. Science fiction literature often glorifies our united hatred or fear of another race or species. The use of aliens in text may serve as the best example. Aliens are pictured as foreign invaders with minuscule social skills and little desire to serve the greater good on earth. Even so, the characters seldom take time to look beyond their appearance and research their origins or what they actually stand for.

  28. Xenophobia is the fear of outsiders or unknown ideas. The information that the cards gave us may have been untruthful or at least told us how to react to the person. My card told people to "Nod at me!" but nothing else but one idea. Xenophobes react based on what they know and are afraid of learning the unknown. By telling people one thing and nothing else may convince them to not learn anymore than what they know. In science fiction it could be the clash of societies, ideas, religion, government, and many other things. Like in Fahrenheit 451, the books changed peoples opinions and they were afraid and ran away from what they did not know.

  29. Xenophobia is the fear of foreign things that seem strange to us, such as aliens, or new places. I was absent when we did the card activity but I chose that maybe my card would have said "ignore me" and this may have related to xenophobia because people will tend to ignore or push things to the side if they are out of the ordinary and are not what we are used to. Xenophobia may make outsiders feel unwelcome and rejected. We are often afraid and not accepting of the unknown.
