Xenophobia In Science Fiction?

What is your definition of xenophobia, and how did the card activity make you think about your definition? What emotions can you assign or connect with the term and concept of xenophobia in Science Fiction? Please use the quote from your card in your response. 1. I think xenophobia is the fear of people or ideas that we do not know. When people see other new people that they don't know they get afraid. Few examples of xenophobia: Red Scare, Holocaust, The Civil Liberties act of 1942, segregation, Donald Trump and his immigration opinions and idea of building a wall. All of these examples portray some sort of fear, fear of what we do not know about.

  2. The card that I received was for the person to agree with me, then disagree with me. I was so lost and confused. My definition of xenophobia is, to be afraid or judge a group or individual based on a bias. A sci-fi example of this would come from Star Trek Into Darkness where the character Khan believes that humans are beneath him because he is 'better'. It is yet another example of how human fears have been exposed through the medium of sci-fi.

  3. In this activity, we demonstrated some of the outcomes and effects of xenophobia through cards that everyone could see but ourselves, telling others to act a certain way. This was not a direct example of xenophobia, but rather showed some of its 'symptoms', or ways it can be enacted towards someone. Disagreeing with people's ideas, ignoring them or laughing at what they said gave interesting examples of what a theoretically xenophobic person's behavior might entail.

  4. To me Xenophobia is the fear of foreign or new things. The card activity was a great example of Xenophobia because at one point or another people were ignoring each other. I had the card that said "Don't look at my face", and I felt like I had a pretty good feel for people who are ignored by the majority on the daily basis.

  5. The definition of xenophobia is being scared or afraid of a foreign concept, idea, or person. The card activity made me think about my definition by forcing me to see how different people react towards the things people say or do. For example, my card said "tap every time I start talking", and it was hard to catch. It truly demonstrates how people can take things in extremes sometimes. In science fiction, xenophobia can bring out such emotions as fear, hate, aggression and distrust.

  6. My first card said "argue with me." Everything I said wasn't good enough for anyone I was talking to. I would simply try and start a conversation and people would stare at me and ask, "why are you asking me these questions?" It made me feel like no one cared about my opinion and no one cared about my feelings. I knew that it was just my card telling them to do that but I couldn't help but feel helpless and weak. I think this is how outcasts feel. Humans search for others to accept them. This is why Xenophobia is so powerful and expressive.

  7. Xenophobia is the fear of any group of things/people that are different from what is known/normal.
The cards related to this in the way that everyone reacted to my card the way it suggested them to. That sort of put a label on me as to how people are supposed to interact with me. Societal norms can do the same to groups of people and how they have to interact with others. Stereotypes have a big roll in this, and it can be awkward for people whose only understanding of others is what stereotypes have taught them, just like it was really awkward to interact with certain people based in what they had on their card.

  8. Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown or what is different from us. There are strong emotions on both sides when dealing with this concept. The subject of the xenophobia could be experiencing loneliness or a strong feeling of not being accepted without truly understanding why. I felt this holding the card that said "don't look at my face". I felt ignored and couldn't understand why no one was acknowledging me. There can be more violent forms of xenophobia that cause bigger problems between the groups. One group is scared of the other and resorts to a form of attacking the other group. I felt this in a way while holding the card that said "take everything I say as an insult". Every time I tried to talk to someone they would get offended and quickly end the conversation. I think the victims of the xenophobia suffer also from not understanding the reasoning behind it. They don't always get an explanation before being ignored or attacked.

  9. Xenophobia is almost completely centered and focused around segregation and the destruction of what we believe to be different and the ideas we chose not to accept. The card that I had watched "laugh at what I say" and "take waht I say as a personal insult". These cards were difficult to work with, as they seemed so polar opposite from each other. When I ran into a girl with an "argue with me card", we both were caught up in a confusion an unprovoked argument. The way these cards and this exercise mimic the real world is uncanny. We often run into those with different believe and ideas from our own, and when we can't overcome them, we hit a brick wall and must retrace our steps before moving forward.

  10. My definition of Xenophobia is the fear of something or someone that is different, and the activity with the cards made me think of this definition because I wasn't sure what I was going to get and because I got,"dance at them," or something like that only a few people did it so it was like why are they all not doing it?

  11. Xenophobia is the fear of someone or something that is different or foreign. The card activity showed me how people might feel when they are different. One of my cards said, "Laugh at everything I say", so everything I said, someone was laughing. It showed me how people feel when a bias is placed on them and they are looked on as something strange and unwanted by society. This is a perfect idea for science fiction because it shows how people react when they encounter aliens or any other foreign entity, and causes them to demonstrate sides to themselves they didn't know they had.

  12. Xenophobia is the fear of the different. Almost like being unique is a bad thing.
Xenophobia is fear of other people from other places.

The Card Activity- Interrupted me- This card showed me that it was hard to get a word off and I quickly understood what it was. The emotion I would definitely connect to that card was annoyance I could start a conversation but not end it or move on with it, it was to me what I think a muted person might feel like, not being able to talk. With the concept of xenophobia I get the emotions fear and anxiety. I idea that you are interacting with the unknown.

