Xenophobia In Science Fiction?

What is your definition of xenophobia, and how did the card activity make you think about your definition? What emotions can you assign or connect with the term and concept of xenophobia in Science Fiction?  Please use the quote from your card in your response.  This blog response is due during class on 9-19-11.

  1. Xenophobia to me means, the fear of strangers and foreigners. Our class activity did give you that sense of feeling if people treated you differently and you didn't like it, my card was 'Nod at me' it got annoying. That wasn't my first experience, I had to deal with people being different because of my hearing loss, eventually, I didn't like meeting new people, almost scared of them because they might treat me different because of my hearing loss. It's the same with Science Fiction cause if an Alien came to earth we all think the they are going to do experiments on us and do bad things, we're scared of them.

  2. Xenophobia is an unreasonable fear or hatred towards foreigners or strangers. The activity made me think of the definition because we had cards that said different things on our head like "ignore me" and "don't look at my face." This shows an example of xenophobia because people would read the cards and do whatever it said and in life, people do that to other people who have different color of skin, gender, and speak a different language then we do. We are always treating other people differently if they are not life us, like with the cards, we treated everyone differently depending on what it said on their card.

  3. To me xenophobia is the fear of humans, and especially foreign humans. I think that when we did the activity made me get interrupted and it made me not want to talk to people because they would interrupt me!

  4. Xenophobia is the fear of people. In science fiction, it might be the fear of strangers, like aliens. When we were doing the card activity, i got Accept My Ideas. Everyone was totally asking my opinion on everything, and then agreed with it. I was saying stuff like Homecoming was boring and it was only OK, and flash Gordon over there was totally agreeing with me. I was ignoring people and looking over their heads, or nodding or interrupting. Everyone just took it. They didn't tell me otherwise, and i was the center of attention. I felt bad for not looking at their face, and them all over what i had to say. I felt selfish.

  5. My definition of Xenophobia is the fear of foreigners or the fear of an outcast, something unusual and not used to being seen. When something unusual or out of the ordinary happens we notice it. Others notice it more some of us dont notice it at all. Xenophobia is a true thing and is a fear of foreign things.

  6. This activity made me think about how people get bullied everyday. People sometimes have the problems that were written on those cards. We kept on laughing at the people that had either nod at me, or don't look at my face, but sometimes we don't really think about how that really effects people. Xenophobia is the fear of humans and i think that ties together with us making fun of people just because of who they are. Science fiction can also go with it because people can write stories on make believe stuff, but still have a realistic meaning to it. Xenophobia can become peoples life if they let it. Overall i think that xenophobia can go with anything that is realistic and real to us.-Taylor S.

  7. Xenophobia to me shows have some people can be two faced and just give emotions instead of feelings. This also shows that when you don't know if something is wrong that no one will really tell you until you in fact figure out what is wrong for yourself. the card activity also showed that once you start to know someone hat once you see them again that you are more interseted to talk where as if you did not know that person you would be timid or shy to go up and talk to them!!!

  8. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of foreign things or people. The card activity applied to this because we all had sayings that kind of made us an outcast or foreign to the rest of the group. I think the feeling of being uncomfortable goes with xenophobia. My card said "Argue with me," I had a hard time figuring out what my card was because I didn't have very many conversations with people so it was hard for them to argue with me. When I did talk with someone I didn't notice them arguing with me. Some other cards said Nod at me and Ignore me, these were more obvious to tell what the card said.

  9. Xenophobia in my definition is the fear of foreign thing or person. The card activity made me think of the definition because I acted different than normal depending on the card. My emotions when people talked to me was the same as normal, but towards other people that had cards that requires something different made my feel guilt. My card was "Accept My Ideas!"

  10. i had "dont look at my face" which when people would start talking to me i thought they wanted to leave or get away cause they didn't make eye contact. This made me realize what xenophobia is all about. Its about a majority of people treating you differently so that you feel like a outcast. You also feel alone cause their are only a few other people like you.

