What Is Your Definition Of Science Fiction?

Robert A. Heinlein, author and critic:

Science fiction is "realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method" (quoted by Knight in Bishop, Nebula Awards 25, 3).

Theodore Sturgeon, author:

"'A good science-fiction story is a story about human beings, with a human problem, and a human solution, which would not have happened at all without its science content'" (as quoted in "Atheling, More Issues", 12).

George Hay:

"Science fiction is what you find on the shelves in the library marked science fiction."

  1. Robert A. Heinlein's definition of science fiction fits most nearly to mine. I believe that science fiction describes a hypothetical future which often involves dystopian elements of a society. In this future, science has been progressed or manipulated to create large-scale change to an entire community.

  2. The first Quote aligns with my definition of science fiction. I liked the first one because it's the definition that was the most helpful and it was interesting and made me want to learn more.

  3. The quote from Heinlein is how I view science fiction. People don't know what to come in the future so science fiction might not be that hard to fathom in some cases. I feel like people enjoy science fiction because it allows them to think more about what the future could hold. Science fiction can be but doesn't always have to be far fetched. People are always thinking about future technology and what limits people will hit on technology.

  4. Science Fiction is Problems or conflicts we all experienced or will Experience in the future. It's also the crazy ideas that will make our technology better in the future. In Star Wars the conflicts are similar to the American revolution when the Rebels fight the dark side for universe freedom. Like how the 13 colonies fought britain for there independence.

  5. "'A good science-fiction story is a story about human beings, with a human problem, and a human solution, which would not have happened at all without its science content'"

This quote best fits my own definition of Science Fiction. I feel like without Humans the story would be no good, It would be either too hard to connect or unrealistic. I believe that the way that a story must be created is also with a problem and a purpose or end goal. The science content is the best part, It helps to create more emotion and more depth to the issues that the heroes face. The science content brings action and adventure that no other genre could bring. To me, that is what science fiction means.

  6. I don’t think I find any of them very close to my opinion butHeinlein is the closest. I believe that science fiction is an extension of reality. I had a great explanation but it wouldn’t post.

  7. The quote by Robert A. Heinlein best aliens with my definition of science fiction. Many of the most famous science fiction movies have to deal with the future. For example Back to the Future where they use a time machine to go back in and forward in time. These movies also take today's science and speculate on future technologies we can gain from this science, like greater space travel, or time machines.

  8. My definition of Science Fiction is the possibilities of the future and the outcomes. Science fiction has endless possibilities and endless results. I think Robert A. Heinlein’s definition of science fiction aligns with my definition the best. Every book I have read on science fiction, always has real possibilities of happening.
