Reading? Technology? Stories?

Based upon your recent reading of articles in Google Reader regarding science and technology, what connections or observations can you make about your read article(s) and the concepts and stories we have read or viewed? Please complete this blog response by 2:30p.m. on Monday, October 12th, 2009.

  1. I read one article in popular science that was about how a space ship just passed a power test to go to mars. The launch date will be soon. This connects to our extrapolation articles about deep space. We are becoming more and more inclined to go further into space each year. The extrapolating ideas of deep space travel are becoming more and more apparent.

  2. In my readings I have found a trend in the internet sparking up in politics, television, and other real-life happenings. Though this does not particularly relate to any of our readings it can be interpreted as the internet's fast and undeniable rise to be the dominating force in everything we deal with every day. As the internet continues to grow and expand it will make connections with more than we ever thought possible, and by making these connections we will be able to do a great deal more than imagined.

  3. There usually appears to be devices that make reality better than it is, or suppliment reality all together. In the extrapolation stories we read, there were machines or robots that cooked meals, or sidewalks that moved people. In science today, a big word is virtual reality. I read an article about simulation training for soldiers that put them in real combat situations. They were even tased by their virtual reality suit when shot by a virtual bullet. I guess there's some kind of fascination with having a world totally created by a human. It's a chance to play God - something we've tried to do forever.

  4. I read the aritcle, "Breeding Super-Hygeinic Bees to Take the Offensive in Colony Collapse Fight". The first sentence of this article says, "For almost two years, the honeybees that support almost all human agriculture have fought a plague right out of a sci-fi movie." This connects to the stories we have read because they are science fiction and supposedly this plague came from a sci-fi movie. I don't know if it really is from a movie, but there is a parasite that basically lives on the capped eggs in a beehive. The bees sweep their hives for this varroa mite (the parasite) to try and get rid of it and any infected bees, but tend to miss the actual mite. The Agricultural Research Service learned how to genetically engineer these bees so that the instinct they have for cleaning their hives is put into overdrive. I never would have thought you could actually genetically engineer a bee, or that there would be the need to do so. This article seems like it wouldn't be real, just like a lot of the stories we have read so far.

  5. My observations concerning certain articles and class stories helped me conclude similarities towards the future, and also extrapolation. I was able to overlook the NASA website, and analyze their information regarding the Earth's moon and sun. Seeing how far our technology has come in such a short amount of time, I further understood why extrapolation can be somewhat easy to express in Science Fiction stories. Also, the overall use in our internet has shown how the modern world is overtaken by the development of certain uses in technology.

  6. The google reader articles are just like the science fiction stories because the articles them self almost seem science fiction because it's incredible how much and how fast technology is advancing even without our knowing about it. In one of the articles it talked about how robots are becoming more and more advanced just like in the story "Sales Pitch" show how out of hand in can become with robots taking over everything.

  7. The articles we have read relate to the science fiction stories we have read in class. A majority of the articles advertise technology. A story that relates to that is "Sales Pitch" where technology is advertised to an extreme point. Some of the articles show new technology such as a "fold up laptop" that in my mind almost seemed "science fiction" because it was so advanced in technology.

  8. I found that many of the technology articles were about cars. and alot of the new technology that are being put into cars is already being used in space. one article i found was about a car that had solar panels and when the car was braking they were put up and used as an air brake like on planes. this is alot like alot of the technology in the stories we have read in class.

  9. I read an article from Discver Magazine about new developments in solar technology. The article shows the dependence that humans are forming on technology and hte drive we feel to improve what we currently have. This relates to the stories we've been reading, particualrly exptrapolation because as technology increases, the people who use it begin to need it more and more, creating a desire toimprove it. This is a cycle that the world has fallen into, and will likely continue until a time when technology is everything.

  10. While reading the articles on Google Reader, I noticed that a lot of the new advancements in technology today are things that have been mentioned in the text that we have read in class. For example I read one article that talked about how someday soon we may have robots in the house. That idea was adressed in the short story "Sales Pitch". Another connection I made was that the articles regarding advancements in technology tend to only look at the pros, while the short stories we've been reading mainly focus on the cons.

  11. I have noticed many similarities between the articles i read on Google Reader and the movies and texts we have viewed so far this semester. Anything dealing with space reminded me of star wars and star trek. There was alot of robots in both the articles and mainly the movie we watched.

  12. I read an article about advertisement and it reminded me of "Sales Pitch" because advertisement is starting to get way out of hand as time goes on. The amount of commercials on tv and on the radio is beginning to be ridiculous because a person can barely watch fifteen minutes of a show or listen to a couple songs without hearing multiple advertisements. I am curious to find out what the pop-ups and commercials will be like in ten or even twenty years?

  13. The articles in google reader that I read connected to a lot of the stories we have read in class. I found a couple articles about robots and how they have advanced so much. This connects to a couple stories we have read because the robots in those stories have a lot of room to advance, although they are a good look into what robots will be in the future.

  14. I read on popular science an article about the use of cammeras in great britian and the steps the british goverment has taken to make the cammeras more effective. The goverment is allowing citizens to view cammeras and attempt to catch crimes for a reward. This is an intresting idea by changing the charecter who would be big brother into the general public. I believe though this system seems good. acidents that are not fatal occur constantly and would start getting punilized and as the name implies these are accidents everyone makes them. Just to point out that in aiming for perfection we may lose being human.

  15. I read about a roll up computer. This will make travel easier. More room is available with this new product. It shows how extrapolation really happens. From an ordinary laptop to a roll up laptop. This is very futuristic and is a good invention.

  16. i read an article about scientists proposing that they place these high-tech blankets on the ice caps that would reflect the sunlight and prevent them from melting anymore than they have; it seems like most of the scientific advances that are being made are either to fix things that we've messed up by earlier scientific advances, or just to try and suck up more knowledge about things we don't understand, rather than delving deeper into things we know now.

  17. I was looking at some stellar pictures from outer space and it reminded me of sales pitch. Not the part about the adds but how cool it would be to commute through space everyday. And what a shame it was that adds blocked that amazing scenery and beauty in the dark outer space skies.

  18. I read this article about how a Best Buy let an artist showcase his work through the use of the HD television sets which are on sale. So not only will you get people buying these amazing supertubes for the use of counting all the hair follicles on a favorite actor's head but also a new group of people can see that they can use these TVs for their own high-def artwork. This is a positive use of technology or maybe it has that Philip K. Dick sensibility to it. I am not sure and have already slacked off on this blog post enough, I am sorry fellow classmates and Mr. Trotter. Forgive me if you can see it in your heart.

  19. a lot of the articles that i read on google reader were advertisments about the future. this reminded me of the story of sales pitch because in the story it advertised a lot of new stuff that was coming out.

  20. A few of the articles that i read were regarding advertising and how technology can get advertising messages around faster and more efficiently. Immediatly this reminded me of sales pitch and how far technology will take advertising. How far is too far?

  21. One article I read, "Fighting for the Right to Clone", was about the controversy behind the cloning human body parts from human tissue samples. The idea is to clone the body parts or organs of an individual, and if a transplant is ever needed, a clone of the needed body part will have been grown from that individual's tissue samples, and it will most likely not be rejected when transplanted into their body. I thought that the ideas presented in this article were like many ideas that came up in "Post-mortem People", because in the story, the bodies of recently deceased people are "harvested" for organs that can be transplanted into the bodies of those who need it. Both the article and the story are similar in subject matter; however, the ideas behind the subject differ greatly. The article was more about finding ways to successfully transplant organs and body parts, whereas the story is about finding as many useable organs as possible and going to any length in order to obtain them.
