Extrapolation And Future Schools In 2054?

Now that you have read many of your peers' Future School Extrapolation Projects, what are you thinking? Holistically, what are your reasonable extrapolations regarding all of the extrapolations you have read? What potential changes excite you the most? What potential changes fill you with angst and apprehension? Other thoughts?

  1. I think a lot of people's ideas were really cool and very creative. Some were a little far fetched and some were very realistic. One girl had a simple but brilliant idea of having increased security. Many schools have barely any security at all. I also liked that a lot of people incorporated advances in technology into there ideas of the future. Many things are changing and the world is going to have to change with it.

  2. The thoughts of schools changing so much is reasonable, but still so strange to me, I can't really imagine much that reasonably should be changed. I do, however, like the ideas of more hands on learning, I think that is very exciting and sounds very fun. I really don't enjoy the idea of having our teachers be robotic. It sounds terrifying to have a piece of emotionless electronics take over our schools.

  3. I think the school will look very relaxed and flexible. The school program will be set up to accommodate each child for what they want to work as a job. I think the best feature about future school will be the technology by the students side being able to help and work along side with each child. I feel like with as much technology as there will be in the classroom I think it the social aspect will be bad because students will no longer feel the need to talk to their peers as much as they do in 2014.

The trend that I saw was the use of metal detectors and x-rays to prevent dangerous situations at the schools which i think would be a good idea.I also expected the teacher to be gone in most of them but they were still there in most of the slides I saw. There was also a lot of flying in the transportation aspect with school buses and other means of transportation as well.

  5. The most reasonable extrapolation I saw was that students will have more career oriented learning from a younger age. This could be very beneficial because people will be specialized in one category, but this could also be viewed as a negative because it minimizes the ability to create and discover beyond a certain limit. Although I am extremely excited for what technology has to offer, it upsets me that an increase in technology typically means a decrease in human interaction. Why must we interact with peers and teachers when we have digital screens and programs that can fulfill almost the same objectives? Its rather sad to see the decrease in teamwork and teacher to student relationship because bonds between two people cannot be replaced by a simple monitor. I think the most beneficial parts of technology will be to make learning more accessible. Already with search engines, students do not have to go to a library to look up information in a giant encyclopedia. With information at our fingertips, we do have the potential to be much more innovative than we already are. It is just important to keep in mind the prevalence of human relationships.

  6. Regarding the future schools, it seems to me that there are many different ideas that could adapt into the school. I personally believe teachers will stay, and it seems like most people had some idea of a teacher being part of schools as well. The trend that will not stop is technology advancing and having a place in the school system. Although it is important to keep writing as a utility, it is equally as important to understand the technology we will be using, as it will become a day to day part of our lives. The other major concept that seemed to reappear was group work. Lots of students are into the idea of group work, and that doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me, either.

  7. All change excites me, but what worries me is where it takes us. For example technology was supposed to help us and make your lives easier. Technology has made people lazier and less social while helping us. I think change is a good thing, but sometimes the pros don't outweigh the cons.

  8. i saw a lot of different structural changes in the building itself and in the curriculum. Many of the projects including mine had different ideas for the way that curriculum should be changed. There was also a lot of new technology. Some of the other projects also said something about choosing your career path and classes would be tailored to your best fit. I believe that this is a great idea.

  9. I think with the common trend of metal detectors and frequent screenings for the safety of the students and faculty, we might expect to see those in the future. I also believe that learning will become more individualized, and the learning curriculum will become more rigorous - students will be put on a career path early. Standardized testing will also become more individualized.

    I think the idea of being put on a career path so early in one's academic career is what unnerves me the most; it just doesn't seem like a good idea. When one is young, they say they want to be a doctor or a vet or a fireman, but when they're older, new subjects may appeal to them and they may all but laugh at the fact they ever thought they wanted to pursue a certain career.

    If students are expected to make such a life altering decision at a young age, I can foresee an increasing rate of dropouts due to second thoughts, anxiety and stress.

    However, I think the individualized testing would be something to look forward to as it tests *your* intelligence as an individual and where *you* are academically, not how intelligent you *should* be and where you *should* be academically.

  10. The future schools have shown many extrapolations, the one that interested me the most was the idea of a super healthy lunch for the students. I like this extrapolation because I believe people are getting to over weight and if we could address the problem at a younger age maybe we could help the childhood obesity. A potential change that excites me is the idea of a safer school even if it is a hassle I believe safety in school is key. The future is looking brighter and cooler everyday and I would love to see all the extrapolations people had thought about but I didn't and I will have to see in the future.

  11. I noticed that a lot of people had trends about security increases. I found this to be interesting that people thought about this, which could very well be due to recent events. But I found that interesting because I would not have thought about that at first. I also noticed that a lot of people had the idea of you choosing your “career path” from your eighth grade year. They found it important that high school be changed to prep you for your career that way everything you would learn would be apply in your everyday life. I found that interesting because a lot of people complain and are always asking the question of “when am I ever going to use this in my life.” They managed to eliminate that problem. Not as many people got rid of the teachers in the future like I would have imagined. Most people didn’t even mention them however. But those who did mention them said that they got more personal with the students, which was really interesting.

  12. After seeing all the potential ideas for the future of our schools, one thing that I noticed is that it is all very futuristic. Some of the ideas are realistic but for the most part they are similar to that of Ralph 124C 41+, where the ideas and innovations are too futuristic for our time. It is hard to say what school will look like in 5 years let alone 50. With all the recent events happening in schools, it is hard to say what the future holds in terms of security. I am interested to see how these turn of events will affect the future of our schools.

