  1. Xenophobia is a fear of aliens, a fear of the unknown and what we don't understand. The activity made trying to understand something you knew nothing about really hard. "Agree with me, then disagree with me in the same sentence"

  2. Xenophobia is a fear of something we do not know or is foreign to us. The activity with the cards actually made me try to understand something that I did not know what it was. This related to people that are scared of foreigners because they don't understand there ways. The activity was fun and made me think more about how to treat other people and animals.

  3. Xenophobia is the fear if the unknown and what may be out in space. The card activity made everyone follow what the card said to do, and I didn't know what my card was until I talked with someone. My card was "Don't look at my face", and that is very annoying because looking at someone helps people pay attention, and when they don't do that I feel ignored. I think fear, caution, and nervousness are a part of having xenophobia.

  4. Xenophobia is when you're not very accepting of an out of the ordinary idea. In science fiction movies and books many people in the world outside of a certain person or a small group are not accepting of what they haven't seen before. In Frankenstein the villagers thought the monster was so ugly and they were terrified of his looks and abilities they would throw rocks at him and chase after him and hurt him. "Laugh at everything I say" was my card and I believe when people are in awkward situations sometimes the only reaction they can have is to laugh, like if someone is dressed over the top people may laugh at them because they're dressed in a ridiculous way compared to most people.

  6. Xenophobia is just a fear of the unknown and it's something that we just don't know. My card was "Ignore me" and it's weird when you say hi to everyone but the just go away so it forces you to think about what your card says.

  7. Fear of the unknown.
Fear of how people are treating me and how I am treating people, and that we are just as guilty when we stand there and let bad things happen to others is the same as committing it
"Interrupt me" is something I actually hate when people do, but because I was having too much fun with this little "game" I didn't realize people were interrupting me or "shushing" me

  8. It was isolating. I knew right away what my card was, but it still sucked. Honestly, it was eye opening. It was hard to connect with others when they seemed to be actively avoiding me. It was also hard to honor some of the cards (interrupt me, argue with me, etc) because that's not something I do. It was an interesting experience, and it gives me new perspective on the idea of xenophobia. Feeling the effect first hand was rough. Evil flourishes when good men do nothing, and we (as people) should be more responsible in our treatment of others.

  9. Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown and foreign. The card activity made me think about how people in one group will generally act the same way to people in a different group. I think loneliness is an emotion I can assign to this. My card was to "Start dancing every time I speak"

  10. My card said, "Don't look at my face". The definition of xenophobia is a fear of foreigners or something that is strange. The card activity represented kind of how we were all seen as foreigners. I think some common emotions would probably be sadness, fear, loneliness, and anger.

  11. Xenophobia is the fear of things that are different. This card activity was kind of confusing and I realized the meaning afterward. People have preconceived notion about you that they base their actions on. The only reason we make those assumptions is because they are different and weather we like it or not it makes us afraid in some strange way.

  12. Xenophobia is the fear of something/someone foreign or unknown. The activity made me realize the lengths one has to go to in order to ignore or treat someone differently based on a characteristic and made me wonder why people put so much effort into being ignorant. My card was, "Agree with me, then disagree with me in the same sentence" which was a bit hard to pick up on but made sense once I looked at my card.

  13. The card activity made me think about how us humans label people. We treat others how we and others label them no matter if we haven't even met them. Like Aliens. We haven't even discovered an Alien and so many people are so afraid of them mostly because of what films portray them as. We think of Aliens taking over our planet and killing people when we actually have no idea what they are like. It's mostly the people who make films that scare people and create this label for the unknown to be frightening.

  14. Xenophobia is a fear of foreign things and also it can be a fear of be different. The activity was a great way at showing this because every time I would talk to someone they would tap their feet and i felt kinda uncomfortable. When I'm uncomfortable that really freaks me out because I feel like I've done something wrong. So in my opinion the definition of xenophobia is to fear being different or the fear of foreign things having an impact or pretty much anything unknown.

  15. My definition of xenophobia is having a fear of of an unknown beings or a fear of the unknown. The activity tried to make us feel the idea having having an unknown.

  16. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of strangers or people who don't belong. My card said "Nod at me!" I felt super awkward because people were just nodding at me and I couldn't understand why they keep staring at me and nodding. I know some cards said don't look at my face. That probably made those people feel more shunned because people wouldn't even look at them. We treated those people like foreigners and we couldn't even look at their faces. For me, nodding at me could mean you aren't even listening and you don't care about what I'm saying. The "idea" behind the activity was the show how people can feel like outsiders based on a label.

