Ordinances And E.T.?

After reading Denver Ordinance 300, did you think of any short story or class connections?  If you can incorporate quotations, reflect, challenge, or discern and keen insight, please do so in your blog post due today.

  1. I don't want the government talking to the aliens... We'd be doomed... the end.

  2. I think that since humans cant get along with other humans, we shouldnt even consider trying to get along with onother intelligent species. If we cant even work together with our own race then we dont have a chance dealing with another race.

  3. I think that this Ordinance can relate to Planet of the Apes. Our planet isn't really prepared for extra-terrestrials and we would probably not know what to do if one ever came. In Planet of the Apes they were not prepared for the human to come who could talk and was intelligent. In that movie it shows their lack of preparation for the unknown probably like ours would be.

  4. I'm getting bored of people here. It'd be nice to meet something from another planet so I would vote on this. Even though it's a total joke and no one would take it seriously.

  5. When I read about the ballot I instantly thought about the short story "The Puppet Show." I thought of this story because I think that it has the strongest connection to what is now becoming a reality to our country. The story shows extra-terrestrial life coming into contact with our world and that is what this ballot is displaying. I think that if the people of Colorado vote no than it will be an example of our xenophobia and how strong it really is.

  6. I think this petition is a good thing and that the government should be informing the people of any dicoveries or theories they have come accrossed. If they dont, then couldnt we possibly be like the apes in "Planet of the Apes" where the apes made it forbidden to go accross the desert when in reality they are just hiding and ancient civilization. What if that is what is occuring now? We have a right to know about what our government knows.

  7. I think this is an odd ordinance to be passing at the city level. I would think that a political function concerned with studying extra-terrestrials would be a bigger, state-wide or nation-wide ordinance. I want to compare it to "Puppet Show": In "Puppet Show" the people are forced into the encounter, regardless of politics. I think if we encounter extra-terrestrials then, at least at first, we won't be doing anything concerning politics. I think it's just odd to think that an ordinance concerning extra-terrestrials will really effect a group of people.

  8. It seems odd that we would even be thinking about this. Does this mean that we have actually discovered aliens? If we haven't, then why is this even being discussed? The way it's worded suggests that we have discovered something. I, personally, would like to be informed of it.

  9. Initially, my first connection between the stories we've read and the ballot 300 was tyhe story "puppet show," this struck me as similar because of the tone of the ballot by which i mean it wasn't necessarily denying the existence of extraterrestrials but rather accepting them and then making a fund to take care of the matter. After reading the entire ballot, I'm left with a feeling of confusion on the validity of these so called cover ups and, if there is truth behind the matter, what else is being covered up; because, to me, the existence of life beyond Earth would be an extremely important matter/fact. On the other hand, if the cover ups are untrue and there really is no evidence of life beyond Earth then we should see the evidence that there isn't "aliens" and that the matter should finally be put to rest so that we don't waste money in areas that are irrelevant.

  10. I feel as if this is very similar to the story "the silk and the song." It relates because in the story it seems like the Hussirs would know about the humans being from another planet but some are oblivious or unbenounced to this, including the humans. In the ordinance we are voting of whether or not we want to be prepared for extra terestrials and have knowledge of them rather than making it a big cover up.

  11. I think this is just another way to cover up the truth about alien life, its another way to trick us into thinking that the governement is telling us the truth, but behind closed doors who knows what there really doing...

  12. This Ordinance reminds me of the story "Puppet Show," because both deal with aliens and extraterrestrial life. Both deal with the fact that we have never really seen someone or something from a different planet and we are really sure how to handle if they did come to Earth. The Ordinance is trying to help us for the future and so we will be ready if Extraterrestrials visit Denver. "Puppet Show" is more about us handling these aliens when they have already arrived. So they are about the same concept and the visiting of aliens but different scenarios.

  13. When I read about this article I thought of Puppet Show, and how if we had this ordinance, the idea behind Puppet Show could happen. It would open up a communication with aliens, that is if they do exist and we could behold the sciences of these other worldly beings.

  14. I think this can relate slightly to xenophobia...being that the people who support and promote this commission believe that the government is too xenophobic to let information about aliens seep into the public. When I think about it, I suppose it technically is considered being xenophobic; however, I don't think that the American people should be giving some of their tax dollars away for the research and prevention? of extraterrestrial life, and instead, should focus on more pressing issues happening right now in the US. I understand the xenophobic part of the issue and that we should work toward a society that is not xenophobic; however, I think it is a waste of Federal money.

  15. The Denver Ordinance 300 shows the ever-growing feeling of xenophobia in the people of America. People are beginning to believe that aliens are more than a fun idea in a story or movie, but are actually turning into reality. Critics are probably thinking that taxpayer money and other funds could be going to a more "worthwhile" cause, since it is not even proven that aliens exist. This ordinance will cause radical opinions to form across Denver, and the results will be interesting. It is intriguing to see what different parts of Colorado are focusing their new ideas for bills and ordinances on.

  16. I think that random sample is a perfect example of why to vote yes on this ordinance, but then again who would we choose? I wouldn't appoint one person to represent earth as a whole. Maybe we just shouldn't dwell on negative thoughts such as alien invasion.

  17. If the government were to encounter an alien race member face to face, it's impossible to know exactly what would happen. However, I was reminded of Puppet Show, where an alien from another planet is interviewed by humans and invites to be friends with their race, as that may be how a conversation could be like between an alien race and the government as long as they came in peace.

  18. The Denver Ordinance 300 made me think of the short story Silk and the Song. I don't necessarily believe in aliens, but I can imagine how awkward it would be to be enslaved by angry little pixies.

  19. I thnk that the 20,000 people who voted for the Denver Ordinance 300 are stupid. I don't know why anyone would think that we need protection from aliens.

  20. The Denver Ordinance 300 seems to be very well thought out and beleived in by quite a few individuals. It might be nice to have an alien greeting commitee, after if they would of had one in Puppet Show or Random Sample the world might have endured a different fate. But the city of Denver doesn't need to spend tax payers money on an idea that is pretty much crazy with no lagitament background information to support it.

  21. I think that the bill would cause a lot of commotion between people. There are some people that think it would be crazy but on the other hand some would think that it would be a good idea. I would say that it would be a waste of money but the people that would like it can pay for it themselves

  22. This ordinance definitley connects with Science Fiction. Because in multiple stories and in Planet of The Apes, humans weren't prepared for extraterrestrial life. For instane, if a occurance comprable to Puppet Show would happen today we would have no idea what to do. Who would talk to them, who would make the decisions?

  23. I believe that the government should have a plan for encounters with aliens but i do not think the public should know of these encounters until after any chance of war with them has vanished. If people know about the aliens there would be panic.

  24. This was very interesting that they would have people vote on this. This reminds me of the short story Puppet Show and how aliens come to earth to negotiate but the humans, who are unaware of these aliens when they arrive. And the purpose of this Denver ordinance 300 was to raise awareness, so that’s what it reminded me of.

  25. This made me think of the story Puppet Show. The government got involved as soon as contact occurred. But life without contact with aliens is just life and there shouldn’t be any contact that we attempt. We have our own issues to deal with. We should not take on others.
