Xenophobia And Alien Planets?

As you viewed the Alien Planet Projects created by your peers, what did you notice?  How do these projects help us delve into the concept of xenophobia?  Please comment, share, argue, and critique the trends or ideas that you noticed.  Please complete this blog response by Tuesday, Oct. 15th at 3:40p.m.

  1. I noticed that each project is diffrent I didnt see one that was exaclty the same. Which made it interesting. Some of the wild life and the locations or names were the same, but a lot about the planets themselves were very different from each other. This project helps us dive into xenophobia becuase it shows things beign different, different places, different animals, different people etc...

  2. The alien planets I observed were quite interesting and diverse. One display I really enjoyed featured a document explaining the planet, its story, and the people/creatures living on the planet. What really stuck out to me was use of a styrofoam globe that was color coded to demonstrate where each race lived. I was surprised by the abundance of plant life on the planets. Some planets had humanoid creatures, while some were more unique. I greatly enjoyed seeing people's ideas!

  3. I noticed that everyone was really creative with the creation of life forms. I noticed how some would make the weirdest and most unusual life form they could think of. This ties back to Xenophobia because it shows how everyone has different opinions on things that are different then them.

  4. Only looking at a few we all have different ideas of what xenophobia is. Xenophobia is perceived differently to everyone.

  5. As I viewed my peers projects all with themes of xenophobia I noticed a lot of similarities and some differences. The xenophobia in the projects usually was a fear of outsiders or foreigners, and not too different from immigration controversy that has been a hot topic since the beginning of civilization. These topics help us see xenophobia from a birds eye view, which is something that it is hard for both sides of the immigration debate to be able to do, to see the whole picture and not just our side of the debate.

  6. I noticed that many of the planets were very similar to earth, in properties. Due to this, the concept of xenophobia cannot be explored to its fullest due to the similarities between earth and these new planets. I also noticed many people using ideas from pop culture in their planets. This also aids in dulling the effects of xenophobia due to the ideas already being commonplace

  7. A big trend I noticed was that many of the inhabitants of the planet seemed to be very fictional beings that are viewed as scary. I think this comes from the idea that we do not know what is out in space and its scary. Many of the worlds also seemed to contrast from ours very much because we are used to, familiarized, comfortable with it, and not with the newer different things(many tend to be dangerous).

  8. Some of the alien planet projects were very interesting, some with no forms of intelligent life in the slightest and is in turn put into danger from humans possibly disrupting their extremely fragile ecosystem. Those with intelligent life forms explored how these sentient being could either be benevolent and welcoming or aggressive and dangerous and what kinds of conflict would be brought by humans interacting with these creatures.

  9. I noticed that most of these projects were very in depth and interesting. I can see how xenophobia was used from the way that some of the creatures were made. Most of the creatures were made to be scary and unpleasant. I thought this was an interesting detail. Overall I liked all the projects and I thought they were good.

  10. I noticed that a lot of people did planets that were similar to Earth in climate and societies. They help us delve into the concept of xenophobia in that we as a human race have trouble thinking of things that are different than us. We have trouble thinking of beings that need different things to live or act differently than we do. I really like the ideas people had for aliens, and how different the various planets looked in terms of geography. -Logan lewis

  11. The first thing I noticed when observing completed alien planets was the abundance of vowels in names. Many planet or creature names had a much higher vowel to consonant ratio than the average English word. It's difficult to aspire for complete scientific accuracy in a project spanning a week or two, and this was definitely reflected in our projects. I saw many examples of people underestimating the impact that small changes would make. For example, a two degree difference in Earth's axial tilt would have drastic consequences in many different aspects. It seems to me, creating other life forms in our imagination is difficult for humans, since all of the life forms I saw were combinations, variations, or mutations of well-known Earth organisms. This is something I have seen widespread in science fiction.

  12. When I was looking at the Alien Planet Projects around the classroom I noticed that almost no creature was the same or really similar which shows how different people can perceive what an Alien Planet could look like if it was found. It also could show how Xenophobia could be different for everybody because everybody has their own version of what they fear in the unknown, of what could lurk in the vast outreaches of space and time, and it could range from insanely dangerous creatures to super intelligent lifeforms.

  13. As I walked around the class and looked at other life forms and planets. These projects help us understand what xenophobia in the class environment looks like. Some people created nice creatures who live peacefully and others could have created killing machines. This gives us an insight as to what people may depict different species as and as to what they view the outside world as. Although not any peoples projects seemed to have a lot of xenophobia in it. It helped us realize what we see as gross and disgusting that may seem completely normal and ordinary to another race, species or person in general.

  14. While looking at others presentations I learned that we all have very unique ideas about what they think an alien planet could look like. I liked others creations of alien animals and life forms on their planet.

  15. I noticed that people compared their planets to Earth. I enjoyed people that made their own species, instead of grabbing picture from google. I also noticed that the species would either act like past present or future humans. Meaning that they would be in war, politics, peaceful, world ending, or even beginning of the species. This helps understand xenophobia because it shows how different parts of the world acts differently.

  16. I noticed how each project had some lifeforms similar to Earth's or to humans and some very different from anything we've experienced. These projects help is go deeper into the concept of xenophobia because they let us create our own situations that we or other people are xenophobic about. I enjoyed seeing other people's creations and looking at how their planets worked with interaction between creatures and their environment.

  17. I noticed many different names that sound and looked weird. The planets that I saw had many different features and creatures along with it. There were different structures and features on them as well. Each detail is what made their planets unique and interesting.

  18. Some of the planets have simularites to earth like one that is nothing but desert and salt water. Others are completely different. The lifeforms do seem different in terms of having human traits

  19. I noticed a few constants, actually, between all of these different projects. Many of them included new alien species that were far more advanced than humans are. Some wore clothes similar to humans, others had more advanced weapons and other technology. These projects showed the concept of xenophobia somewhat subtly but still noticeable.

  20. When I was looking at the projects I noticed that everyone was very different but similar in fashion that still makes them unique. All of them seemed to have a scary creature and all of them had two pretty cool organisms that were symbiotic. But some of them game me some huge xenophobia for them, I would not like to see a huge wasp fly up to me and wish for peace.

  21. While all the planets and organisms varied greatly, xenophobia was certainly displayed through the similarity to Earthen creatures and quantitative specifics found in many projects. Many of the life-forms were extremely similar to plants or animals here on earth, showing how we are xenophobic towards new concepts.Quite a few projects also gave very specific temperatures, coordinates, and sizes, showing a need for order and our human tendency to classify things. However, several projects did display new, creative concepts, with environments and organisms quite different than those we see on Earth.
