What is your definitionof xenophobia, and how did the card activity make you think about the definition? Please use the quote from your card in your response due 9-27-10.
My definition would be - being afraid as well as judgemental of the unknown. My card said "whats my opinion" and not knowing what it said was interesting and fun but at the same time I didn't know if I had something as crazy as the other people in class. So that activity made me think about how the unknown can be tied into the definition.
My definition of xenophobia would be fear of the unknown or ignorance. My card said "nod at me" so i started to understand what was going on pretty fast. The experiment exhibited xenophobia very well because it put everyone in a position where they were nervous or scared.
My definition of xenophobia is the fear toward foreigners. "Take everything I say as a personal insult." This was the saying that people read when they were talking to me. This showed xenophobia because throughout the experiment people got nervous and intimidted by the cards and were not quit sure if we should do what they say.
My card said, "Nod at Me". The definition of xenophobia in my opinion is to be afraid and ignorant of an unknown being. Only because you don't understand it or them. The cards activity helped me to understand this, because it showed what we would do when faced with an unknown thing and experience.
My definition of xenephobia is the fear of anything foreign or stranger. In other words the fear of the unknown. My card said "Inturrupt Me!" I quickly realized what my card said because somebody would start a conversation with me and then say random things while I was talking. This experiment put us in the situation of not knowing what other people were seeing. They knew something that we didnt and that made some of us uncomfortable.
My card said, "Nod at me." Sometimes people I struck up a conversation with would reply, while nodding, and I felt mostly comfortable with that, but when the awkward stares crowded in around me while heads bobbed up and down in my direction, I felt sort of fearful for myself; trying to address people and having them stare at me blankly and nodding was very uncomfortable.
My definition of xenophobia is the fear of anything unknown or different than the self or the self's personal community (household, family, close neighbors).
In my opinion, xenophobia is the fear of anything that is new and different. My card said, "Nod at Me", and I quickly figured out what my card said because no one would say anything to me, but just simply nod. Without the communication, it seemed like people were ignoring what I said and instead focusing on the task that was on my card. This is an excellent example of xenophobia because people are more focused on how foreign and alien someone or something is when discovering this foreign something, instead of actually discovering the purpose for this new being.
My defenition is: fear of being judged and/or rejected. My card said, "Laugh at everything I say" and the card activity made me think about the definition because while i had my card everything i said people would laugh at me. If this were to occur besides during this activity it would make me feel like they are judgeing me and laughing at me while they do it.
I did not participate in the card activity, but my definition of xenophobia is the hidden, or unrecognized fear of people and things that do not agree with your customs or beleifs.
"Laugh at what I say" My definition is being afraid or standoffish towards what one doesn't recognize. This could mean being afraid, criticizing, or simply ignoring the unknown. The card activity opened my eyes to this because it was very difficult having everybody laugh at me and not knowing why. While I was able to figure out mine relatively quickly, I could definitly sense some frustration by people who couldn't understand why others were reacting negatively towards them. It helped me understand how easily we all judge each other because of what we don't know...or what is unknown.
my definition is the fear of people(or lifeforms)from a foregin/different place than you. My card was "don't inturrupt me!" this, i relate to xenophobia by the lack of being able to, or rather, the want to even understand someone who comes from a different place than you.
My definition is the fear of other living things that are not familiar to you. My card said "laugh at what I say", maybe this could repressent how sometimes people will laugh at one persons joke, but if another person said the same joke then they wouldnt laugh because they dont like that person.
Xenophobia is the extreme fear of something that you are unfamiliar to you, things like people from foreign lands, ect. The card activity made me feel uncomfortable because whenever i talked people would make squinty eyes at me and cross their arms. "Cross your arms and squint your eyes whenever i talk."
Xenophobia's dictionary definition is: an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange. I believe the card I had said "Take everything I say as a personal insult." So after everyone acted like I was a terrible person. I think this was an excellent demonstration of xenophobia
I had the card that said, " do not look at my face." It presented awkward conversation barriers, and made things difficult. My definition of xenophobia would be a fear of strangers or unknown, foreign, or strange people and or cultures. Xenophobia isn't limited just to races and individuals. It can be the peoples' ways and cultures to that scare people.
Xenophobia is the fear of that which is strange or foreign to us. In the game i had the card that said "Ignore me" I figured out what was happening when even my close friends just turned around as soon as i approached. I was hard to do anything else other than approach a person and then move on when they turned around. "Ignore me" was the epitome of the xenophobia game because if you're afraid of someone you aren't going to want to strike up a conversation with them. you're going to pretend it doesn't exist as everyone did with me.
My deffinition of xenophobia is the fear of foreign and strange things and people. On my card it said, "Take everything I say as a personal insult". At first I was really confused because people just gave me weird looks and kinda walked away from me so I really had no idea what was on my card. This showed me how if you are different then other people they will reject you and then it would seem like you are xenophobic.
The definition of xenophobia is seen as the fear of other people foreign to ourselves. My card in class was hard for me to decipher because the other class mates and ignore me. when i read it "every think you say it taken as a personal offense". I later figured out and it connected for me because people were not around me and veered off in a different direction from me.
I believe that xenophobia is a state in which you are uncomfortable or the environment is strange or skewed in someway. My notecard read "agree with me" so after every sentence the answer of the person i was speaking to would be the same as mine when at least a little bit of an arguement is expected. Moving to a new place or starting a new job all could be ways of xenophelia. Just the environment and strange new order of things could overwhelm and possibly take over someone's life.
Xenophobia to me is when someone is scared and judgmental of an others culture. My card said to ask my opinion on something. This shows that someone could really ask you for something but have no care at all as to what the response is. Other cards said to ignore the person, this is a great example of xenophobia because you completely judge and avoid people you might of heard things about or possibly don't understand.