  11. Xenophobia is the fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange. The card activity singled people out because of the way people reacted to each other. It seemed like people didn't want to converse with me they just wanted to laugh at what I said. This made me feel like an I was secretly the joke of everyone. I felt like I no longer fit in with society.

  12. My definition for xenophobia is the fear of foreign or abnormal people. My card said,"Don't look at my face," and I saw that after people saw my card, they tried not to look at me and have conversations with me. I think we have hidden cards in all of us, making people wary of us in different ways. This connects to xenophobia in that people who fear foreign people try to stay away from them, not look at them, not talk to them, disagree with them for no other reason except they are different. We see this all the time in the world around us. We don't like people who are different from us. -EliB.

  13. Xenophobia is the fear of what is foreign.
During the card activity, xenophobia was demonstrated as we did not know how to act around one another with the cards on our foreheads. It was as if everyone was a different person for a few minutes. Additionally, people were being treated differently than they normally would be, causing some confusion. For example, my card read "Interrupt me!" Before I realized what it said, I didn't understand why people wouldn't let me talk. The emotions connected with xenophobia include confusion, fear, panic, and a sense of insecurity.

xenophobia is a fear of foreign people or customs that they might bring. on my card it said to ask my opinion, and as the activity went on the more people asked. The card i have made me think about if i was not a native of a particular place. So people asked for it the more chance they had to call or pin me as a weird person or disagree with me. as an effect i felt like my opinion wouldnt mean anything.

  16. My definition of xenophobia is someone who is afraid of someone different or someone from another planet. The card activity made me think a little more about the definition. I could tell what my card was because nobody would talk to me and everyone would ignore me. This example defiantly explains xenophobia.

  17. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of foreign things and this activity makes me think about that definition because the game we played made us do things that are kind of foreign and embarrasing. My specific quote was "agree with me". Emotions that i can assign with this is being fearful or scared of foreign new things.

  18. to me, xenophobia is the fear of the unknown. of irrational, foreign things. the activity we did in class with the note cards alienated every individual in a unique way. we responded to everybody's note card with no justification behind it, thus, pulling out the xenophobia in all of us.

  19. Xenophobia is the fear of humans or not being accepted by them. My card said "laugh at what I say." It made me feel very uncomfortable because I did not know why people were laughing. I was very confused and it made it difficult to have conversations with people. I felt really bad for ignoring people, or not looking at their face, or interrupting them. It made me feel sad.

  20. Xenophobia is a person hates or ignores people that are different from them. The card activity showed me how such little things can lead to a person getting ignored. If a person had a card on their head and it told you to ignore them, people did; there were no questions asked. This demonstrates that in real life, people are social outcasts for being just a tiny bit different or there is a tiny roomer about them that isn't true. People should know that you can never believe roomers because most of the time they are false. I can connect this to science fiction because a long time ago, science fiction wasn't something you wrote about or maybe even thought of. Those who wrote science fiction and published probably became social outcasts because they developed a new genre which was different from others that they had at that point in time. Its just like what happens today, people are ignored just because they are different; just like those who developed science fiction.

Xenophobia- the fear of foreign or strange people. The card game today in class was a good example of xenophobia because people had to go out of their element and confront people in a foreign or strange way. For example some people had don't look at my face on their card so that person had to experience people who wouldn't look at them. Some emotions you can put with xenophobia may be awkward and nervous. It may be awkward because your doing something out of your comfort zone and it is just plain weird. You could be nervous because you are scared of confronting someone or something foreign.

  22. Xenophobia is the fear and hatred of strangers or foreigners or of anything that is strange or foreign. The card activity made me think about how people are socially shunned for minor unimportant things. Some emotions that I can assign to the term xenophobia are fear, hate, and frightened. The card that I received said "Ignore me!" and that made me upset because every time I went to talk to someone, they just ignored me. This was a fun experiment, that helped me to see how much we can judge, and treat people different than we should.

