Ordinances And E.T.?

After reading Denver Ordinance 300, did you think of any short story or class connections? If you can incorporate quotations, reflect, challenge, or discern with keen insight, please do so in your blog post due today.

  1. After reading the Ordinance, it made me think of The X-Files clip that we watched in class. That idea of people wanting to know what has been "haunting" them so much that they start to blame whoever the crowd goes against.

  2. After reading the Denver Ordinance 300, I made a connection with our class discussions. As a class we have talked about how people will react to foreign creatures coming into a society and this ballot tries to make sure, if aliens did invade, that everyone would be safe. The ballot said "to help ensure the health, safety, and cultural affairs of Denver".

  3. The ordinance about people in Denver trying to get a petition for the UFO reminded me of "The Silk and The Song" because the Star Tower was described as a UFO in the story so it made me think about that. Then if the UFO was the only thing that could save us like in The Silk and The song it would be fortunate to try and have...

  4. This ballot reminds me of the xenophobia unit as a whole, connecting to the interaction with foreigners. The implication that we even need this is that "normal" humans aren't able to handle interaction with extraterrestrials and cannot be trusted. Instead, a specialized group of people is sent to handle interstellar affairs.

  5. This is dealing with Xenophobia and people taking initiative to understand what is happening, I feel like it is some absurd creation of peoples minds that we do have a huge list of unidentified flying objects documented, when in honesty it has just been the USAF hiding their opperations by creating these myths, and not only that but other spy planes as well. I can't really find a connection to any of our short stories but i see it linked to the conceptual idea of Xenophobia.

  6. After reading Denver Ordinance 300, I had some large connections to the X-Files, both the episode we watched in class and the series in general. Denver Ordinance 300 was on the voting ballot urging the state of Colorado to release all files regarding UFOs and extraterrestrial activity. This reminds me very much of the X-Files slogan, “The Truth is Out There.” It also reminded me of Moulder’s constant search for UFOs, aliens, and the paranormal. I could see him put something like this on the ballot. I was confused as to why this was a ballot initiative in Colorado, where nothing out of the ordinary usually happens. I could understand this in New Mexico, where Area 51 is, but not Colorado.

  7. In the Denver Ordinance 300, it said, "...who have not indicated any interest in disclosing UFO 'X-files' that have been kept secret for over 60 years. This puts the U.S. lagging far behind other countries that have released similar files." To me, this quote connects with our show we watched because the man kept the Mutato a secret as well. Just like in the movie, maybe the government doesn't want to show the files because they could be taken wrongly or miss used.

  8. After reading Denver Ordinance 300,I was able to connect this to the Frankenstein Story. His creation and existence was kept a secret from the public for a very long time just as the secret of the aliens was kept. The U.S. government officials kept this a secret and refused to close the UFO files. If something like this ever did happen, who knows how people would react. The people shouldn't be kept waiting for information.

  9. There are a few simple connections from the Denver Ordinances paper to our Frankenstein Complex reading. Like with the monster, Frankenstein, his presence was kept secret for a while until he was sparked to take action just as the UFOs: "U.S. government officials who have not indicated any interest in disclosing UFO 'X-files' that have been kept secret for over 60 years". Both the creator and the government officials are not allowing for public viewing in case the public opinion is negative. We also see similarities in the public opinion that anything unknown shouldn't be allowed to have human rights. In Denver Ordinance the public overwhelmingly shot down the initiative re-launch and in The Great Mutato, the town went after the monster until they were told that the creature would not harm them.

  10. While reading Denver Ordinance 300 I thought of the Burro story in our Xenophobia unit. The people weren't really scared just nervous, because they didn't know what to think of the aliens that had come. The Ordinance is basically stating that the Coloradan Government would create and E.T commission. This would look through UFO sightings and deal with these affairs. Just like the military did in Puppet Show. They came to see what they wanted and to assess the threat. In think this relates to Xenophobia unit because if Coloradans really wanted this commission they would have to be scared of something happening.

  11. From just looking at this ordinance I can see that people in the city of Denver show extreme xenophobia, even enough to show that the people of Denver will take action to deal with extraterrestrial life even thought were not sure if any thing off of are planet exist.

  12. I think that this Ordinance is unnecessary. The people of Denver don't really need a commission for aliens. This reminded me of the paranoid people on Maple Street, because they are trying to change things because of their xenephobia.

  13. After I read the Denver Ordinance 300, I directly started to think of the short story The Puppet Show. The Denver Ordinance is all about providing knowledge to the public about alien contact and in the Puppet Show, interstellar life comes to earth to visit them. A question started to arouse while reading the ordinance, how much is the government keeping from us. In a universe the size that our mind cannot even grasp, I believe that there is a 99.9% chance that there is other life out there and chances are they have visited us. If we decide to fill this void in our knowledge we can work towards great things like an interstellar peace treaty as seen in Puppet Show.

  14. The Denver Ordinance 300 reminded me of "Puppet Show" and all of the Xenophobia unit. If such an ordinance had existed, they would have been the ones that the "horror" would have requested to meet with instead of the military. I also think that if such an ordinance existed in the world of The Monsters are Due on Maple Street and the X-Files, the panic and chaos would never have occurred.

  15. After reading the Denver Ordinence, it reminded me of the Xenophobia unit as a whole because it was talking about ufos and how humans are afraid of foreign things and they cannot interact with them in the right manner

  16. After reading the Denver Ordinance I realized that people really are scared of aliens and what could possibly come from space. I never thought that people were this scared of space and what it could produce since we have only been able to find small water based organisms. The Ordinance really made me think about Monsters on Maple St. and if people are actually worried about an occurrence like the one shown through the clip.

  17. For some reason The Denver Ordinance reminds me of the movie Independence Day because it shows that even though everyone is skeptical about aliens, once the rumors or the myths become reality stop trying to deny the facts and learn how to survive. People want to know and they deserve to know. Who knows if the government is hiding classified information from us like in the movie Men In Black. Is there a right answer?

  18. After reading part of the Denver Ordinance, I immediately thought of the short story Puppet Show because it shows the technology making the human "greater" by depending on the technology. "We live in an era of smart phones, and 'not so smart' people"

  19. After reading Denver Ordinance, It made me think of the short story " the silk and the song" because if we dont set up a alien defense system now, our earth could fall under control of aliens.

  20. After reading Denver Ordinance, it made me think of the short story "Puppet Show" because it showed how much humans rely on technology, or "un-human" things to get our information. Today's people are extremely dependent on technology.