  13. My definition of xenophobia is the idea of hatred or the following of one’s hatred towards another person who has different qualities or personalities. The card activity made me think of this definition because of all the stuff I had to do when I read the card or when somebody read my car. Then after that person read my card, another person would read it and do the exact same thing. We were playing the role of followers and the card was the leader. One of my cards said “Tap your foot while I speak” and even though I didn’t see anyone tap their feet, they kinda knew what to do. They started tapping their feet when I spoke. It made it look like they were impatient with me or something. There was another card I read which said “Interrupt me” and when I saw that card, I started throwing out random sounds or saying random things when they started talking.

  14. My definition of xenophobia is a fear of the unknown/unfamiliar (specifically of foreign people). The card activity felt like a small scale social experiment where how you were treated was entirely based on a card, like in real life how what people think about a person might be based on where they are from or their background. I had dance whenever I say something which was strange but not bad or exclusive, while some people had don't look at my face or argue with me. Some science fiction I could connect activity to is Stargate SG1 or Star Trek, in both shows they interact with new societies regularly and are sometimes treated as social outcasts.

  15. Xenophobia is the fear of someone who is different or strange to you. Xenophobia could also be connected to the feeling of loneliness and indifference. When I got my card I felt nervous about what card I would get. Maybe i would get a personal one like act like he smells, or act like he is annoying you. I did like the one someone had. It read" Act like whatever they say personally offends you." They were so confused, and were so uncomfortable they walked away. MY cards were "cross your arms and squint when they talk," and "Don't look at my face". The first one was hard, because people only had one arm, and the interactions were very confusing, it was funny to see the confused faces. Xenophobia can seem like a regular old phobia, but really, it makes people paranoid, I have never liked being paranoid, so to be paranoid ALL the time, I wouldn't be able to live with it.

  16. Xenophobia is defined as the fear of someone or something because of they are foreign or strange. The card activity made me think about my definition more because I wouldn't know whether I got a card saying I smell or one saying don't look at me. During the activity, I received the card that said "take everything I say as an insult". Everyone's response had me really confused, but made it easy to guess which card I had. Xenophobia in science fiction can connect with the terms "fear" and "different". This can be seen in the sci-fi movie, Planet of the Apes.

  17. My definition of xenophobia is the fear or hatred of something or someone different or foreign. The card activity made me think of different people from different countries and how they act. It also made me think of the typical stereotypes. For example there was a male student who had “accept my ideas!” on his card and back in the old days women had to accept men’s ideas against their will. The emotions of fear and curiosity. The person who bares the card is scared of what it says yet curious at the same time because of the way his or her peers are acting. In some stories there are societies driven by fear and curiosity to those who are different. Planet of the Apes for example, the apes drive fear into the hearts of humans to make them afraid and therefore are the master rulers of that world.

  18. The card that I received was "accept my ideas". It felt weird to have everybody be so open to what I was saying it was kind of un normal. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of accepting foreign people or ideas that are unfamiliar to you. It was definitely an interesting experiment and it showed me a real life scenario where xenophobia can exist.

  20. I was absent on Monday, but after seeing what the cards said and looking through the prezi on xenophobia I feel that I have a good understanding of what it means. My definition of xenophobia would be the fear of the different of unknown, looking at what the card activity is I saw my definition in play because it made people step out of their comfort zone and experience something different which can be scary. In science fiction xenophobia is used all the time to give the audience that kinda of horror or uncomfortable feeling that they search for in science fiction.

  21. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of someone or something strange and foreign to themselves. I was absent the day that we did the activity with the cards but an example is "Ignore me" and I would feel like if I just wanted to talk to someone and they ignored me, it would make me feel sad and confused. We are all the same species and when they give no reason to ignore you, it makes you feel crummy. People with xenophobia;their emotions would be scared and confused. They encounter something they are not use to seeing and knowing and they freak out. So they either kill or run.

  22. Although I was not here during the card activity on Monday due to my absence, I learned that this activity displayed xenophobia. I define xenophobia as a strong or intense dislike of someone or something foreign of themselves. I don't find this as a positive fear, because it can often hurt the other people or person you dislike. This experiment was very interesting because it made a real life example of this fear, and I learned more about how others treat people with certain labels and stereotypes put forth on them. To conclude, that activity taught me xenophobia easier than sitting in class listening to a lecture. It gave a current and more interactive way to understand how this fear will play a role in the upcoming unit.

  23. Xenophobia is the fear of things or ideas that are alien. The activity helped me understand the emotions that are related to being targeted as different. Someone who is xenophobic might feel scared at what they do not understand.

  24. Xenophobia is the fear of new thing or ideas that are foreign to you. The activity that we did in class made me understand the feelings we have when we are labeled as different. An example of xenophobia would be when Superman began to help people with his powers. Even tho he looked like a human and had good intentions. Others who didn't understand him and his intentions, feared what they didn't know.
