Alien Cards? Unknown? Different?

What is your definition of xenophobia, and how did the card activity make you think about your definition? What emotions can you assign or connect with the term and concept of xenophobia in Science Fiction?  Please use the quote from your card in your response.  This blog response is due during class on 2-16-11.

  1. Xenophobia is the fear of strange, weird and unknown things. Your card made you feel mad, bad, or scared of what it said. My card said laugh at every thing I said so when they did that, I couldn't figure out what they were doing. Some emotions to go along with xenophobia are anger, fear, sadness.

  2. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of foreigners or strangers or any being or their culture that's outside of your natural existence. The first example of xenophobia that comes to mind to most is aliens and our fear of them. I think we fear it most because they are unknown so we dont really know what is going on with them or how to react to something foreign like that. The Alien Cards activity made me think about my definition because it really put people outside of their comfort zones and made themselves seem foreign to everyone else and vice versa. My card was "Nod At Me" and it made me feel very awkward when that was all someone could do towards me. It did not raise a fear though.

  4. Xenophobia is fear or hatred of the foreign or unknown. The card activity did relate to the unknown, but I think the reactions were more along the lines of annoyance or frustration. My card said “nod at me” so it didn’t really bother me since nodding is a common action that takes place in a conversation. I found it challenging to interrupt those with the interrupt card because I usually want to hear what people have to say. I think people are usually curious about the unknown, like people wanted to know what was on their card.

  5. My definition of xenaphobia is the fear of the unknown. The card I had was "Dont look at my face." The card activity made me think about my definition of xenaphobia because I had to think of what my card said by looking at the facial expressions on the people I was talking with. Some emotions that I can connect with the definition is awkward, or uncomfortable.

  6. Xenophobia is the fear of foreiners or strangers, but I think that it is also a fear of what we do not know or understand. For instance, someone who fears for the future is a xenophoib. I believe that science fiction writers use the idea of xenophobia to interest the readers. The idea of the unknown is frightening but also very intruiging. Last class when we did the card activity I thought it was funny how quickly people became uncomfortable when they did not understand why people were acting the way they were. It showed how quickly people become xenophobic. My card was to laugh everytime I said something to them. It was very easy to notice but it became more frustrating then scary.

  7. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of the unknown. The card activity made me think about my definition because while doing the activity I didn't know what my card said. I later found out my card said, "Ask my opinion." It didn't cause me fear but I was extremely curious about it said. I can connect fear and being nervous with xenophobia.

  8. Xenophobia, in my own words means the fear of the unknown. The card activities make me think about that because the feeling of panic and frustration when the word on your head is unknown. My quote was "dont look at my face" so not only was a afraid of what was on the card, but of what might be on my face, because knowbody would look at me.

  9. My definition of xenophobia is the fear of the unknown or foreign, the card activity made me think that we all have different ideas about people even before we meet them for example i had the "ask my opinion" and i had to give my opinion or agree or disagree with others. In science fiction the main characters are afraid of the foreign aliens and it always leads to them hating them or becoming their friends because they finally understood their main purpose.

  10. My definition of xenophobia is that what we don't know frighten us. I had a card about my feeling and many people are afraid of there emotions because sometimes they don't know what do expect from the emotions. In the movie forbidden planet they are afraid of the new planet and Robbie because they have never seen one

  11. Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown and "the unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange" (dictionary.com). By playing with the cards, we expirenced that fear of the unknown and the wonder of what our card on our head said. My card said "ignore me," but there were other cards that said "dance whenever I talk," "nod at me whenever I talk," and "laugh at everything I say." These cards demonstrated that there are things that even we as humans can't understand and know about.

  12. Xenophobia is the fear of strangers. My card was "agree with everything I say", this helps define Xenophobia because when you're with a stranger you usually want to appear good, you want them to like you so you would agree with anything they say to be liked or avoid contention.
Through science fiction Xenophobia plays a big part because there could be Aliens or different species that meet humans. It shows our fear of the unknown and the extremes one would have or take against someone they don't know and don't understand. Ray Bradbury takes this idea a lot in his stories because it is a fear we all have whether its big or small.

  13. I think that xenophobia is something that you are afraid of or something that is new and foreign to you. I was absent on monday for the card activity but from what it sounds like the activty showed that you can connect almost any emotion to xenophobia. I think that things like laughter and confusion and even frustration can be connected to Science Fiction but really it is anything that you feel or see around you.

  14. xenophobia is a fear of the unknown which is a human surviavla insticnt. Our card activity showed this by makeing us behave very differently from anyone else.

  15. Xenophobia is the fear of all things strange or unknown. After the cards you had to read peoples faces and, you had no clue what they were doing so it was unknown and could cause feelings of anxiety and fear.

