Ordinances And E.T.?

After reading Denver Ordinance 300, did you think of any Science Fiction short story or class connections? If you can incorporate quotations, reflect, challenge, or discern with keen insight, please do so in your blog post due today.

  1. After reading the Denver ordinance, I really felt like that it connected to the short story, Puppet Master. I felt after reading it that it would have been a worthwhile cause because it would have cost nothing from the government and would have been funded by grants and donations. It also would not be called upon until there was extraterrestial contact. It reminded me of the bartender in Puppet Master because he was there really the mediator in the situation which is what I feel that this commission would do.

  2. I think that the bill that was written was a waste of peoples time. There has been no physical evidence that aliens exist, therefore making an actual law on if they do come to Colorado is silly. I personally would not have voted to pass this bill, I feel like is a bunch of bologna.

  3. I think that this short story/ article does relate to the short stories that we've read in class because the whole story line of each story we've read in class deals with what the article talks about, "Extraterrestrial affairs". the only difference in the article and the stories is that in the stories, it seems like the world and the population knows about the alien type concepts where as in the article, the government keeps the alien affairs secret from the rest of the world and from the rest of the population.

  4. The ordnance reminded me of Random Sample because that story dealt with the government taking two kids in for questioning about their contact with aliens. I think that the idea was a waste of money because there is no proof of there being extraterrestrials on earth. When they have proof then the idea will be reasonable and more effective.

  5. When i read about this it immediately connected to an array of science fiction stories because science fiction is mainly based of aliens and extra-territorials and UFOS. This doesn't connect. This can also connect to the story of Sales pitch, because this plays with the idea of Robots and Space ships.

  6. The first short story I thought of after reading about the Denver Ordinance was the story about the aliens coming to the town of Cherrybell. The idea of creating a commission to disclose all of the information about extraterrestrials to the public could go either way. On one hand, there could be intelligent life outside of our planet that we haven't been told about. But on the other hand, it could just be a complete waste of money and there could be no extraterrestrials.

  7. I believe that , even though I am not a big alien fan we should still make some sort of an attempt of communication with any form of extra terrestrial life. What is the harm of doing so anyways, its not dumb thing to do and others may even follow you by doing the same.

  8. Denver Ordinance 300, would prepare our city if any aliens came here. In the Puppet Show the City in Arizona wasn't prepared for alien contact. However, This is a science fiction story and we live in a very real world, so this bill would be obsolete.

  9. If so many people must have signed the petition to make this votable, there must be a large public opinion that either acknowledges extra terrestrials, or is in favor of preparing for the possibility of their existence. I don't think that it would be wrong to prepare for the possibility of aliens, but I think that such a project would devote valuable resources to a circumstance which has a low probability of occurring. If I could have voted on this commission, I would have voted against it, but I do find it interesting that such a commission made it to the voting stage.

  10. The story that I immediately connected with the article, was The Silk and the Song. I think that the purpose of the Ordinance, is to prevent something like xenophobia/racism/anal-cranium-insertion disorder from happening against the aliens. I don't think that it should be decided now, but I do think that it should be debated in the next fifty years. In a lot of the stories that we have read, people have been scared or even angry towards aliens, simply because they're alien. I think that we should definatly have something like this, but just not now...

  11. I think this idea can connect with Puppet Show because both deal with direct communication with the aliens. In that story, some people were probably intrigued with talking to aliens, while others were very scared, which is probably how our nation would feel about this. I think this could be a cool thing to try and do, but it definitely isn't something our country should focus on, right now especially.

  12. The one story that I connected it to was puppet show and how they had a bunch of military to see if the Aliens are friendly and they are having meetings with them. I think that this is weird and it's good that it didn't pass.

  13. After reading the article Denver Ordinance 300 I see how this connected perfectly with science fiction. to vote for the amendment you have to believe in aliens and life on other planets. Science fiction is believing in aliens and robot having feelings. This article connects with EPICAC because the robot ended up having feelings with a human.

  14. When I read this I thought of Puppet Show-the idea of intelligent life on other planets coming to Earth. I think it would be completely insane if we actually implemented this law however. I disagree with it, there is not enough validity.

  15. I think it connects to Puppet Show, showing that it doesnt cost the government money, and could just be a worthy cause for those who enjoy that kind of stuff. If you don't think it should be done, than don't be apart of it, you don't pay taxes it, so don't let it bother you.

  16. This issue greatly concerns me, but I'm not surprised. I know that the government does withhold a lot of information from the American public. Sometimes it's for a very good reason, but in this case, I feel that we have a right to know about this. I don't know what would cause the government to keep knowledge from us, but I doubt that it's for a decent cause.

  17. I think that this is a strange thing to put on a ballot because I feel that the government would do something to stop this because they have been trying to hide their encounters with aliens.

  18. I think that the Denver Ordinance 300 connects to the story "Puppet Show" very closely. In "Puppet Show", extra terrestrials come to a small town called, Cherrybell, in Arizona. At the beginning of the story all the humans wanted to do was find out about more lifeforms outside of earth. As the story went on, the humans became concerned on weather they were the master race or not. I believe that's what would happen with the Denver Ordinance 300. If the ordinance did happen to find a new life form, and it was more intelligent that us humans on earth, and they would get threatened. They would try to become the master race.

  19. I feel like it is worthwhile to create this commission. It would provide a plan if Extraterrestrial life ever actually came to Colorado. It seems like in the stories people are more aware of what is happening with aliens while in real life they are simply dismissed as a farce or stories. In "Puppet Show" the town of Cherrybell is visited by aliens and had no knowledge of what they were and what to do. A committee like this could have changed the outcome.

  20. After read the Denver ordinance, I couldn't really connect it to any of the short stories. All of the stories we read didn't really have one about protect or preparing people for alien info.(a/n I support the ordinance).

  21. If people had proof that there was life on other planets, this bill would be reasonable, and I would have voted yes. But since we have no proof, it does not seem very effective to pass the law and wait to see what happens. I do think that it would make aliens feel more welcome, yet i think more research needs to be done on if these life forms do really exist or not. Also, it seems like this goes against the idea of xenophobia. It seems like the government has no fear of the unknown, because they are attempting to welcome things that they have no knowledge on.

  22. This Ordinance is not a very well written Ordinance, it keeps going in circles and does not provide any real hard facts. Yet some of the sections in this Ordinance are very interesting connections with stories we have read in this class. The most obvious story would be the Puppet Master, both the Ordinance and the Puppet Master have to do with Extraterrestrial contact and the dealing with Extraterrestrials. A good connection in both stories is a strive for"cultural awareness of Denver residents and visitors", not Denver, but a cultural awareness was extremely important in the story. The commission would set up the ability of any citizen to be able to contact an alien like the bartender did in the story.

  23. The Ordinance seems like the short story the Puppet Master and how its important to create a team of experts to deal with extraterrestrials and if they do interact with us then have a team to meet and greet the aliens as friendly as possible learn more about them and make sure they are no threat to us and try to advance ourselves into the future with their assistance. The people in the Puppet Master seemed to be trained in the story to deal with something like this.
