Can Grandfathers Travel In Time?

Are the Grandfather Paradox and time travel essential elements within the Star Trek Episode: The City On The Edge Of Forever?  If so, why are what makes them essential?  How does this episode make you think about your Time Travel Artifact writing?  Reflect, contemplate, and respond by 2:30p.m. on Monday, November 16th.

  1. This episode exhibits the grandfather paradox through McCoy in that by changing the past, he altered it to a pojt where he never would have been born, therefore he never would have traveled back in time and altered the past, meaning he would have been born and would have altered the past, and so on and so forth.

  2. The Grandfather paradox becomes a large part of the premise of this show. As soon as McCoy jumped through the portal to the past, the Starship Enterprise ceased to exist because of something he did in the past. He altered something in the past that drastically changed the future. I don't understand this paradox, because I think of time as being a circle. Our present is only a point in the circle: there's already a future ahead of us and a past behind us. Because time moves in this circle, people from the future have already traveled to the present, but the present will still lead up to the same future because it was preset in the future that those people would return to the past. It's really hard to put into words.
For example, Spock and Kurk and McCoy going into the past shouldn't have any effect on the future, because those events already happened to lead up to the future that contained the Star Trek crew. By trying to change the events of the past, they end up happening exactly as they were supposed to, as if you hadn't interfered in the first place.

  3. Time travel is an obvious essential element to this episode, it is based entirely on traveling back into tim. And the Grandfather Paradox is incorporated in that they go back in to time to change the past so that they can change what happens in the future. This makes me think about the Time Travel Artifact assignment in that I think that if it were to really happen, it would have greater consequences or affects than we think.

  4. In this episode of Star Trek, time travel is very essential. It is basically what the whole episode is about. The grandfather paradox comes into play when they find that the "slum angel" has two different fates. Edith was saved, and all time had resumed to normal. The question is though, would she still have died because of the grandfather paradox? It is all really a strange concept. This episode makes me think of my time travel artifact writing because I went back in time with my story too.

  5. I think that time travel in general is very interesting because if people travel back in time like they do in "Star Trek" they could meet people and know exactly what is going to happen to them before it actually happens. Overall, I think it is a good thing because the time travelers could warn someone if they know that they are going to be sick or die anytime soon. They can't really change what is going to happen but they can try to prevent bad things because they already know the outcome. This is similar to my writing because of the fact that people are time traveling, but in my writing they go into the future instead of back into the past. I think it would be better to travel back into the past because you might have an idea of what is going on, but if you were to travel into the future everything would be different and you would probably be completely lost.

  6. The Star Trek episode entitled "The City on the Edge of Forever" relies on time travel as an essential element because the characters are exposed to a world less sophisticated than their own as a result of time travel. They are out of place in the society, and their new companion is able to detect this. They attempt to revreate technology similar to that of their own time, but they must rely on technology that is outdated to them. their companion, Edith, has two possible futures. The outcome of her future will detemine the outcome of the future of ther rest of the world. Her future may be altered by the presence of a man frm the future, another colleague of Kirk and Spock. This is an example of the Grandfather theory, showing that, by going back in time, the future can be completely altered.

  7. Kirk, Spock and McCoy all met the same woman. This woman is supposed to die. After they arrive, it is said that she is to live. Because she lived, world war 2 would have been won by the Germans and millions of people were to be killed. Kirk fell in love with the woman and did not want to kill her. In the end, McCoy restrained Kirk and the woman got hit by a car. They altered time, then changed it back. Time is relative and easily effected when time travel happens.

  8. Time travel is very essential in the star trek episode: The City on Edge Of Forever. Time travel is used almost to "fix" the past. Or in this case, ruin the past. For example, when one of the men used time travel to go back in time and land on planet earth, it changed the future drastically. And it is up to the other men to go back in time to change what has been changed, but could that change the future even more? This movie can connect to the story "A Sound of Thunder." In this story, if one thing was changed, for example, killing a small butterfly, it is said that the whole future can be changed. This episode can also relate to my time travel artifact writing because in each story, character's travel back in time, bringing something that is unfamiliar to the time they have traveled to.

  9. I believe that yes the grandfather effect was key for this episode because the entire premise of the plot is that by going back in time Lenard McCoy changed history. In regards to my own writing i liked the use of McCoys device and the non understanding that caused what i presume to be the death of a civilian in the 1930's, in my own work i know have to consider what dangers may come from devices that if not uunderstood could be dangerous if not fatal.

  10. The grandfather paradox and time travel is an essential element within the star trek episode because since the doctor went back in time and saved that girl, the whole history of the earth was changed. They needed to stop the doctor from saving the girl so that the past events on earth are as they were. This episode makes me think about my time travel artifact because I really need to take into consideration if and how this artifact would change earth's future.

  11. The men from the future come back in time to save themselves from the crazed doctor, but have they thought of the consequences of them being there, how it will change the future?

They knew that the doctor changed the hole future there is no guaranty that they wont change the future how will they keep from changing the future for the bad?

Will them going back in time change their future?

This makes me think if we end up being able to time travel how will it change things that have already happened. If you bring futuristic thing to the past would it be beneficial?