I'm thinking that school in 2054 would be so cool to go to because based on what I saw it looks like everyone is thinking that there will be so much technology to do school work and homework on. I like the fact that school would only be 1 hour long and the teachers would be robots and would know everything that you need to know. So you would get the education that you need in order to succeed in the job that you are wanting. I wish I could see schools in 2054.

  14. One of the biggest patterns I noticed while viewing other students projects were the safety requirements. Some people talked about increasing personal while others spoke of cameras and metal detectors. In addition to my own project, I noticed a few others who had the idea of hands on learning with the new technology. One student leaned towards not traveling places but through technology being submitted into the situations students are learning about. For example, the Revolutionary War. A pattern that I surprisingly didn’t see every much of was getting rid of teachers. There was only one project I read that talked about not having real life teachers but instead of using either robots or just computers. This is a common idea in the real world now a days.

  15. I think the added learning possibilities fascinating. Like how if you have a different way of learning that you get assigned to a certain class where that type of learning is taught. I still think that teachers need to be kept around in schools. One of the ideas that I thought was not as good was that you needed to go through a x-ray scanner to get in to school. I believe that you shouldn't fell like your sending your future kids to a prison instead of a school. Finally the addition of newer technology can increase your learning ability.

  16. The potentials that excite me most would be the ability for the learning to be adaptable to each person. That the grade wouldn't be only based on what the person turned in, but also their personality learning behaviors. Schools being placed out into water causes me a little bit of anxiety because of the dangers and how many people wouldn't be able to get to school. There are plenty of ideas that my classmates have that are very accessible, some may be a little far fetched. The ideas of schools being mostly based on technology is a little bit confusing for me. What if the information we are given through the screens we read are conformist and cause a communistic idea only more acceptable because of how it is taught? There will be plenty against the technological aspect, but only further generations will know.

  17. I found it interesting that many students had made the classroom a teacher free zone. Technology was incorporated to such an extent that there was very little need for a teacher. Some of the ideas required a completely online experience which I thought was an odd approach, if school is to be entirely based upon advancing technologies and the internet, why even have a physical building? I am most excited about the potential that some other students saw in decreasing the length of the school day and tailoring education to individual students to do so. One project proposed that all students take a test to determine their learning profile and then use the techniques that are most effective for that type of student. Some of the subject matter of school was altered beyond the typical math, science, English and History to direct students toward subjects that would be more helpful for the changing career fields.

  18. As I was reading different classmates view on school in the year 2054, and a lot of changes are bound to happen by then. There's a lot of new rules as I had read and seen in others. Such as longer days and longer breaks between classes. No teachers teaching the class rather online classes take the role of the teacher. Transportation was another key role in the role of school in the future. The idea of the “Magic School bus” may come to life where transportation to and from schools is a lot faster and could indeed be transported miles and miles and miles away from home. The biggest excitement to me is the food. What we love to eat will be more convenient for us all as we dont have to drive or walk far for lunch during the day, we would have what we love in a matter of seconds.

  19. Within the projects I viewed, there seemed to be a common thread. Technological advances, but were't we supposed to have flying cars and rocket shoes by 2014? What if the only technological advances we make are regarding phones? Sure we have smart phones that have more data capacity than Apollo 13 and all we do is throw birds at pigs. But what if the technological advances are so vast that we can't control them? What if we go all Matrix and machines and computers rule our very existence? They're already ruling our lives, we are so dependent on these little computers. We can't peel our faces away for a simple conversation.
    There were a lot of suggestions for touch screens in desks and such. We can make that happen in a mere four to five years. In fifty years, any thing could happen.

  20. The proposed ideas I saw today where all very valid and definitely a possibility in the future. Somewhere more realistic than others, and then some ideas I read made absolutely no sense. One proposal took kids out of school and had them "facetime" there teacher for their lecture I believe this would be incredibly difficult to try to pay attention to so many different screens. Seeing some peoples ideas made me want to add some things and change some things on my future school.

  21. There were a few noted trends that a lot of people seemed to follow. The first trend was that students were expected to mature faster than they are now. This was shown in a couple different ways. Mostly, students were expected to pick out a career from the time that they were in high school and start training for that career almost immediately. In some cases, people extrapolated that students would just be automatically more mature because they were taught in a more mature environment and treated more like adults.
    As I expected, a second trend that was noted was the use of more technology. Many people predicted that schools would depend a lot more on technology. In some cases, the school campus was completely erased in return for a completely technology run school. In these cases, students wouldn’t even have to leave their houses because all their school work would be online.
    At the same time, some people thought that students would be taught in a purely social environment because the world would have a more social need in the future. The people who extrapolated this, tended to keep the basic schooling system along the same lines as it is now.

  22. I think that everyone in the class had really good ideas and everyones were original and you could tell people put a good amount of effort into their work. But what really caught my eye was that most of my classmates had classroom environments without teachers. I don't think that would be a good thing unless you have some sort of robot there that has an answer to every possible question.

  25. I was very impressed with the creativity and rationality of my peers ideas. although some were more practical then others. I believed the integration of computer systems in the students desk is a good way to help some students learn and also would improve the environment eliminating pencils and paper. On the other hand some ideas such as eliminating the teacher from the class room wasent the greatest of ideas. Some of These innovations we conceived are very likely to find its way to a class room near you