  16. Xenophobia: societys fear of the unknowk, and the effeects of the unkown on society. I think that it is a good thing to fear the unkown, be prepared, and better safe than soory. If you are overconfident about something, you could end up eating your words later. It is good to be cautous, you don't know the consequenses of what could happen. Many could end up dying, if you screw something really important up. We are supposed to fear things that we don't understand, until we understand them. Ex. the little dinosaurs in jurassic park look innocent, but when there are many they are deadly. D Brevig

  17. My definition of xenophobia is when someone is exposed to a new culture and then becomes afraid of the unknown. Like in the forbidden planet where when they experience something new the fear the worst. My card was take everything I say as a personal insult. this made all of my conversations extemely akward and rude. this could happen if you meet someone and didnt like them off of there looks or culture.

  18. Xenophobia to me means to have a fear of people or things that we do not know or understand. For the people in the Alien Cards activity we did who had ignore could be the people who represent xenophobia. The quote on my card stated "respond yes to what they say and then summarize what they said. The card made no sense when i was talking to people and I didn't understand why they were saying yes and repeating what I was saying. Not knowing what my card was and people acting strange was very scaring because I was nervous to what my card had said.

  19. Xenophobia is the fear of something different or unknown. I feel like the cards showed how you can act differently toward what you already don't know. When somebody doesn't understand something then they usually think it's bad. Just like a lot of older movies and books about aliens made them evil, because nobody thought that maybe they wouldn't be evil. My card said "Cross your arms and squint when I talk." These cards show how we treat everybody differently.

  20. Xenophobia is the fear of unknown people to your society. When someone is scared of or concerned about a foreigner is an example. I don't really see how the card activity related to this however. My card said "laugh when I talk". This was a change to the social norm but not a fear of the unknown.

  21. Xenophobia means an unreasonable fear of the unknown. This might manifest itself as the fear of outsiders, new ideas, or even the fear of anything different. The cards represent what a different society might feel to be polite, or expected. We would simply feel angry if everyone had "Don't look at my face," taped on their forehead, as that is currently considered rude. But think of the Caste System, in which communication between classes is all but nonexistent.

  22. xenophobia –noun: an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.

Most stories in the science fiction genera, show a fear of the writer, or a warning of a possible future. Advertising robots, the confiscation of people's limbs for others benefit, or having man serving time. All stories are designed for some purpose, weather it be for entertainment or teaching a lesson. Most Sci-fi stories are more for teaching a lesson, than for entertainment or a laugh. Like Aesop's fables, they taught the reader a moral by the end of the story.

  23. My card had "Interupt Me", at the beggining of game I did not know what the card said. Quickly after trying to say two or three sentences I knew what it said and just stoped talking. I feel like I have a xenophobia when every body else in a room knows what is happening and I don't. Xenophobia often has the emotion of fear accociated with it also strange or the feeling of being out side of our comfert zone. I think that extrapolation feeds into xenophobia because it makes readers fear what might be in the future.

  24. xenophobia –noun: an unreasonable fear or hatred of foreigners or strangers or of that which is foreign or strange.

this relates to the card activity because the card activity told us how to react to something and in a sense that is what xenophobia, someone else is creating a view or observation for us and because we dont know what it is we become a little scared of it becuase we know nothing about it

  25. Xenophobia can be viewed as the fear of a strange race or species because their culture and politics vary from yours. It could potentially be boiled down to the fear of the unknown in people. If we cannot understand someone due to lack of knowledge we are going to fear their choices and beliefs. We can also be seen to be afraid the difference within ourselves, the fear we don’t blend in. An example of this can be seen in our class when we had to wear cards on our head. The feeling was worry and fear that we were in some way different and alienated because of it. People on the whole tend to like to blend in, not stick out to an extreme like we were in the cards (my personal card said "Take everything I say as a personal insult"). Another example can be seen in Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card where the human race killed an entire race because of their fear and the threat they posed to be BETTER than us. Miscommunication and isolation are huge factors in Xenophobia. Another huge example can be seen in North Korea, a country completely isolated from the rest of the world.

  26. xenophobia- to me means fear of unknown or new concepts.
I didn't really think that the cards were a good activity to show xenophobia, I think if we all had the same thing like we all speak with a British accent it would be a better example because we would all be in a "new" scenario.

  27. Although I was absent for the card activity, my definition of xenophobia is a fear of a fear of foreigners or strangers. This would be used in science fiction to describe many scenarios like aliens, new technology, etc.

  28. Xenophobia is the fear of foreigners or the unknown. My card said laugh at everything i say. I didn't like the feeling because i didn't know what people were doing. it was an uneasy feeling of not knowing what was going on. The unknown can make people sad, anxious, or angry.

Xenophobia is the fear of anything or anyone new or alien. I thought the card activity wasn't a great way to start the unit; I really odn't understand the connection. My card said "Ignore Me", so therefor I was ignored. It might have been more relevent to xenophobia if we had to acted scared of each other and the new expirience.

  30. Xenophobia is the fear of the unknown. It seems to be our nature to fear what we do not know. Xenophobia is why we are scared of the dark when were kids, why we fear getting old and why things like aliens seem to unease us. Xenophobia causes us fear and anxiety when we encounter the unknown. The only way to rid ourselves of those feelings is knowing, knowing everything and that is why we as a people have dedicated ourselves so much to the intellectual advancement of our species.