  12. the episode of star trec showed very well i think of time travel. it showed how one of the men that jumped through the time traveling machine and changed the past that affected the future. this episode is some what like my writing because the character in my story goes to the future and takes something back to the past and then returning back to the future was totally changed from the first time he travled.

  13. The star trek episode reminds me of our Time travel artifact writing. The fact that McCoy went back in time made Germany able to capture the world. Its just like if you were to go back in time and kill a fly; when you got back, the world would be different than before. One event changed the world completely in this star trek episode. Things that happen are meant to be and should not be tampered with. Any tampering of the past mostly results in disaster.

  14. I think that it is very essential because in that episode of star trek they go back in time so that the future wont be changed. Its the idea but just using different things. If they didn't save the girl time would be changed forever and Germany would take over the world.

  15. Within the Grandfather Paradox and the Star Trek Episode we saw in class, there is a common demonstration of misuse in time travel. Because both of them use time travel to try to change the future, by making one simple mistake they may ultimately change the world forever. It is a very dramatic and complicated subject, which can very easily make someone's or many peoples' lives different. In some ways it is a very interesting subject to try and grasp, but time travel is very fragile; if I were given the opportunity to go back in time, I may not take it because of the fear my life may change drastically. But if I could just bring back an artifact from the future without being noticed, I may just be given an advantage if no one else from the future sees me, nor finds out that I have a high technology objects.

  16. The "Grandfather Theory" of time travel relates to the "Star Trek" episode because if Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, or the doctor never went through the portal then they the owner of the homeless shelter would not have died in the car crash and then Germany would have taken over the world. It makes me think that in the time travel papers it would be hard to have a person come back in time. Also, what would have happened if they had taken the owner of the homeless shelter back with them instead of letting her die. Would that have changed history more?

the grandfather paradox always seems to be the dominant theme in shows, movies, or stories in which time travel is discussed. i think this essential to maintain the credibility and the logistics of time travel; it wouldn't make sense that someone going back or forward in time would not make a significant difference in the future. the star trek episode was interesting because of the fact that they also explored the possibility of alternate futures, even though the deciding factor between which one would occur. this makes the question of whether there are alternate realities happening simultaneously arises.

  19. In the Star Treck epesode: The city on the edge of forever, 3 men travel back in time to the 1930's in order to restore the way things were before the crews ship crashed. One main thing i've learned about time travel is that just one small accurace will change the entire way of things for the future. This links back to my story because in my story, i bring a flashlight back to the 1800's before any lightbulbs or electricity were invented. The fact that this common item in our world today has been brought back to the 1800's will completely chance the entire future. People would be shocked to see something so advanced that would help them in so many situations, considering they are used to only using candle light. In the star treck epesode, one specific persoon has to be killed only because it would restore the normal scheme of things. If this woman was to live, the future would change entirely and many more people who werent suppose to die would be killed.

  20. The grandfather paradox is essential because it is a specific way of time travel. It is essential because if they went back in time and changed one thing it could set off a chain reaction. All of time and history could be changed and they would never have gotten back to the Enterprise. If they did end up saving the girl all of history would have changed because she was someone with a bigger part in history.

  21. I believe these things are essential elements in this episode of Star Trek. Time travel is this most significant because it gave Captain Kurk the opportunity to run away from his problems, in this case being the loss of his lady. This reminds me of the artifact paper in the sense that in the episode, McCoy had no idea what was going because he was in the unknown. It relates because we have to write as if we went back in time and found an object that we are unsure about.

  22. Time travel and the Grandfather Paradox are obviously essential factors to this episode of Star Trek. As confusing as Rachel's explanation is, it makes good sense. Things seem to be already preset in the past, present and future. No matter what happens in the past, it has already been visited by the future which means the future exists exactly as it would have regardless of the past. The cirlce is also another great analogy because time does seem to move in a cyclical manner and so, no matter how many times it is travelled around, it will still be the same if the same point of the circle is reached.

After viewing this episode, it gives me a pretty good idea on how to make my Time Travel Artifact writing more accurate.

  23. The Grandfather Paradox and time travel are the essential elements in the Star Trek episode because the plot revolves around travelling back in time by going through a portal. When McCoy goes through the portal, he is taken back in time and it changed the existence of Earth. After watching part of this episode, I have realized how I can significantly improve my artifact writing.

  24. The Grandfather Paradox and time travel proved essential in the plot of this Star Trek episode, as the crew stumbled upon a means of time travel, and used the ideas behind the paradox to repair the damage that had been done. The two elements created an intriguing plot; the crew intervened with time, and the consequences meant that everything leading up to the point in which the crew discovered the time portal, would change. In order to “undo” the damage, the crew had to use time travel to prevent one event from changing the course of history on Earth. The Grandfather Paradox makes for an interesting element in this episode, because the idea that when one event changes in the past, everything after that point changes for better or for worse. If McCoy hadn’t traveled back in time and saved Edith, therefore changing all events after that point, the Grandfather Paradox wouldn’t have had been of any importance to the episode. The idea that McCoy’s saving Edith’s life changed the outcome of the future shows the manipulative power that comes with time travel. After viewing the episode, I thought about my time travel artifact writing and I considered what might happen to the future after removing an object from the past, and how one change in events would have altered everything after that point.