  23. Xenophopia is like the fear of foreign or new things. The card activity kind of demonstrated this since we had to kind of follow the cards on peoples head and some people felt like that there might be Xenophobia about them. i had Interrupt me and i didn't really get an opportunity to guess it because i was kind of oblivious i guess.I have seen a lot of what you might call Xenophobia around friends or seeing 2 new people meet.

  24. I think that xenophobia is when people do not accept other people, ideas, or objects that are foreign to them. My card said “Agree with me!” and when people agreed with everything I said, I felt like they were not paying attention to what I was saying because they kept agreeing with me. This slightly changed my definition of xenophobia because I generally associate xenophobia with being an outcast or ostracised, but when people were constantly agreeing with me I felt slightly overly accepted, to the point that I felt like an outcast. Overall, I associate xenophobia with feeling like an outcast, different, and unwanted. There are different ways to exhibit xenophobia, but the I think the feelings behind them are all the same.

  25. My definition of xenophobia is being unreasonably scared or hatred of foreigners or strangers. The card made me think of the definition because my card was to laugh at what I say. I thought that it was because of hatred because I could be a foreigner and have a weird accent when I talk. This concept can go with science fiction because when we think about inventions in the future people could laugh at the idea because it so far fetched.

  26. Xenophobia is an intense or irrational dislike or fear of peoples or a country. I describe it as a fear or dislike of the differences between people. My quote was "Every time I speak, start dancing." The card activity made me realize even small differences can change the way people treat you. It also showed how easy it is to feel like you are being treated differently. Even when people are not trying to be rude it is still easy to see the difference in the way they are treating you. In science fiction it seems that xenophobia will be used to assess new worlds and new knowledge that they found through extrapolation.

  27. My definition just means to me that you are scared of things that you are not used to seeing, hearing, smelling or feeling everyday. The card activity that we did made me really realize how bad high school is with that kind of stuff. People in high school can really outcast people for reasons like that. It's sad to really see how it is. I try to be the best person possible but I do know people that treat other like that and it is very hurtful to see. My card said "Take everything I say as a insult." I know that sometimes I take things to seriously and I realized today that things arn't always exactly what they mean.

  28. Xenophobia is the fear of anything foreign or strange. not just people though, you could be afraid of an objects that are foreign to you. With Xenophobia you are very weary of people from other countries/planets and anything that you've never experienced before. This appears in Science Fiction frequently, with aliens from other planets being poked and prodded, or aliens coming to explode our planet. People in science fiction are afraid of aliens because humans don't understand them and make judgements right away about the aliens. Even with some technology people are afraid of it because they don't know it and have never seen it before.

Xenophobia is a fear of foreign people from another country or from another planet. For example the United States fearing invasion from a different country a alien the extra terrestrial. For me the emotion mostly associated with xenophobia is sadness or depression. I think this because people getting avoided or mistreated just because they’re different. For example we did it a activity today that said thing’s like “ignore me” or “Laugh at what i say”. It’s crazy to thin but people are actually treated like that today

  30. Xenophobia is the fear of someone foreign or different from yourself. It can be inferred from this definition that xenophobia causes people to act erratically, because they act out of fear and misunderstanding. The classroom activity we participated in illustrated the potential detriments of xenophobia in a benign way. The card I had plastered on my forehead said: "interrupt me", this card made me very conscious of the volume and manner in which I spoke, because people continued to interrupt me. The activity made me empathize with those who are mistreated in this manner on a daily basis.

  31. Xenophobia is the fear of something different, or foreign. In the card activity there were people that we were not supposed to look at, and people who we were supposed to ignore. Most times in real life when people refuse to look at someone or won’t except someone it is because they are different. In the world today we don’t like different. Often when people are ignored or not looked at it can make them sad or angry. My card said “argue with me”, when I would try to talk to people all they would do is disagree and argue with me, it made me mad that no one would talk to me. We are very afrraid of things that are different.
