"Ordinances And E.T.?"

After reading Denver Ordinance Article and Denver Ordinance 300, did you think of any Science Fiction short story or class connections? If you can incorporate quotations, reflect, challenge, or discern with keen insight, please do so in your blog response due Wednesday, April 5th.

  1. The article talked about keeping aliens secret till they get the full support of the community but with xenophobia people will always be naturally scared of aliens. It can't be publicly funded due to the fact that there will be people against it who will not pay for an alien foundation.

  2. I thought of Puppet Show and Muse because aliens were present in both, and humans react differently to both of them

  3. I think that this kind of connects to the theme in science fiction of humans and aliens getting along because in this ordinance the people just want to greet the alien.

  4. After reading the articles I found a connection with the short story "Puppets" because the story revolves around how people from earth reacted when discovering extraterrestrials. in the story they acted very peaceful to the aliens, but in real life I'm sure earth would act hostile to the aliens. Because mankind is controlled by Xenophobia.

  5. After reading the two articles I think that some of our stories and films that we have watched in class connect to these. Such as in the X-Files film that we watched the "monster" could have been considered an extraterrestrial and the FBI had set out to figure it out. This ordinance would have had professionals out for the extraterrestrials in our world too.

  6. 15% of the Denver population really want alien insurance.

  7. it connects with xenophobia because people would be afraid of actually contacting something. Also that people will not want to pay for something that is not likely to ever happen or that they are afraid of

  8. After reading the Article and The Denver Ordinance 300, I see a connection with the film we watched in X Files because it had to do with extraterrestrials and people are afraid of them. They don't want to be put in danger.

  9. I thought the Puppet Master sort of connected to this. If the alien that first arrived on the planet in puppet master had a committee or place to discuss matters with them, it would've gone a lot smoother. I think this is a good idea because a lot of people have xenophobia. The first thing they'd do is probably shoot the alien or call the cops. If there was someone educating everyone, they'd probably be a lot more welcoming. Not everyone would accept this "club" and as we saw, it was greatly denied.

  10. After reading these articles, which talked about protecting alien secrets from society, I thought of X-files. The agents were trying to protect the Monster from those who felt hatred toward him without even knowing who he is.

  11. After reading the articles, I didn't really connect what I had just read to anything we had gone over in class. However, I was reminded of the movie Independence Day. In this movie, there is a group of people that get together to greet the aliens that invade earth. I think that having a UFO greeting facility in Denver would be a pretty weird thing to have, so I am not surprised that the bill didn't pass.

  12. I Thought about the one story with the children when they met the aliens and they thought that our was dumb and uncaring which caused them to then I assume destroy/take over the planet and if this was put in place if some extraterrestrials we could have a proper meeting

  13. This really ties into the aspect of xenophobia. While the ordinance doesn't directly mention the fear of extraterrestrial beings but it does say that we should be prepared.

  14. Xenophobia makes people naturally scared of the unknown so they have to be exposed first to be comfortable and no one will just agree to that any time soon

  15. Looking through, I was a few connections to our short story's, Most the connections all relate to Xenophobia, the fear of the unknown makes a appearance here. But the Story "Puppets" make the most relation to this real world situation.

  16. I think these articles can connect to both xenophobia and the Frankenstein Complex, because some people are opposed to acknowledging the existence of aliens. This reminds me of the Maple Street Twilight Zone episode that we watched in class.

  17. Xenophobia brings up the unknown but I believe that aliens are already on this earth and the government is just covering it up. Also, I feel like we aren't ready to know if there are aliens.

  18. after reading these few articles about extraterrestrial life forms in science fiction, its made me think about the way humans might react to encountering other life. what I believe will happen is that humans will become frightened, believe the extraterrestrial life is a threat, and decide to kill it off. yet when I read these articles, I am glad to see that some sort of a group is trying to come together and plan ideas incase there comes a time where we do incounter life forms. reading these articles made me reminded of Iron giant where the army begins to turn on the giant because they think he is a dangerous robot. It also reminded me of the Puppet Show where they a large blue man shows up by donkey into the little group meeting, and the people around are interested in his culture.

  19. This article reminded me of Random sample in the way that the only welcome committee in the story was two violent children whose actions resulted in the end of the world. This ordinance is obviously trying to avoid something like that by having us learn from the mistakes of history and the mistakes in stories so we can prepare to avoid future conflicts. It also shows the fear of the unknown through the article's insistence that we shouldn't be doing 'this sort of thing' in the public eye.

  20. This article had some similarities to random sample because both pieces of writing display the fear of the unknown. In the article it expresses deeply that it's frowned upon for humans to do this in public. In Random Sample the kids reacted to the aliens in a negative way in a result of not being familiar with the aliens.

  21. I think two things are interesting. One, that this came to a vote at all. Two, that the portion voted for it that did. It was higher than I expected. We all fear that our first contact will go badly, it's a common trope. (Random sample, Independence day, etc) I think there should be a team of people tasked with making first contact, but it shouldn't be at the state or national level. I think we as a globe should put forth a first contact task force, and fill it with people who can make the best possible first contact.

That aside, I understand the backlash. It's not worth the money to fund, especially in the state we're in.

I think the risk is too great to not look into it, at least. I don't know about you, but I don't want to face down global extinction.

  22. I thought of the story when the puppet show because it shows that there is a possibility of life out in the universe and we need a team of people who are able to talk to him and be as tho extraterrestrial ambassadors.

  23. The puppuet show would be a perfect examplke for this its like the aliens are taking control of humans and asking questions through them.
