  1. (Agree with me) my defintion is fear of the unknown. because you are fearing what the card says and how people react to what it says, so you are feearing what you do not know.

  2. I feel that xenophobia is the fear of things that contrast what you know about the world based on your society or culture. During the activity, I was given the "Take everything I say as an insult" card. This made it difficult to converse with people but is something that is relevant to the world. If you go to a foreign country like Afghanistan, and do something the way you are taught, like offering to shake hands with your right hand, then you can accidentally insult the person you are talking to.

  3. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of something foreign, unknown, or strange. The card activity did not really make me think about the the definition because my card said "Agree with me!" so nobody was technically afraid of it. On the other hand, other peoples cards like "Don't look at my face" or "ignore me" could kind of relate to xenophobia because people don't want to talk to that person making them feel like they are unwanted.

  4. Google defines xenophobia as the irrational fear of someone or something foreign. The card activity was weird, and some people didn't want to participate because it was too strange. My card said "Take everything I say as a personal insult" and people got really into it. I figured it out almost immediately, and even talked with someone that had the same card as me. We were both very offended by everything the other person said. I can see this idea appearing in a lot of science fiction stories, especially something like a stranger comes to town and nobody knows who they are or what they want. It's been a long time since I saw the movie, and I never read the book, but I want to say that a good example of xenophobia is Something Wicked This Way Comes.

  5. Xenophobia is fearing foreign people of objects. It can also be referred to the fear of the unknown. The activity with the card was interesting. Everyone acted upon each others cards and not knowing what your card said was annoying. Everyone kept "Agreeing with me, then disagreeing with me in the same sentence." I found that odd until I was told to look at my card and I saw what it said.

  6. My card was: "Every time I speak, start dancing" and this activity made me reflect on xenophobia because someone might fear dancing in front of someone that they don't know, or just dancing in general. Xenophobia I think, is something that everyone has experienced at least once in their lives. I know when I was a freshman, I was afraid of all the big seniors, and I thought Arapahoe was such a big school; but now as I have spent the last four years at this school, now I am the big senior, and the school is so small.

  7. My definition of xenophobia is fear of people or things from foreign or unknown lands. "Cross your arms and squint your eyes when I speak." The card activity made me think about how we fear things that we don't know, specially when it pertains to ourselves. We are afraid of how people view us, or how people act around us. Emotions I connect with the concept of xenophobia is the fear of new things or feeling uncertain about things I'm not comfortable with.

  8. Xenophobia is the fear of strangers or foreigners. The card activity shows how xenophobia works in a way. We were almost fearful of ourselves and the card, and what was on that card. It also lead to questioning as to how people view us when we're directly labeled like that. The activity made me think more about fearing the unknown though, rather than just fearing strangers or foreigners however.

  9. My definition of Xenophobia is that it is the fear of the unknown. My Card was "Laugh at what I say". This activity connected to Xenophobia as everyone was curious as to what their card said, but no one knew exactly what it said, and it was emberassing, you could go as far as to say some were fearful of what their card said. It is that fear of the unknown again, no one knew what the cards said, it could have been anything, it became a fearful thing to find out.

  10. My definition of xenophobia is that not being used to something that is strange to you or something that you aren't used to. When people were walking around with the cards you had to do things that you were really used to doing when talking to someone, or you thought was too strange for you. Mine was "Every time I speak, start dancing" this was strange to do because it's not normally something people do when they talk to you or you talk to them the card activity was showing aways that xenophobia can happen even if it is just little strange things we aren't used to doing.

  11. Xenophobia is the fear of anything unknown. The card activity was an example because we were all kind of being quiet towards the beginning but as we started to realize what our card was we were a little more into the activity. In the beginning of the card activity I was wondering why everyone was asking my opinion on things and towards the end I found out my card said Ask my opinion.

  12. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of the unknown. The card activity reinforced this, as most people were apprehensive about doing the activity. Mine in particular said "Nod at me!". Fear is largely prevalent in Science Fiction, especially anything involving space. Man looks into the abyss, the infinite emptiness of space, and he cannot help but be afraid, even if it is just his imagination filling the void.

  13. My definition of xenophobia is fear of the unknown. The card idea made me kind of realize what it is like to not know something that everybody else does. In this case, it wasn't so much fear as it was curiosity. My card said "Accept my ideas"

  14. To me xenophobia is when there is intense irrational dislike fear of people from other countries. fear of anything that is strange or foreign and able to predict the future in another way. My card was "nod at me" and it made me think that if people had xenophobia they might just nod at me instead of getting into a full conversation with me. in science fiction your always predicting the future of whats to come and its ideal pl,ace to expaned your imagination.

  15. My definition of xenophobia was fear or hatred for foreign or strange things, however for the card activity my card read, "Accept my ideas!" which is the opposite of my definition. It felt pretty good to have random people come up to me and tell me that my ideas were good and valid, especially when I hadn't said anything to them yet. However, I think that accepting others ideas will be something our characters may struggle with in this unit.

  16. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of strangers or the unknown. The card I had was "Don't look at my face!" It made me feel unwanted and like I was a monster. When I thought of xenophobia I always thought of monsters or something scary, but I thought of it from the person who was scared, not the person who was treated like a monster. This activity made me think differently on the concept of xenophobia.

  17. The fear of the unknown or foreign things. I had the card "Tap your foot while I'm speaking." It was very odd to figure out what was going on at first. This can relate to xenophobia because some people didn't know what to do at first.

  18. xenophobia is a fear of strange/unknown things. Xenophobia is a 2 way street, for example everyone else was treating me strangely .because my card read " don't look at my face!" which caused me to look /treat them strangely. So now i can empathize with people or things on the other side of xenophobia.

  19. Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown or of change. When we did the activity I felt awkward when everyone was interrupting me so i also began to treat them differently. It was strange not knowing why people were doing what they were doing. And that is exactly what xenophobia is.

  20. My definition of xenophobia is fear of foreigners, strange out of place people, and possibly the unknown. My card was "Argue with me!" and when I was talking and starting conversations I felt like the comments I was making were rejected because I was saying something wrong. This made me feel out of place in the conversation and felt out of place in general. Personally I felt as if the people around me treated me as a foreigner and judged me based on the card on my forehead.

  21. When I hear the word xenophobia, I automatically associate it with fear of the unknown, which includes foreign people or locations. My card, which said, "Take everything I say as a personal insult," can be related to xenophobia because humans fear unknown species, such as aliens. With initial exposure to a foreign species, or even just new people, we can come across as ignorant and rude simply because we don't really know what to say. Alta's interaction with the spacemen in Forbidden Planet, is a great example of this concept because she became easily offended when a new idea was presented to her. While speaking to others and receiving their reactions to my comments, I was able to see how important it is to take other people's beliefs and feelings into consideration before speaking my mind.

  22. My definition of Xenophobia was the fear of things not known to one's own knowlegde. It also could be the fear of the idea, "you don't know what you don't know" which brings it to a different level. Although I didn't acually participate in the card activity, the card I was chosen to consider was, "argue with me". I can imagine that if everyone I talked to argued with me, I would become frustrated, confused, and a little anxious. Its a scary situation when you have a knowledge that there is something that everyone knows that you do. Thats what Xenophobia means.

  23. The fear of the unknown is what I got out of the card activity. mine was ignore me. when seeing people look at me then just turn and walk away it made me feel uneasy inside. made me wonder if I actually did smell or something horrid. But the meaning of xenophobia hits closer to me then before doing this activity. the fear of not knowing is something everyone posses. Even if they don't want to admit it.
