What Are You Reading? Augmented Reality?

Based upon Googlereader and the Augmented Reality article, is science intersecting with anything you have been reading or studying in Science Fiction class?  Could connections exist?  Please reflect upon your thinking and findings.  This blog repsonse should be completed in class today.

  1. As of right now I have not read anthing that I have found to be very intersecting to me. The Augmented Reality was kind of fun to read. I find it kind of creapy that you can point it at people and figure things out about them. I would not like anyone doing that to meto find stuff out about me. I don't know why that would be needed on that phone either.

  2. Yes, most certainly there have been interactions between what we have been reading and this Augmented Reality article. One connection is that both of the texts seem way out there yet seem attainable as well. Both have aspects that need improvement, but both also have very good ideas.

  3. Science is constantly intersecting with science fiction themes and ideas. The children who grew up with science fiction are often times the scientists who are bringing these fictional devices or machines into reality. Science Fiction, in other words, by enamouring the minds of the young, ensures it's arrival into reality, if only in bits and pieces.

  4. I don't know if I can draw specific connections between the stories that we have read in class to this, but I can say that over the past few months that Augmented Reality, or combining the real world with the digital world, is increasing in popularity. My brother and I discovered another example of this technology- there are websites that combine footage from your webcam with three-dimensional images. Sometimes they have a piece of paper with a pattern on it that the webcam will recognize and superimpose the image onto that. I definately think that we will see a lot more of this in our society over the next few years.

  6. In a way, we've been reading about things that are similar to things that exist now, and things that could exist in the near future. A good example is Sales Pitch because advertisement is all around us, and I don't think there will be inter planetary travel for work and sales robots everywhere, but there is a possibility that a fasrad could exist. Flying jet cars could be a possibility, I'm sure there is someone, somewhere trying to figure out the mechanics. There is some what of a connection with cars because they have come a long way in the past 80 years, there are electric cars, hybrid cars, cars with three wheels, there is an enormous variety of cars coming in all different shapes, sizes and colors. Henry Ford's car just came in one model, and one color, black. Humans have come a long way, and we have even farther to go.

  7. The science that I have read off of Google Reader and in the augmented Reality article/video seem to be getting close to some aspects of what we have been doing in science fiction class. In Sales Pitch, advertisements were able to go straight to the intended target, and the augmented reality concept seems to be a similar concept, because it bring information straight to the viewer in a private manner. Some of the other things in Google Reader seem to show us getting closer to making robots more common, not to mention more widespread commercial spaceflight, which was set up as a concept in both Ralph 124C 41+ and Sales Pitch. While the actual technologies don't yet rival those extrapolations, it is rather plain that progress is being made towards the eventual goal of technologies equalling those in these stories.

  8. well as of lately i have been reading up on things like the ipad. which just about everyone has already heard of, but basically it is a huge iphone. but whats kind of intersects with this is well, the internet. but even more then that its companys like google that use recources like data mining and are responsible for google maps. you can even take pictures on the iphone and it will also save your gps location at where the picture was taken. google is all about things coming together and synching up. which is obvious because its a search engine and it brings information to you. and i has things like google reader. so augmented reality is the same thing. keeping things together, and bringing informatin to you. but this augmented reality is the next step because we went from a screen, to a touch screen that you can actually see and touch information, to one that can look at real life and gather information. its the next step. no more search bars, just real life.

  9. I believe that Augmented reality is definitely intersecting with things that I have been learning in Science fiction. For instance: In the article on the comic of the late 1800's to the early 1900's of the inventor, that was an augmented reality because this boy made things that later in history, came to fruition. Like the submarine and that plane were both examples of how in some cases, something can be fake one moment, and real the other moment.

  10. So far what we have read does not intersect with the phone app. I think that if we had read some more modern stories cell phone type inventions would be more prominent. I think that the stories are too old and that people would have thought cell phones or inventions like cell phones were un needed since they had a house phone already.

  11. I think that the Augmented Reality is an interesting invention, I hadn't heard of it yet. I find it incredible how now we can have instant information and be connected to anything and anyone instintaniously. I was also reading a news article about NASA and how they are exploring new ideas of human space flight, and the possiblility of having commercial companies fly people to and from the International Space Station. This brings the possibility of humans living in space one step closer

  12. Through Googlereader and the article, I was impressed and the believability of the idea of an augmented reality. In one of the articles I read through my Googlereader, it was showing how bacteria can power microgears that may be able to be used for small medical machines. I find this hard to believe, but it is possible, just like how an augmented reality is possible.

  13. Yes science had been intersecting with what we have been reading in Science Fiction class. New technology has been introduced in the readings, and new planets or worlds, it is also introduced in modern day society. Its becoming more technically advanced with new gadgets. In the readings, they were written in the mid 1900's and they're predicting what life might be like in the future, and its similar to our world today.