  17. My definition of xenophobia is a fear of things that we don't know. The card activity made me think of my definition because as Mr. Trotter was explaining the activity we were nervous of what it might turn out to be. Also, because as we saw others card we were scared to follow the directions on the card. Fear and anxiety really connect to to the concept of xenophobia for me because when humans learn or see something new, that is the most common reaction. My card was "Interrupt me" and I was able to figure out what it was very quickly, but until then it was definitely something different.

  18. My definition of Xenophobia would be the fear of the unknown. The card game didn't exactly demonstrate this but it did demonstrate how people will be treated differently even if they are the same or something is "off". Xenophobia has a lot to contribute to science fiction. With humans having to deal with the unknown time-and-time again.

  19. My definition of xenophobia is fearing or hating something that isn't normal. This idea occurs every day in the world because it's a natural reaction. In stories like ET or Transformers, the majority is against the abnormal object or thing because they believe it will change what they know. My card was for people to act like everything i said was an insult, this idea matches with xenophobia because whatever i said was what people feared and hated. My thoughts were that abnormal idea in the group that the majority wouldn't like because no one else does.

    1. Xenophobias definition is feeling or being afraid of other kind such as alien, or just our own species with different race, religion, or place. this card activity helped show how we might disregard people with different cards then us, and how we might feel uncomfortable or afraid of meeting another with a weird card or different card.

  21. My card said "argue with me". Xenophobia is a fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers. When I became the victim of xenophobia I felt like everything I said was wrong and everyone didn't like me. I never want to experience that again and nor should anyone else.

I think xenophobia is fear of aliens or the fear of something different. The card activity made me think about how preexisting labels can contribute to this. For someone who had an 'Interrupt me' card, the world was an impatient and uncaring place. This is the same in Science Fiction, where people who don't fit with the societal norm or the projected ideal of the time become outsiders. And having labels that denote behavior before even meeting someone can only make things worse. Just like the 'Interrupt me' card made people talk over other's voices and caused tension in what should have been an everyday conversation, real life labels can carry a stigma that causes people to approach new people and situations with a closed mind. This is also true for Science Fiction, where the character's fear of aliens or the unknown can cause destructive or harmful behavior because of their prior bias.

  23. sometimes we knowing things we don't want to, scare us. sometimes we don't want to know.

  24. My card said 'Don't look at my face!" and that is one of my biggest pet peeves because then you don't know if that person is even listening or even cares. So the card activity used xenophobia by making people uncomfortable and diving into peoples weaknesses.

  25. My definition of Xenophobia is having a fear of something that you haven't experienced or is unknown. My card was "Every time I speak, start dancing", so the card activity at first made me nervous, because I didn't know what was on my card. But once I started talking to people and seeing their reactions made me realize that it was a good thing, so the nervousness went away.

  26. Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown; the fear of living beings that come from somewhere different and/or unknown. The card activity made me think about my definition of Xenophobia and the effects it can have on society. The activity showed how when someone is treated differently or unfairly, it doesn't benefit anyone in the situation. If someone is Xenophobic, it can make the other person feel bad about themselves because they may think something is wrong with them. My card was, "Agree with me, then disagree with me in the same sentence." When people did this, I was confused to say the least. I can't imagine something deliberate like this happening to me in real life just because I cam from somewhere different or unknown. That is why I feel like Xenophobia can be a bad thing.

  27. My definition of Xenophobia is the fear of experiencing ambiguous things & not knowing what to expect. My card said "interrupt me" and it annoyed me because i wasn't sure what was happening. I didn't mind what the actual card said, but it made me nervous being labeled and everyone only noticing me for my label. This connects to science fiction by some people labeling the idea of it as negative things. The emotions xenophobia makes me think of is fear and vulnerability.

  28. My definition of Xenophbho is the fear of the unknown, being out of the loop, not fully understanding of what's going on. My card during this class activity "don't look me in the face" something that made me thing that people didn't look at me like a equal, it was confusing when I didn't realize what the card was. When I knew it made much more sense. I still felt that fear of not knowing the entire activity.

  29. My definition of Xenophobia is the fear of an unknown. It could be the entire world fearing something that is unknown, or just one person fearing an something that is unknown to them.

  30. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of people or things that you are not familiar with or don’t know anything about. The card activity made me think that even if they have a quality that is not good that it doesn’t mean that they are a bad person. My card was take everything I say as a personal insult. This is like of someone just walked up to you and you didn’t know them but they took everything you said as an insult you would not know what to do and would just walk away.

  31. Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown or of something uncommon. I thought xenophobia was just the fear of aliens but through the card game I discovered it's fear of approaching something you yourself aren't comfortable with. It's something you aren't expecting.