  14. So far no I have not found anything to be intersecting with any of the stories we have read so and the Augmented Reality and the Google Reader article. Yes connections could exist later on with these. With the Augmented Reality it would be cool too put your camera over things and have information to show up on that since it is ever changing. The thing that would probably be a constant battle with the Augmented Reality would be personal privacy because if you put the camera on on the person information on them would show up and that would be "Stalkerish."

  15. I think science is gradually catching up with our science fiction stories and technological ideas. I read an article about NASA and their idea of making their discoveries more public and hands-on. They thought about maybe having students remote robots that they send into outer space so that the students can learn about things as they're happening. The video was pretty interesting, considering one would be able to get extra information about practically anything one's phone is pointed at. I think our technology is already far ahead of what we've been reading about in Ralph and Sales Pitch, but there are also some things in those stories that we've never explored. For example, as of yet there are no giant salesman robots out there trying to sell themselves to people. One thing I find disturbing about our technology now is that things can go very wrong very quickly. I'm not saying that technology is bad or evil, but it has presented some questionable issues in the past. Facebook and Myspace are very resourceful, but they are also about the least private that conversations and photos can get. Once a picture or comment is put up, it's not coming down, and quite frankly that is scary. I'm also not thrilled with the idea of having a phone that tells me about what's right in front of my nose. First of all, I'd like to find out for myself instead of having a machine tell me. Secondly, I think it'd be creepy to know what people's names are, what they're holding in their hands and how many email accounts they have before I've even met them. I just think a lot of inventions so far have many downturns.

  16. In one sense, the idea that people no longer have privacy is being expressed in both the articles and in the story "Sales Pitch." In the story the robot salesmen invades people's space when they drive, when they're outside their house, and eventually, into people's homes. It's almost as if they can never escape the chill of technology and capitalism. The introduction new technologies today do try and limit people's privacy and rights, but as direct as the salesmen in "Sales Pitch." For instance, in the "Augmented Reality" story, I think it's interesting how the phone could end up telling you where houses are for sale and that eventually it may have the possibility to tell you who people are. It's a dehumanizing act because it restricts human interacting and forces people to share information that doesn't necessarily have to be shared. We lose the interaction of having a conversation and rather take a second to push a button. Is this really the way that we want our civilization to go? Personally, I like my privacy and am afraid of the consequences.

  17. I have found a lot of things to be intersecting with the subjects we have been reading in Science Fiction. I have found a lot of interesting article that I have posted on Google Reader. But most of the articles that I have found didn't sound ridiculous. If I wanted to really learn something, and I really do. I wouldn't want to have fake or unreal articles so that I wouldn't have the wrong information.

  18. Today's advances in science have intersected that of fiction from the past in many ways. The video phones of sci-fi stories have been embodied in the webcams of today, for example. In other ways, modern science has surpassed the fictitious expectations of the 1950's by creating things like computers that control massive amounts of data and actions all by listening to a mathematical algorithm. However, modern science has not done it all. We still live on earth, we don't have flying cars, and we don't have infinite life.

  19. The idea of being able to know background about a particular place or object simply by looking at it has been spoken of for quite a while. We can inquire and learn about the place or object, similar to the Augmented Reality, but will we ever be able to cut out that step all together as opposed to making it simpler like the article. We have made the connections between existing inventions and innovating them, but we still don't, and I don't think we ever will, be able to alter human functions. The idea of extrapolation, taking existing ideas and building on them, is very often a topic of discussion. I would love to be able to expand human abilities, but we can only expand our capabilities.

  20. The science discussed in the augmented reality article sounds very futuristic to me. It is hard to believe that we now have the technology capable of doing something like this. Another thing I read was about something the military uses for soldiers. They are devices that attach to the legs and allow you to carry more weight with less force. This reminds me of robot technology in "Sales Pitch".

  21. based on the the two sources,i dont believe science is intersecting with anything we have read the augmented article was interesting and fun to read but some of the stuff it does is kind of weird , why would i need to learn stuff about a randomm person on the street .

  22. Some technology that was the stuff of science fiction only a few decades ago is now a reality. However,a lot of it is expensive, flawed, and not practical. The technology has been invented, it will just be a long time before it will be practical.

  23. It seems like the technology in science fiction stories are becoming a reality. The new augmented reality is an example of this. All of the new technology is quite amazing to me. It seems a little scary that someone's phone can scan you and receive information about you, whether you like it or not. This idea connects to the story, "Sale's Pitch." Because in that story, there is no privacy. The technology has evolved in the future so that everyone has no choice but to listen to all of the advertisements. And with this new augmented reality, no one will keep their privacy. Everyone's information will be at someone else's disposal. And hopefully in the future technology will not get too out of hand.

  24. i have not found any point that have came a cross that did not stand out to be in the stories that we have been reading or what we have studied but there are some interesting articles that have been around such as the release IPad and that article that phone that all you got to do to get info on the person you are looking at is point it at them and then you got your info i find that to be very creepy.
